Guilty Confession

Guilty Confession
The Conference Hall was alive with the clatter of cutlery and the low hum of conversation as the Alphas of the Pack Lands gathered for a hearty breakfast. The air was thick with the scent of sizzling meats and fresh bread, but even thicker was the tension. None of the Alphas dared to object to Malakai's plan to merge his pack with Amani’s—likely due to the silent challenge in his fierce gaze, daring anyone to oppose him.

Malakai had just begun to address the growing concerns about the Rogue Lands when the door flew open. Marquis, his father’s head guard, stormed in, his expression grave.

“Your Majesty, forgive the interruption, but we have a situation,” Marquis announced, his voice tight with urgency.

The King frowned, irritation flashing in his eyes. “Can this not wait? We’re in the middle of an important meeting.”

Marquis took a breath, his words heavy with the weight of bad news. “Your Majesty… Blackclaw has been invaded. The entire western border and surrounding cities are under siege.”

The King’s face darkened, his mind reeling with disbelief. “What did you just say?”

“Blackclaw is under attack, Your Majesty,” Marquis repeated, his voice steady but filled with the gravity of the situation.

The King shot up from his seat, rage simmering in his veins. “Who in the hell would dare invade my Kingdom?!”

“It’s her…” Marquis’s voice trembled with dismay. “…the She-Alpha.”

“Amani?!” Malakai shot back, his voice thick with shock.

“No…” The King’s eyes widened in denial. “That’s impossible!”

“Indeed.” Malakai nodded, the tension in his shoulders evident. “You better have your facts straight, Marquis. Amani would never do such a thing.”

“I assure you, Your Highness, my facts are indeed straight,” Marquis replied, his tone firm. “The She-Alpha and her army broke through the gates at our western border early this morning. They decimated most of our guards. The survivors retreated here to the palace, along with scores of civilians seeking asylum.”

“Her army?!” The King’s voice rose with incredulity. “Her forces couldn’t be more than a few hundred wolves! And you’re telling me this small army now controls the entire western region of Blackclaw?!”

“Not small, Your Majesty… thousands upon thousands march with her. It’s like the Rogue Wars all over again,” Marquis reported grimly.

The King’s gaze turned icy as it landed on Malakai. “You fool… your own mate has betrayed you!”

“No…” Malakai retorted, shaking his head in denial. “Something isn’t right… Amani wouldn’t summon an army unless she had a damn good reason.”

“Isn’t her reason obvious?” The Alpha of the Swiftwater pack interjected, his voice dripping with suspicion. “She wants revenge for what we did to her pack. She knew we’d be gathered here, didn’t she? Leaving our packs defenseless. This is the perfect chance for her to strike us down and then slaughter our packs one by one!”

A wave of panic swept through the room, the Alphas erupting in chaotic murmurs, their fears for their vulnerable territories and families palpable.

Malakai’s fist slammed down on the table, silencing the room. “Listen to me, all of you! You don’t know the first thing about my mate, so don’t you dare presume to speak for her! Amani is the kindest, most generous person I’ve ever known. She would never dream of harming anyone…”

The King scoffed, his eyes narrowing. “Her actions speak louder than your words, Malakai. If she wants a war, then a bloody war she shall have. Marquis! Prepare the guards and mobilize every capable pack member for battle…”

“No!” Malakai’s voice cut through the tension like a blade. “No one is preparing a damn thing until I speak to her first! There will be no war, not if I have anything to say about it!”

“Your Highness, you’re endangering innocent lives by stalling the inevitable,” Marquis urged, his voice edged with desperation.

“No,” Malakai countered, his voice low and resolute. “I’m saving all of your asses. That’s what I’m doing.”
———

Amani’s thoughts swirled, the realization crashing down on her like a tidal wave. “We’re going to have a pup!” Seraphine’s voice echoed with joy, but for Amani, the timing couldn’t have been worse. She pushed herself up from the cot, a storm brewing within her, and strode out of the medical tent. Maggie, Darius, and Archer hurried after her, their concern evident.

“What are we going to do now?” Darius asked, his voice laced with uncertainty.

Amani spun around, her eyes blazing with perseverance. “What we set out to do, Darius. This changes nothing… we are rushing the palace, and I’m killing the King.”

“Not in your condition, you’re not!” Maggie snapped, her voice firm. “I’m going to the palace right now to tell Kai everything.”

“Don’t bother, Maggie,” Amani shot back. “He will be informed of our arrival soon enough. That is, if he hasn’t been already.”

“We all know Malakai will side with us,” Archer said confidently, “especially once he learns what his father has done. But now that you’re carrying his child, I highly doubt he’ll stand behind a war at all.”

Amani’s jaw tightened, her eyes narrowing. “He is either with me, or he is against me.”

Maggie clasped Amani’s hands tightly, her voice trembling with worry. “Amani, please, set aside your anger and grief for just one moment. Think about the life growing inside you. Are you truly willing to risk your own child’s safety?”

Amani closed her eyes, a deep breath escaping her as she fought against the storm of emotions threatening to consume her. The news of her pregnancy struck like a hammer to her heart—she had believed herself infertile, had never even entertained the possibility of becoming a mother. It was a foreign concept, just like the idea of having a mate had once been. Yet, despite her reluctance, had turned out to be a beautiful thing.

“I’ll tell Malakai myself,” Amani finally said, her voice firm but tinged with the weight of her decision. “Not a word to him, or anyone else, from any of you. Is that understood?”

Maggie and her Betas nodded in solemn agreement.

“Alpha…” Steven’s voice broke the tense silence. “…the task force has arrived with the prisoner. He’s been taken to the holding tent.”

“Thank you, Steven.” Amani acknowledged, her tone softening slightly. “Your father will be generously rewarded for his loyalty in this matter.”

“He’s proud to serve such an admirable Alpha.” Steven replied with a respectful bow.

Amani gave him a firm pat on the back before marching toward the holding tent, her Betas trailing close behind. Inside, she found herself face-to-face with Terrence, the man who had been manipulated by King Zander into poisoning a vital food shipment meant for her pack.

The man was shackled to a post, his eyes glued to the floor, refusing to meet the burning gaze of the Alpha before him. Amani crouched down, her glare as sharp as a blade, waiting for the coward to raise his head and face the consequences of his treachery.

“Look at me,” Amani demanded, her voice icy and unyielding.

Terrence hesitated, then slowly lifted his gaze, his eyes filled with dread. “Please… don’t hurt my family…” His voice quivered with desperation.

Amani’s stare hardened. “You think I want to hurt your family?”

“The King warned me about this,” Terrence stammered. “He said you were coming for his crown and that you would slaughter everyone in Blackclaw just like they did to Bloodmoon.”

Amani’s eyes narrowed. “The King told you that?”

“Yes,” Terrence admitted, his voice trembling. “He said this was the only way to stop you and save my family. He said that you wouldn’t see it coming… I confess… I poisoned the food. Please… punish me and spare my family.”

Amani’s gaze shifted to Rush and Kaleb. “Where is his family?”

“His mate was advised to seek refuge in her native pack,” Kaleb informed. “Whether she did so is beyond me.”

Amani fixed her gaze on Terrence, her voice cold and cutting. "Let me educate you on the truth, Terrence. I don’t slaughter innocents… but you, you let yourself be fooled by your despicable King. Instead of consulting with his council, you trusted his lies, and in doing so, you poisoned an entire village."

Terrence's eyes brimmed with tears, his head shaking in disbelief.

"It’s true," Amani continued, her tone unrelenting. "You killed men, women… pregnant women."

"No..." Terrence's anguished sobs interrupted her.

"Children, babies," she added, her voice steady but laced with anger. "And you… you took the life of someone I loved deeply." Amani’s voice quivered, not with weakness, but with a barely contained brew of emotions. Her eyes bore into his, filled with the intensity of her pain and fury. "The King made you believe I was the monster. But I am not the one who has the blood of hundreds of innocents on my hands, Terrence. That’s on you."

Amani stood tall, her gaze fixed on the broken man before her. For a brief moment, pity stirred within her—Terrence was, after all, nothing more than a pawn in King Zander’s twisted game.

“What shall we do with him?” Rush broke the deafening silence.

Her eyes remained locked on Terrence, noting the genuine remorse in his tear-streaked face. “Keep him here in holding. He will tell the Prince everything he just told me once he arrives… and when this war is over, his fate will be decided.”

She turned on her heel, leaving the tent without another word, the weight of her decision pressing down like a heavy shroud.
