Chapter 233 Right Over Zephyr
She reached blindly behind him, twisting the heavy brass faucet to shut off the freezing spray. She grabbed a thick towel from the heated rack, draping it over his broad, shaking shoulders as she gently led her heartbroken Alpha out of the bathroom and into the quiet dark of the bedroom.
Fennigan moved like a man entirely hollowed out. Leela guided him to the edge of the mattress, gently pushing on his chest until he lay back against the sheets. Stripped of his armor and completely naked, his massive frame shivered violently in the cool air of the room, the freezing water finally catching up to the crushing emotional shock of the night.
Leela looked down at her own soaked clothes, the icy fabric clinging uncomfortably to her skin. She couldn't hold him like this, and she couldn't bring that freezing cold into their bed.
Turning her back for just a few seconds, she moved swiftly. She peeled off her heavy, wet garments, dropping them onto the floorboards with a soft, wet slap and leaving the puddle exactly where it fell. She quickly changed into something warm and dry, not wanting him to be alone for a second longer than necessary, and climbed onto the mattress beside him.
Leela grabbed the edge of the thick, heavy duvet and pulled it high, completely covering his shivering, naked body and draping it warmly over her own legs. She leaned her back against the headboard, settling deep into the pillows.
Following his deepest, most primal instinct for comfort, Fennigan immediately curled his massive frame inward. He shifted closer, laying his heavy head perfectly in her lap, his wet cheek pressing gently against the soft swell of her baby bump.
Right over Zephyr.
Leela didn't say a word. She knew he didn't need logic, war strategies, or reassurances right now; he just needed to know he was safe, and that he was entirely loved.
She began to gently run her fingers through his wet, dark hair, massaging his scalp in a slow, rhythmic motion. Deep in her chest, she started to hum a soft, ancient lullaby, the soothing vibration rumbling directly against his ear. Beneath his cheek, he could hear the steady, fluttering heartbeat of their unborn pup, a pure and untainted spark of life safely insulated from the nightmare below.
Surrounded by the heavy warmth of the blankets, the protective hum of his mate's voice, and the heartbeat of his future, the last of Fennigan's walls completely crumbled. Fresh, agonizing tears soaked silently into the fabric covering Leela's legs as he cried, letting the crushing weight of the night finally pour out of him.
The dark, quiet room held them both as the impenetrable Alpha completely unraveled.
He didn't give her the specifics. Fennigan refused to taint her mind with the image of the mutated heart beating in the dark, or the sickening reality of the petri dishes resting on the butcher’s block. Instead, he just murmured broken, exhausted fragments into the heavy blankets covering her legs.
He whispered about the sheer scale of the betrayal. He murmured about the cold, absolute depravity of a father who could build a slaughterhouse beneath his own family's feet. Leela didn't press him for the details. She simply stroked his wet hair, absorbing the poison of his grief and letting the steady, innocent heartbeat of their unborn pup act as his anchor.
Slowly, the violent, shuddering breaths began to ease. The agonizing knot in his chest, pulled tight since the moment the bunker doors first opened, finally unspooled.
When the last of the tears were spent, a profound, quiet peace settled over the Alpha suite. The emotional release had completely hollowed him out, but it also left the darkness behind.
Fennigan took one final, deep breath, inhaling the pure, comforting scent of his mate, and slowly pushed his massive frame up from the mattress. He moved with a quiet, renewed strength. He walked over to the dresser in the dark, pulling on a pair of soft, dark sweatpants, leaving his chest bare as the chill of the freezing shower finally left his bones.
He turned back to the bed. Leela was already sitting up, pushing the heavy duvet aside.
Fennigan reached out, his large, calloused hand gently enveloping hers. As she stood up, he pulled her flush against his chest, wrapping his arms around her waist. He tipped her chin up and kissed her—a deep, fiercely tender kiss that held absolutely nothing back. It was a silent vow that the monsters were dead, and their future was safe.
"Let's go back," Fennigan murmured softly against her lips, his glowing silver eyes finally clear. "I need my pack."
Leela smiled, her heart swelling with an overwhelming love for the man standing in front of her. She squeezed his hand, refusing to let go.
Together, the Alpha and Luna walked out of the suite and back down the dimly lit corridor. They navigated the quiet halls of the packhouse, heading straight for the shuttered sunroom where Caspian, Briar, and the rest of their bruised but unbreakable family were waiting for them in the dark.
The heavy oak door to the sunroom opened with a soft, barely audible click.
The room was exactly as they had left it—bathed in the warm, insulated amber glow of the single reading lamp, completely sealed off from the outside world by the thick wooden shutters. The soft, rhythmic sound of peaceful breathing filled the space. Jax and Ginny were deeply asleep on their mattress, little Iggy tucked safely between them. Elana was resting quietly on the wicker couch, her face finally relaxed after the agonizing revelations of the night.
As Fennigan and Leela stepped into the room, Sarah looked up from her spot against the wall. Seeing her Alpha and Luna return whole and anchored, the loyal guard offered a tired, respectful nod. She gently closed her paperback book, set it on the slate floor, and finally allowed her own exhaustion to take over. Shifting carefully so she didn't wake Toby, Sarah settled down onto her mattress and closed her eyes, quickly drifting off to sleep.
