Chapter 81 Explosions of tensions

The revelation of Elara’s identity not just as the Empress V, but as the ghost from Damien’s past, the ex-wife he had divorced had turned the gala into a drama show.

Damien stood shaking, his eyes bloodshot, watching as his former peers, his investors, and even his own board members began to move toward Elara like iron metal to a magnet. The power shift was visible for every one to see.

"You think you can just walk back in here?" Damien’s voice was rough, cutting through the murmurs of the people around. "You think you can take years of my work and call it your reclamation.

Elara didn't look back as she began to turn away, her silver gown shining. "It was thirty six months of me fixing your balance sheets while you were busy playing the part of a leader. I’m not taking your work. I’m taking mine back."

The dismissal was the final straw. The last shred of Damien’s composure snapped. In a blind, unthinking flash of rage and entitlement, he lunged forward.

His hand shot out, his fingers bruising Elara as they clamped tightly around her slender wrist. He jerked her back toward him, his face inches from hers, his breath smelling of expensive scotch.

"You aren't going anywhere" he shouted his voice echoing in the sudden, silence that came upon the room. "You are going to stand here and tell them the truth. You were a Vance spy. This was all a long term con. You’re still my—"

Elara didn't scream. She didn't even flinch. She simply went still, her emerald eyes turning into a glass of frozen sea.

"Let go of me, Damien," she said, her voice low. "You are making a scene that you cannot afford."

"I don't care about the scene" Damien roared, his grip tightening. "I’ll break you into pieces before I let you walk away with my life again.

The guests gasped, some pulling out their phones to record the visible fall of the thorne king, others stepping back in genuine horror. But before Damien could pull her another inch, the world seemed to shift.

Julian didn't run, he moved with a speed that defied the laws of a man in a bespoke tuxedo. One moment he was a step behind Elara, a silent guardian the next, he was a force of nature.

His hand clamped onto Damien’s forearm like a hydraulic vice. With a sharp, intense twist of his wrist, Julian forced Damien’s hand open, prying his fingers off Elara with a strength that made the bones in Damien’s arm crack.

The sound of Damien’s arm being forced back echoed through the silent hall, followed by a sharp gasp of pain from Damien.

Damien stumbled back, clutching his wrist, his face turning a sickly shade of white. He looked up at Julian, seeing not a business icon, not a tech mogul, but an enemy who had finally been given a reason to strike.

The silence that followed was absolute. You could have heard a pin drop on the tiled floor. The elite of Hudson watched, breathless, as Julian took a single, slow step toward Damien.

Julian’s voice wasn't loud, but it carried to the very back of the ballroom.

“Don't you ever put your hands on my woman again.”

The words hit the room like a physical shockwave. It wasn't "my partner." It wasn't "the CEO." It was a claim of ownership and protection so pure and absolute that it redefined every alliance in the room.

Damien looked around, his eyes wild, looking for support. He found only the cold, judgmental stares of the people he had spent a decade trying to impress. He saw his mother at Table 4, her lip curled in disgust. He saw the SEC auditors already making notes. He saw his own reflection in the mirrors a small, shaking man who had tried to bully a woman and been broken by her instead.

"Julian," Damien stammered, his voice shaking but loud. "You... you’re throwing it all away for her? You’re making this personal?"

"It was always personal, Damien," Julian said, his hand resting lightly on the small of Elara’s back, pulling her into his side. "You just weren't smart enough to realize that.

Elara stepped out from behind Julian, her wrist already showing the faint, red marks of Damien’s grip. She looked at Damien with a pity that was more devastating than any blow Julian could have landed.

"Security," Elara said, her voice ringing out across the hall.

Four Aegis operatives, dressed in black suits that blended into the shadows, appeared instantly.

"Mr. Thorne’s invitation has been revoked," she continued, her eyes on Damien. "Escort him out. And ensure the press gets a clear shot of the exit. I want the world to see what happens to a man who thinks he can touch the Empress."

Damien tried to protest, but the security guards were efficient. They grabbed him by the arms, nearly lifting him off the floor. As he was dragged toward the grand doors, he kicked and screamed, a pathetic, screeching sound that filled the ballroom.

"This isn't over, Elara. You hear me? I’ll ruin you Julian, I’ll find out who you really…..

The doors slammed shut behind him, cutting off his voice in mid rant.

The silence that returned to the room was different now. It was a silence of submission. Every guest in the room, from the highest senator to the lowliest intern, realized they were standing in the presence of a new, power.

Elara turned to Julian. The "Business Partner" mask was gone. For a moment, her eyes looked into his, looking for the man who had just claimed her in front of the entire world.

"You shouldn't have said that," she whispered, though her hand sought his in the folds of her gown. "The press will never let it go."

Julian leaned down, his lips brushing her temple in a gesture that was both tender and terrifyingly possessive. "Let them talk, Elara. I’m tired of being just your ally. I’d rather be your king."

He turned back to the room, raising a hand. The cello music resumed, but this time it was a triumphant, soaring melody.

"The Coronation continues," Julian announced to the stunned crowd. "Enjoy the champagne. It’s the most expensive thing you’ll ever taste that was paid for by a ghost."

As the guests slowly began to move again, the whispers starting up like a swarm of bees, Elara and Julian in the center of the floor. They were a singular unit, an alliance of silver and black that had just survived its first public trial.
