Chapter 107 My light
Chapter 107 My light
Cassain’s POV:
The late afternoon sun cast long shadows across the polished mahogany of my desk, a perfect metaphor for the dark corners of the world I was currently navigating. My office was my sanctuary, a quiet space where the chaos of our empire was reduced to neat columns of numbers and strategic threats. I was deep in a financial report, tracing a series of suspicious transactions that led back to a shell corporation with ties to a Russian syndicate we’d been keeping an eye on. The numbers swam before my eyes, a familiar dance of risk and reward.
The soft click of the door opening didn’t immediately pull me from my trance. It was only the sudden shift in the room's energy, a wave of pure, unadulterated light, that made me look up. And there she was.
She was leaning against the doorframe, a smile so wide, so brilliant, it could have powered the entire villa. It wasn't her usual, mischievous smirk or her seductive, knowing grin. This was different. This was a smile of pure, unburdened joy, a look of profound relief that seemed to make her glow from the inside out. It was so out of place, so starkly contrasted with the darkness of my work, that it caught me completely off guard.
I leaned back in my chair, a slow smile of my own spreading across my face. "Well, look at you," I said, my voice a low, appreciative murmur. "If I didn't know better, I'd say you just won a small war. What has gotten you in such a good mood, little shadow?"
She pushed off the doorframe and glided across the room, her movements fluid and graceful, a stark contrast to the tense, coiled energy she’d been radiating for the past two weeks. She came around my desk, and without a word, settled herself onto my lap, her arm draping over my shoulders. I instinctively wrapped an arm around her waist, pulling her closer, the scent of jasmine and the faint smell of sweat from her training filling my senses.
"I had a talk with Zero," she said, her voice soft, but clear.
I tensed, my hand stilling on her hip. Zero. The ghost. The source of her recent torment. I had seen the way his presence affected her, the way it chipped away at her carefully constructed armor. I had been preparing for a fight, for a breakdown, for the need to clean up the emotional fallout.
She must have felt me stiffen, because she squeezed my shoulder gently. "It's okay," she said, her voice reassuring. "It's a good thing. A really good thing."
She proceeded to tell me everything. The fight, the breakdown, his confession. She explained how she had always thought him incapable of emotion, a cold, calculating machine who had seen her as nothing more than a tool to be sharpened and discarded. But it turns out, he was just afraid. Afraid of his own feelings, afraid of what their connection might cost her in our brutal world.
"He told me he always saw me as his daughter, Cassain," she whispered, her head resting on my chest now. "He said he pushed me away because he was scared of being my weakness. He's been watching over me this whole time. All this time, I thought he hated me, but he was just… protecting me in his own broken way."
As she spoke, I felt a warmth spreading through my chest, a sense of relief for her. I knew what it was like to carry the weight of a complicated past, to have ghosts that haunted your present. To see her free of this particular one, to see her so light, so happy… it was a gift.
"I'm happy for you, Seraphina," I said, my voice sincere. I kissed the top of her head, my lips lingering in her hair. "Truly."
We fell into a comfortable silence after that. She stayed on my lap, her head resting on my chest, her finger tracing idle patterns on my forearm as I turned my attention back to the report. The numbers on the page seemed less daunting now, less threatening. With her here, the darkness of our world felt a little less oppressive.
Her tracing slowed, and I felt her shift, her gaze lifting to meet mine. Her eyes were soft, vulnerable, and filled with an emotion that made my breath catch.
"You know I love you, right?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.
My heart did a strange lurch in my chest. "Yes," I said, my voice a little rougher than I intended. "I know."
"I know I don't show it much," she continued, her eyes searching mine. "I'm not good with… feelings. With words. But I really do love you. All three of you. My life wouldn't be complete without you three."
I was silent for a second, the weight of her words settling over me. Love. It was a dangerous, complicated thing in our world. A liability, a weakness, a target. But looking at her now, feeling the warmth of her body against mine, I knew it was also the only thing that made any of it worthwhile. It was our strength. Our anchor in the storm.
I leaned down and kissed her forehead, a soft, deliberate press of my lips against her skin. "You'll always be ours, little shadow," I murmured, my voice thick with an emotion I rarely let myself show. "Now and forever."
