Chapter 42
Chapter 42
Megan wasted no time as she staggered to her feet. Her breath was still shaky and ragged.
She turned on the ink tap and allowed some of the cold water to touch her face.
Her hands pressed hard against the porcelain material so tight that he could feel the blood flow in her veins slow down.
Her reflection was awful.
She was back to regular Megan but her eyes were red and hollow. Her face was messy with a lot of frizziness and her hair was scattered.
In short, she looked awful.
Her lower lip trembled as she moved closer to the mirror. She held her breath, expecting her reflection to change again but after waiting for some time, she was still staring at her pathetic self.
If Megan wanted to be very honest with herself, somewhere drop down, she hoped that her reflection would change again.
Deep down, she was not happy that she was looking at herself again.
She looked normal but she felt completely different.
Her stomach churned as it threatened to bring out all of its contents. She tried to make sense of what just happened but the more she tried, the more she felt like she was about to lose her mind.
Was she just hallucinating? Would it be so severe that she would hallucinate that she had somehow become her boss?
These were the thoughts that ran through her mind but somewhere deep down, Megan believed that this was something more.
It all felt strange yet at the same time, it felt very familiar. Almost as if she was experiencing a case of deja vu.
No matter how hard she tried, Megan could not erase the feeling that she had seen all of this before. The feeling that she knew the little girl and exactly what she was talking about.
With a shaky breath, Megan splashed more water on her face as she tried to calm herself.
It was all in her mind.
She tried to convince herself but as her eyes met the floor, the floor still had water pooled across the tiles from the little girl’s drenched form.
Her breath hitched as she felt a knot form in her throat.
Her eyes immediately looked back up as her heart threatened to escape from the confines of her chest.
Closing her eyes, her nostrils flared as she took in long deep breaths in a desperate attempt to calm her raging heart.
After some time, her eyes found the floor again and this time, her eyes made out the small yet distinct small water stained footprints that led back to the stall from where the little girl had emerged from.
Her mouth went dry because Megan knew that no matter how hard she tried to ignore it, she knew that she did not imagine what had just happened.
She put on the water faucet again listening to the sound of the running water.
She may try to deny it but she very well was still afraid of stepping out of the restroom.
She hated to imagine the pity that would be on the faces of Linda and Cleo as they stared down at her.
She hated every moment of it.
“I wish they could just die.”
She muttered low under her breath, a strange glint of determination flashing through her eyes.
YOU LET ME IN
Megan’s eye lids fluttered open and close numerous times to be sure that this time, she was not seeing things.
In the mirror, in bright red were the words glaring right back at her.
One thing that she knew for sure was that it was not her who wrote that.
She immediately turns around to stare at the bathroom stall again just to see that there was nothing there.
She stumbled back, her eyes becoming blurry as tears gathered at the corners of her eyes.
Her back hit a wall, the icy feel of the tile flowing through her body.
“This isn’t real Megan. It isn’t real”
She shakily muttered to herself as the words seemed to grow even bigger and bigger.
Her reflection smiled right back at her.
It was her yet it was someone that she could not recognize at the same time.
Her reflection smiled unnaturally, the lips widening far more than she was able to.
“Didn’t you want this Megan?”
Her reflection echoed from the mirror, her head tilting to the side as if to signify that it was honestly confused.
Megan was frozen in place from shock and fear and her lips could not jive to utter a word.
“You asked for this Megan.”
She said again in an eerie tone causing a shiver to run down her spine almost immediately.
First it was the little girl and now this? Megan had decided that whatever embarrassment that she had to face on the outside had to be better than this.
Without wasting any more time, her body rushed for the restroom door and she ran out.
Her steps quickened as she made her way to the entrance very well knowing that she would have to pass the main hall.
As she got closer, the sounds of proper talking and the clicking of glasses enveloped her and just for a brief second, Megan could not help the sense of relive that waned over her.
It felt good to finally be around people but just as soon as the feeling washed over, it vanished.
The first thing that’s he felt were the stares piercing through her.
Her eyes found the floor suddenly finding the red carpet very interesting.
She dared not look up as she slowly made her way towards the exit.
The entire hall became silent but the silence was so loud as the ringing in her ears intensified.
She did not need to look up to know that they were all watching her.
Megan raised her head for a minute and her eye caught Cleo Ainsley in the center of the room.
Her form was confident and her aura strong. She was dressed in a well tailored skirt suit and everything about her was done to perfection.
The reaction came almost immediately as a wave of jealousy coursed through her body.
