Chapter 122 Two Tasks, One Goal
Chapter 122 Two Tasks, One Goal
Dawn broke over Atheria, but it brought no warmth.
The valley behind the waterfall was now silent. There was no more laughter, no more whispers of hope. All that remained was dust, the lingering residue of the black mist, and tears frozen on the cheeks of the dragons.
Lyla stood at the edge of the egg circle, her hands still trembling. Beside her, Lysander gripped her fingers tightly, offering wordless strength. The tiny dragon born last night—whom Elara had begun to call Aurelius—slept in the lap of an elder silver dragon who kept a loyal watch.
Two eggs were gone. Two lives that had not yet seen the world, snatched away into the darkness.
"We can't just sit here," Lyla said, breaking the silence.
Lysander nodded. "But we also can't leave the others unprotected. They're wounded. These eggs are vulnerable. And we don't know when the shadows will return."
Kronos, sitting on a large rock with his body covered in bandages, lifted his head. "We divide the labor. I’ll stay here and lead the defense. Let the young ones learn to guard. They need the experience."
"I’ll stay too," Elara interrupted, her voice still shaky but firm. "I can't fight with my wings still torn. But I can look after these babies. I can learn."
Lyla looked at both of them, then at the other dragons who began to nod one by one. In their eyes, she saw fear, but also resolve. They wouldn't give up—not after coming this far.
"Alright," Lyla said. "We divide the tasks. Kronos, you lead the team staying behind. Focus on three things: first, treating the wounded. Second, relocating the eggs to a safer spot deeper within the cave. And third..." she glanced at the sleeping hatchling, "...train those who can still fight. We don't know when the shadows will strike again."
Kronos nodded, though his face was etched with hesitation. "And you? What will you do?"
Lysander stepped forward. "We’re going after the two missing eggs. And we’re going to find out what the shadows really want."
"Alone?" the old copper dragon asked, his eyes narrowing.
"Not alone." Lyla scanned the crowd. "I need two volunteers. Fast, strong, and unafraid of death."
A brief silence followed. Then, from the back row, two figures stepped forward.
The first was Kael. The Shadow Dragon who had once allied with Linda but was now trying to find his way home. His dim red eyes met Lyla’s without expression.
"I know their terrain. I know how they think. I can help."
Lyla stared at him for a long moment, then nodded. "You’re in. But you don't have to fight. Just show us the way."
Kael nodded and stood beside Lysander.
The second was Darian, the young silver dragon who had been rescued alongside Elara. His eyes burned with a spirit he couldn't hide.
"I won't stand by while my kin are kidnapped," he stated firmly. "I'm going."
Lyla gave a thin smile. "Are you sure? This won't be easy."
"I’ve dealt with 'not easy' my entire life. At least this time, I’m choosing it."
Once the team was formed, preparations began.
Lyla spent the next two hours ensuring all the wounded received care. Her Blazing Tides, though still weak, were enough to stabilize the severe injuries. One by one, the dragons who had been groaning in pain began to breathe sighs of relief.
Kronos led the construction of a new barricade around the cave. Using massive boulders and earth magic, they built a defensive wall that ordinary shadows couldn't penetrate. Some of the younger dragons were taught defensive techniques—not for attacking, but for protecting the remaining eggs.
Elara and several others focused on the newborns. They fashioned small beds out of dried leaves and feathers, warming them with gentle dragon breath. Aurelius, the little golden dragon, was given a special spot near the hearth—exactly where the light of Lyla’s Blazing Tides was strongest.
"I won't let anything happen to him," Elara promised Lyla, her eyes welling up. "I swear it."
Lyla patted her shoulder gently. "I trust you."
As the sun reached its zenith, the rescue team prepared to depart.
Lyla, Lysander, Kael, and Darian stood at the edge of the valley, facing west—where the black mist had last been seen.
"I’ve mapped out the likely locations of their nests," Kael said, unfurling a leather scroll. "There are three most probable spots. The first is here, behind the northern waterfall. The second is here, at the bottom of the frozen lake. And the third..." he paused, pointing to the darkest spot on the map, "...under the ruins of the ancient city, the place where our clan lived before the civil war."
Lysander frowned. "The ancient city? That’s not far from here."
"Because they never really left. They just hid." Kael looked directly at Lysander. "For thousands of years, they watched. They waited. And now, with the birth of those hatchlings..." he sighed, "...they see an opportunity."
Lyla squeezed her hands together. "An opportunity for what?"
Kael shook his head. "That, I don't know. Maybe to resurrect something long dead. Maybe to create a new generation of shadow dragons. But one thing is for sure: they won't stop until all those eggs are in their hands."
Lysander clenched his fist. "Then we have to move fast."
They said their goodbyes to Kronos and the others. Elara hugged Lyla tightly, tears streaming down her face.
"Bring our kin back," she whispered. "Bring those babies home."
Lyla brushed her hair. "I promise."
Behind them, Aurelius woke up for a moment. His blue-golden eyes watched Lyla, then he let out a small yawn, showing his newly sprouted tiny teeth. Lyla smiled, then turned away.
The rescue team shot into the air, leaving a quieting Atheria behind.
Below, Kronos organized the ranks. The healthy dragons stood at the barricade, eyes alert as they scanned the horizon. Elara sat beside the eggs, singing an old song—one that dragon mothers once sang to lull their children to sleep.
The war wasn't over. But for now, they held the line. And in the distance, hope flew with Lyla and Lysander, piercing the clouds toward the place where the darkness hid.
The rescue mission had begun.
