Chapter 90
Chapter 93
Levy
“Fuck,” I say out loud as Lex looks me in the eye. “So, you’re telling me that Jake had a kid brother?”
Lex nods. We’re sitting in his den. It’s actually the basement of his house and runs about four hundred square meters. He has also sots of monitors and screens hooked up. The man runs a private surveillance company on top of being a marine. How he fits it all in is beyond me but he does. Of course, he has a whole team. No, a whole village of people that support him and his brothers.
“And you’re telling me that the kid was around five or six when Jake died?”
“That’s correct. Man, are you going to fucking sit down? You’re making me anxious with all that pacing. Besides, I just had this floor laid and you’re gonna wear it out.” His voice is good natured but I can tell that my stressing is stressing him out.
I run my fingers through my hair, at this rate I am going to bald. “And stop doing that with your hair. You need to chill out, none of this was your fault, Levy.”
The hell it was. “Let me go over this one more time. The brother was five or six, Jake was eighteen and that was eighteen years ago.” Lex nods in agreement. “That would make him about twenty-three or twenty-four now.”
“Bingo. Nothing wrong with your math so why the hell you didn’t do great in math is anyone’s guess,” his voice is laced with sarcasm.
“Cut it out, Lex. The mobile number is traced back to this kid’s mobile.”
“Only, he isn’t a kid anymore, Levy. He is the head of The Criminals On Wheels gang. That makes him pretty dangerous.”
I let out an exhale. “You think it’s him exacting revenge on me?”
“It could be. It’s registered to his address. It took me some time to find this out but yeah, he lives in the same damn house that he grew up in. His mother passed away seven years ago; the father died a few years back. He inherited the property and the land that went with it. They run the gang out of the back yard. Only, it’s not a back yard, they have plenty of land.”
“The Criminals on Wheels have been causing a lot of trouble, right?” Again, Lex nods. “And aren’t they responsible for the death of one of their own members? Some guy called,” I place two fingers on my temples. Fuck, I’m getting one hell of a stomping headache right now. “Can’t remember his name. Think it begins with an F.” You’d think I’d be able to remember the name of a recently murdered biker. Same gang or rival gang or not, that kind of shit isn’t something you easily forget.
“Flynn, his name was Flynn. Apparently, according to my sources he hurt one of the other gang member’s women. If you know what I mean. He got a knife to the gut in a dark alley near their dingey biker’s hang out bar.”
“Fuck’s sake. And this kid, this guy what’s his name?” Like that will make any difference to me right now. It would appear that he thinks I am responsible for his brother’s death. And with the reputation his gang has, it isn’t going to be a pretty situation. My gut churns thinking about what they could do to my family, which includes Harper. It hits me like a tornado that Harper is my family now.
My phone vibrates in my pocket. I pull it out and check. It’s a message from Harper.
Need to see you asap. Something happened today outside the rehab place.
My skin runs cold and shivers go down my spine. “Everything okay?” Lex asks as he looks up from the three monitors in front of him.
“Yeah, Harper needs to talk. Give me a few minutes. I’ll call her right now.”
“Okay. Let me try and find out where he is right now. By the way, his name is Dash.”
“What kind of name is that? And how didn’t we even know that Jake had a brother.”
Lex shrugs. “He didn’t tell us a whole busting lot did he to be honest.”
“He was my closest friend growing up alongside you guys. I never knew he had a kid brother.”
“Didn’t you ever go to his place?” Lex seems surprised.
“Never, his father was an alcoholic, he never wanted me to go round. Always preferred to come to my folk’s place. That’s a big thing to keep hidden.”
“No idea, Man. Call your woman back it could be something urgent. Didn’t her mother get out today?” Lex asks.
I nod as I hit the call icon on the screen for Harper’s mobile.
“Hey,” she says instantly like she was waiting for my call.
“Hey yourself, baby. How did it go? Is your momma settled in at home now?”
“Yes, but something happened and it has scared the living shit out of me.”
Her voice has a quiver to it, almost sounding as if she is on the verge of tears. “Baby, tell me what’s going on. I come round straight away I am only at Lex’s. It’ll take me thirty minutes to get to you.”
Harper takes a few deep breaths. Whatever it is, I have a gut feeling I am not going to like it.
“There was a biker outside the rehab place, in the car park. He did the slitting throat sign and was looking at my car and me.”
The fuck. The holy fucking fuck! “Did you get a good look at him?” I ask as Lex looks up at me with furrowed eyebrows.
“He was wearing a black helmet and dressed all in black. What is this about, Levy? You have got to tell me what the hell is happening. First, you go out of town and then some random guy threatens me in the car park. I am scared.”
“Okay, listen to me, baby. Nobody can get you right now. You have detail outside the house, an alarm system. Lock the doors and windows, can you do that for me?”
“Levy, you are frightening me.”
“I know, baby. I know. Lex will organize for some additional guys to come round and surround the property. Stay inside and do not under any circumstances let your momma or Taylor out. Okay, do you understand, Harper?” Perhaps my tone is a little bit too serious but I need to hit home that she must do as I ask her.
If we are dealing with a gang member from The Criminals then it’s a huge fucking deal.
“Now, I am going to hang up and speak with Lex to get guys to surround the place. Then I need to make a call to Dylan to get him home safe. I want everyone as close as possible. As soon as I get back, I will bring him over and we are going to sit down and I can tell you what this is about.”
“Okay,” she stutters as she speaks. My fucking heart is cracking for her being so scared and feeling alone right now and once again, having to deal with more shit and be the adult here.
We hang up and Lex gives me a look. “I think it could be the brother.”
“I need a fucking name, Lex.” I pause and take a long, deep breath. “Sorry, Man. I shouldn’t have lost my shit like that with you.”
“Hey,” he says putting his hands up in the air. “No problem. If my family had been threatened, I find the fucker and put a bullet straight through their head.”
“Yeah, well we can’t go round killing people for standing in car parks, Lex.”
“No, you can’t,” he says pointedly. “But my team can. We can cover it up. If someone so much as hurts you and your family, Brother. Trust me, the boys and I - we’re fucking coming for them!”
