Chapter 119 Two Battlefronts
Chapter 119 Two Battlefronts
The sky above the southern island turned into a living hell.
As Lyla and Lysander arrived, the sight that greeted them made their blood run cold. The black sand beach was stained with blood—gold blood, green blood, silver blood. Their dragons lay scattered everywhere; some were still struggling, while others lay motionless. Black shadows circled in the air like birds of prey, launching relentless attacks from every direction.
Kronos was in the thick of it, his massive frame covered in wounds. His black scales were torn away in several places, revealing flesh beneath that throbbed with shadow poison. But he refused to yield. His black fire still roared, incinerating the shadows that dared to draw near.
"KRONOS!" Lyla screamed. The Blazing Tides exploded from her body, forming a blue tidal wave that swept away the shadows surrounding the black dragon.
Lysander descended like a meteor, his golden fire forming a protective ring around the wounded dragons. "Kronos! Report!"
Kronos coughed, dark blood leaking from his maw. "They... they got into the cave... the eggs..."
Lyla didn't wait another second. She bolted toward the cave entrance, but two shadows immediately blocked her path. Her Blazing Tides lashed out, burning them away, but more surged forward. It was as if the darkness was bottomless.
"Lyla! I’ll handle things out here! Get inside!" Lysander roared, his golden flames forming a wall between the beach and the cave.
Lyla nodded and tore through the entrance.
Inside the cave, the darkness was even denser. A black mist filled every corner, making the air feel heavy and freezing. Lyla ignited the Blazing Tides as brightly as possible, lighting the way with a blue radiance that flickered against the crushing weight of the shadows.
She ran, passing through the tunnels she had once walked in peace. Now, the walls were cracked, and the ancient carvings were defaced by black gashes. And in the main chamber...
Lyla stopped dead.
Three massive shadows stood before the altar where the eggs were still neatly arranged. Around them, the black mist was crawling, touching the eggs one by one, trying to seep through the shells. The eggs were vibrating—not because they were about to hatch, but because they were fighting back.
"Don't you touch them!" Lyla screamed, sending the Blazing Tides lashing forward.
One shadow was swept away, but the other two turned. Their red eyes flared, staring at Lyla with a burning malice.
"Princess of Light," one hissed, its voice echoing through the chamber. "You arrived just in time. The ritual is nearly complete. These infants will become our greatest weapons."
Lyla didn't bother answering. She attacked.
The battle inside the cave was brutal. The cramped space made it difficult to maneuver the Blazing Tides at full capacity, while the shadows could slip through any crack. Lyla took hits to her arm, her back, and her leg. But she didn't stop. Every time a shadow fell, she took a step closer to the altar.
Outside, Lysander was facing a situation just as dire. Shadows continued to manifest, and among them, he saw larger silhouettes—perhaps the true Shadow Dragons who had been hiding behind the mist all along.
"Kronos! Get the wounded to the back!" he commanded, his golden fire forming a shield around the dragons who could still move.
Kronos nodded, even though his body was on the verge of collapse. He carried two dragons at once, dragging them to a safer area behind the cliffs. But one by one, more dragons were falling. Too many were wounded. Too few were left to fight.
Lysander felt panic creeping into his chest. Through their bond, he could feel Lyla starting to tire inside the cave. Outside, his forces were being broken.
But in the midst of that desperation, something happened.
From inside the cave, a blue light exploded—not just a normal blast, but something brighter, warmer, and more... alive. Simultaneously, the shadows outside stopped moving. They turned toward the cave, and for the first time, Lysander saw something he never expected: fear.
Inside the cave, Lyla knelt before the altar, gasping for air. The two massive shadows had been destroyed, but she was completely spent. Yet around her, the eggs... were changing.
The blue light wasn't just coming from her body. It was emanating from the eggs themselves. One by one, the shells that had been coated in ice began to glow—blue, red, green, gold—as if they were waking from a long slumber. That light, coming from dozens of eggs at once, scoured the remaining shadows from the room.
Outside, the shadows began to shriek. They melted and evaporated, swallowed by the radiance pouring out of the cave mouth.
Lysander didn't waste a second. "ATTACK!" he roared, leading the remaining dragons to finish off the enemy.
The battle raged for another hour. But this time, they were the ones doing the hunting. The shadows fled, retreating into the mist, back to wherever they hid. As the sun began to tilt toward the west, the beach fell silent again. An exhausting, heavy silence.
Lyla emerged from the cave, her body covered in wounds. In her arms, she cradled a small egg—the pale gold one that had first caught her eye. It was still glowing softly, warm against her skin.
"Lyla!" Lysander ran to her, pulling her into a tight embrace. "Are you... are you okay?"
"I'm okay." Lyla gave a weary smile. "But they... they woke up. Not fully, but they fought. The eggs fought the shadows."
Lysander looked at the egg in her hands. Through the thin shell, he could faintly see the silhouette of a tiny creature moving.
"They're strong," he whispered.
"They're our children," Lyla replied. "Of course they're strong."
Kronos approached, his body covered in emergency bandages. His rugged face softened as he looked at the glowing eggs inside the cave.
"Some didn't make it," he said softly. "Three of us."
Lyla looked down. "We will honor them. But right now, we have to get these eggs home. Before they come back."
Lysander nodded. "I'll call for the others. We move them all tonight."
Inside the cave, the eggs continued to glow—dozens of tiny lights dancing in the dark. They were safe. For now, that was all that mattered.
