Chapter 35 Echoes of reaper
The Aegean wind carried the scent of salt and wild thyme as Kai stood on the terrace the next morning, the ashes of the satellite phone long scattered.
Lena found him there, two mugs of coffee in her hands. She handed him one and studied his face, the tight jaw, the distant look in his eyes that she had hoped was gone forever.
“You didn’t sleep,” she said softly.
Kai took the mug but didn’t drink. “Phantom sent one last message before I burned the phone.”
He told her everything. The new Ghostmaker. Darian Kane, Reaper’s biological son. The master override. The warning that Eclipse was being rebuilt faster and more ruthlessly than before. When he finished, Lena set her mug down on the stone railing and turned to face the sea.
For a long moment, she said nothing.
Then, quietly: “We were so close.”
“I know.”
She turned back to him, eyes shining with unshed tears but her voice steady. “One last time?”
Kai met her gaze. “One last time. We verify the threat. If it’s real and he’s about to activate the full protocol, we stop him. Then we disappear, truly disappear. New continent. New names. No more phones. No more ghosts.”
Lena searched his face for a long time. Finally, she nodded.
“Together,” she said. “Always together. But after this… it ends. No matter what. Promise me.”
“I promise.”
They left the cottage three days later.
New identities. New route. A quiet ferry crossing and then a series of trains that eventually brought them to a small town outside Vienna, the same city where Kai had once publicly rejected the Ghostmaker title.
Phantom had left one final dead-drop in an old cache: coordinates for a safe observation point and a single encrypted file containing everything he had on Darian Kane.
They retrieved it at dusk in an abandoned rail yard.
The file was worse than Kai expected.
Darian Kane was thirty-eight, raised in complete secrecy by Reaper. He had his father’s intellect and none of his restraint.
He had already secured the loyalty of several remaining Circle factions and was preparing a formal succession ceremony in nine days at a heavily fortified private estate in the Vienna Woods.
Once he completed the biometric ritual and publicly claimed the title, the Ghostmaker protocol would fully activate, giving him master control over the surviving Eclipse infrastructure.
Worse... he had begun targeting anyone connected to Kai’s past, including known associates of Lena.
Lena closed the laptop in their rented safe house, a small apartment on the edge of the city.
“Nine days,” she said. “We can reach the estate. We can disrupt the ceremony before he locks in the title.”
Kai stood by the window, staring into the night. “If we fail…”
“We won’t,” Lena cut in. She walked over and wrapped her arms around him from behind. “We’re smarter now. We have each other. And this time, we’re not fighting for revenge. We’re fighting for the life we almost had on that island.”
Kai turned and pulled her close, kissing her deeply. The kiss held everything.. love, fear, determination, and the heavy knowledge that this really would be the final time.
That night, they made love with quiet intensity, as if trying to memorize every second. Afterward, Lena lay with her head on his chest.
“After this,” she whispered, “we never speak his name again. Reaper. Harbinger. Kane. None of them. We live.”
Kai stroked her hair. “We live.”

The next eight days were a blur of preparation.
They scouted the estate from multiple angles. Lena built a custom malware package and forged credentials. Kai drilled movement patterns and escape routes until his body remembered them in his sleep.
On the night of the ceremony, they moved.
The private estate in the Vienna Woods was lit like a fortress. Luxury cars lined the long driveway. Security was heavy, biometric gates, roving patrols, and elite operators.
Kai went in as catering staff.
Lena waited in a van two kilometers away, fingers flying across her keyboard.
“I’m in the service wing,” Kai whispered into the earpiece as he moved through the bustling kitchen. “Heading toward the main hall.”
“Darian is in the ceremonial chamber on the second floor,” Lena replied. “The succession ritual starts in twenty minutes. You need to reach the biometric altar before he completes the scan.”
Kai slipped past two guards and ascended the service stairs.
He reached the second-floor corridor just as the ceremony began.
Through a cracked door, he saw him.
Darian stood before an ornate altar glowing with holographic displays. Tall, cold-eyed, with Reaper’s sharp features but a crueler mouth. He was about to place his hand on the scanner.
Kai raised his suppressed pistol.
But before he could fire, Darian turned as if he had been expecting him.
“Hello, brother,” he said with a chilling smile. “Father always said you would come.”
Security flooded the room.
