Chapter 47 Cue and the Cretin
Chapter 47 Cue and the Cretin
“You’ll be glad to know,” a dark voice came from behind them, and they turned to see Hunter leaning against the opposite wall. “That one doesn’t belong to you.”
“W-what? Trigger asked, tears and snot running down her face from how hard she was sobbing.
“I SAID!” He shouted, “THAT’S NOT YOUR EHEC!”
Triggle tumbled to her rear end, tears still coming, and looked up at the screaming EHEC in misery. “How could you do this?” she asked.
“First of all,” he pushed himself off the wall and walked up to the EHEC, squaring up nose to chest with the taller man, “I don’t do any of this. I,” he paused. “Just hunt them.”
Hunter lunged, and before Trigger or Cue could stop him, he grabbed the robot’s speaker box in his throat and ripped it out, taking several feet of oily-bloody wire with him.
“That was fucking annoying!” He laughed, throwing down the voicebox with a disgusted flick of his hand. “How do you think the Doctor tolerates it?”
Cue gasps, holding her stomach, and stumbling back into a wall. She watched the EHEC still scream, but now, he was gargling up blood and oil and aspirating on it. “This is so wrong!” she screamed.
She acted without thinking, pushing herself away from the wall. She walked behind the poor man and stabbed him directly in the back between the shoulder blades and on the spinal column with her scapel, killing the EHEC instantly. The EHEC gave one heavy lift and fall of his chest, like a sigh of relief, and his body sagged on his bindings.
“Victor is going to be none too happy about that. He was trying to discover what made them essentially immortal.” Hunter said with a great sigh.
“I don’t care what your doctor is working on,” Trigger growled from the floor, her left hand still on the EHEC’s leg. She looked up slowly, her eyes narrowed with fury. “I don't care about evolution,” she started to stand, “I don’t care about procreation,” she stood on her feet and reached for Cue, taking her hand and squeezing hard. “I care about my fucking people, and you are not one of them.” In her free hand, she flicked the scalpel, making it spin.
“Whoa, whoa, whoa, ladies, I think you’re confused.” he held his hand up, a nice gentlemanly smile on his face. “I’m here to help you.”
“I couldn’t want someone’s help less than I want yours,” Cue snarled.
“But you see, this EHEC didn’t belong to you, but I have someone I believe does. Someone you’ve been worried about for a while now.” His smile grew as theirs grew wide.
“We haven’t been looking for anyone but a doctor,” Trigger said suspiciously.
“Oh, no? Well, he’s been looking for you.” He turned on a heel, hands raised, and marched down the hall without another word.
“Do we follow him?” Cue asked, keeping as close as possible to Trigger.
“He knows the way out of here,” Trigger said, stepping forward and pulling Cue along.
They followed him in silence for two right turns and a left before they were able to hear a new kind of screaming. One that stopped them in their tracks.
“You heard that right, this is the Cretin wing.” Hunter chuckled, “Doctor Victor's new experiment. As we know, a bite or scratch from a Zombie or a Cretin will cause you to change within hours, but what about other fluids? What if, and hear me out, what if we used the semen or the womb of a Cretin to create life?”
“You’re all monsters. No wonder those other women are all dead. Every single one of you is a monster!” Cue spat.
“What? We care about Cretins now?” He snarked.
“We care about the people you’ll be experimenting with,” Trigger said, but she winced as she remembered the MAster’s Cretin begging to be killed rather than spend another day alive in that place. “We care about creatures that can feel and contemplate right from wrong.”
“Does he contemplate right and wrong?” Hunter asked, taking one more right turn and looking at a glass wall that closed off an alcove in the wall, only big enough to stand in.
Inside it was a dark-skinned cretin, the one with the tattoos and the long black dreadlocks. The one who had been following Cue since before she left the dome. They approached the glass slowly, looking into crazed brown eyes as he roared and punched at it ineffectively.
“Funny thing, after capturing him and getting close to here, his horde stopped trailing us,” Hunter said, sidling up to the wall next to the glass and leaning on his side. “Seems this one doesn’t want his horde anywhere near you, or,” he paused, watching as the crazed Cretin kept looking at Cue in the briefest of flicks. “Or, he doesn't want little Cue getting hurt.”
“That's absurd, Cretin’s can't—” Trigger started.
“Can’t what? Think? Isn’t that your debate for not wanting them experimented on?” Hunter laughed. “Watch this,” he said, and then he wrapped his arm around Cue’s head and held a gun to it.
Cue screamed, and Trigger raised her scalpel and roared in rage, but all of it was unheard. For the moment, Hunter put his hands on Cue the Cretin inside lost his mother fucking mind.
Suddenly, the banging on the glass wasn’t so ineffectual. Suddenly, the glass was spiderwebbing and bowing out.
“Shit!” Hunter yelled, pushing Cue away from him and into Trigger.
The banging continued. The screaming raged. The glass splintered more.
“I’m getting out of here!” Hunter cried, tripping over his two feet trying to get away.
But Cue and Trigger didn't move.
The Cretin was no longer screaming and bashing the glass at Hunter, but at them.
Because between where Cue’s and Trigger’s bodies met in a lover’s embrace, the scalpel Trigger had been holding was now plunged into Cue’s chest.
Cue coughed up blood, a smile on her mouth as she looked at Trigger.
“I–I think I love you,” she said, tears steaming down her cheeks.
“No!” Trigger cried, falling to the ground in front of the glass panel right as it shattered. Shards of glass pierced them everywhere as they hit the ground.
Trigger didn’t look up as the Cretin stepped out, the wound in his leg from the subway still slightly oozing blood. He stopped in front of them, his screaming ceased, and crouched.
“Come with me,” He said.
Cue and Trigger looked up at him with wide and terrified eyes.
“Come with me, and she will live!” he roared, and yanked Cue viciously away from Trigger, carrying her like a princess and running faster than any barefooted normal human could have ever possibly run.
