Chapter 42 A NEW HEARTBEAT
Three weeks had passed since the battle at the Blind Well.
The east wing of the palace was still covered in scaffolding. The sound of hammers, the buzz of saws, and the shouts of workers had become the palace's new music. In the old days, this noise would have driven Dorian insane. But now? Now, he stood by the window, coffee in hand, listening to that noise like a symphony. Because it was the sound of healing, not destruction.
Serra approached him from behind. Her footsteps were silent, but Dorian knew she was coming. He always knew.
"Watching the construction again?" Serra asked, wrapping her arms around his waist.
Dorian leaned back, resting his weight against her. "Just watching the walls go up. I used to think those walls imprisoned us. Now... I feel like they're protecting us."
He turned and cupped Serra’s face. But there was a strange intensity in his gaze. His brows were furrowed slightly, as if he were looking at a puzzle he couldn't solve.
"What is it?" Serra asked.
"Your scent," Dorian said, burying his nose in the crook of her neck. He took a deep breath. "It’s changed. Lately... you smell different. Heavier. More... electric."
Serra laughed. "Maybe I just need a shower, Alpha."
"No," Dorian said seriously. He placed his hand over her stomach. It wasn't a conscious move; it was pure instinct. "My seal... every time I get close to you, it vibrates. It doesn't hurt. It just... hums. Like it's greeting something."
(THE SHIFT IN POWER)
That afternoon, Serra was at the training grounds. Kael, though healed, wasn't back to full strength yet, so he was "coaching" Serra (which mostly meant shouting insults from the sidelines).
"You're dropping your left!" Kael shouted, biting into an apple. "If Vespera crawled out of her grave, she'd catch you on that side."
Serra threw a kick at the sparring dummy. But something felt wrong.
Usually, her Red Alpha power flowed through her veins like cold, sharp steel. But today... today it felt hot. Molten.
When her kick connected, the wave of energy released from her leg was so massive that the heavy sandbag dummy didn't just tip over; it ripped off its chains, flew across the arena, and exploded against the far wall. Sand rained down everywhere.
Kael dropped his apple. "Holy shit," he said. "Okay, so you weren't dropping your left. You were just hiding a nuclear bomb."
Serra was panting. Her hands were shaking. This power spike wasn't normal. She felt dizzy. The world tilted on its axis for a second.
"Serra?" Kael's voice sounded far away.
She sank to her knees. She wasn't nauseous, but deep in her core, right in her womb, there was a strange, pulsing heat. Like a second sun was rising inside her.
(THE SURPRISE IN THE INFIRMARY)
When she opened her eyes, she was in the infirmary. White lights blinded her.
"She's awake," Valeria's voice said. She didn't sound worried; she sounded stunned.
Dorian was right there. He had taken Serra's hand between both of his. His face was pale as a ghost. "I thought something happened to you," he said, his voice trembling. "Kael caught you as you fainted. That power surge... My seal almost ripped out of my chest."
Serra tried to sit up. "I'm fine. Just... the power drained me."
"The power didn't drain you, Serra," Valeria said. She stood at the foot of the bed, holding a tablet. She looked at the screen, then at Serra, then back at the screen. There was a disbelief in her smile.
"What is going on?" Dorian asked impatiently. "Is it poison in her blood? Void residue?"
"No," Valeria said. She turned the tablet toward Dorian. On the screen were complex biometric waves. But in the center, there was a steady, rapid, powerful rhythmic dot.
"Not poison," Valeria whispered. "It's a heartbeat."
The room fell into silence. Dorian froze.
"What?" Serra said. Her hand went instinctively to her stomach.
"There are two heartbeats," Valeria explained, her eyes tearing up. "One is yours, Serra. The other... the energy signature is incredible. It carries both Red Alpha and Volcan blood. And Dorian..." Valeria looked at her brother. "I know why your seal was singing. That baby... that baby is answering your curse. It's not afraid of it."
(DORIAN'S REACTION: PURE JOY)
Dorian stared at the tablet. The invincible warrior, the cold strategist, was paralyzed by a screen.
"A baby?" he whispered. The word felt foreign in his mouth. "A... child?"
He slowly turned to Serra. His eyes were full. Those lava-red irises were now shining with tears.
"I..." Dorian’s voice cracked. His knees gave way, and he collapsed onto the edge of the bed, beside Serra. "I thought my line ended with me. I thought the curse would poison everything."
He touched Serra’s stomach. His hand was trembling. He was gentle, as if touching the most fragile glass in the world.
"Is it real?" he asked Serra, begging for confirmation.
Serra placed her hand over his. She could feel that heat, that second sun. "It's real," she said. Tears streamed down her cheeks. "Ours."
Dorian paused for a second. Then, overwhelmed by the emotion flooding him, he tilted his head back and laughed. The sound echoed off the palace walls. A pure, unadulterated, mad roar of joy.
Suddenly, he scooped Serra up from the bed. "Careful!" Valeria shouted, but Dorian didn't listen. He lifted Serra, spinning her in the air.
"We're having a child!" Dorian shouted, covering Serra's face with kisses. "Did you hear that? I don't care about the curse! I don't care about the Void! We created life, Serra! You and me!"
As Serra laughed in his arms, she knew she would never forget the look on Dorian’s face—the moment fear was completely erased.
Dorian set her down but didn't let go. He rested his forehead against hers.
"I promise you," he said, his voice shaking. "I won't do to him what my father did to me. I won't seal him. I won't hide him. He will be the freest, strongest thing this kingdom has ever seen."
Kael poked his head through the door, biting into a fresh apple with a grin. "Hey, I heard I'm gonna be an uncle. Just saying, I'm buying the kid their first knife."
Dorian laughed, wiping the tears from his eyes. "Get in line, Kael. First, his father is going to give him the world."
