Chapter 30 The other two
Bip! Bip!
I turned to the strange car just outside Bellwitch street.
With a hand over my brow in the now hot sun, I squinted at the driver’s window. But the sleek car was tinted, and I had that buzzing on my skin that was becoming familiar.
That was the Dragon.
I walked a few feet, and joined the small group at the zebra crossing to the other side of the road.
“You’ll never do that again.” His voice was dark, more angry than usual as I closed the passenger door.
I shot him a nervous glance. He had on a pair of dark sunglasses, and his long hair was clipped at the base of his neck.
With one muscled arm on the steering wheel, he looked perfect for a candid vogue photograph.
“I was alone when I woke up.” I turned my eyes to the floor mat.
“We left you for less than three hours.” He took his leg off the brakes.
I slammed back against the seat with a gasp.
His head whipped in my direction, and I hurriedly pulled the seatbelt across my chest, my throat was beginning to burn with that hot itch.
Why was he so mean?
The car was silent as he drove fast from the Moonveil coven and the surrounding area. I licked my lips.
Even for a Dragon, this was crazy driving. Why was he home anyway? He could have been at work, high up in the skies.
“Backseat,” he said suddenly. My shoulders quivered.
He glanced at me, and I hurriedly turned to the backseat. Where the hell was Hale, and why would he let his sourpuss boyfriend come pick me up?
“Why are you so nervy?” he asked as I reached for the fast food bag in the back seat. “You have spent the most time with me, but somehow seem to be more relaxed around the other two.”
My hand froze on the food bag. Why did he sound so bothered?
As I pulled back, clutching the brown bag, our shoulders brushed. His body was warm, nicely so, like a heated blanket on a winter's night.
The feeling transported me to waking up yesterday morning with our naked bodies pressed together, to his hands in the bathroom, mapping my body.
My cheeks burned. But I felt compelled to lean into him despite the dreams, Grandma's dissatisfaction and Arthur's disgusted rage.
Will you give me your love?
I yanked myself away, even though there was no escape. He was a solid presence in the car, and he seemed like all I could see, breath.
Fire and lilies.
What man wore lily-scented cologne, by the way? Maybe dragons saw these things differently.
I peeled the box of chicken open when he took his glasses off, and took a sharp bend.
My body titled left, jolting against him.
“You have not answered me, wolf-girl.”
Our eyes met, and a thrill ran down my back.
What are the odds that I would share the exact same eyes with the last dragon in the world?
“Lys. My name is Lys, it rhymes with Please.” I swallowed back a giggle at the awfully timed joke. “That is what the other two…” I stressed, “Call me.”
He was silent.
My shoulders locked, and my heart started to pound. Rhea immediately folded into a ball beneath my ribs.
He would roast me. He would roast me and eat me for lunch.
It was difficult to chew in the long silence, but then I summoned courage to steal a peek at him and found he had been watching me the whole time.
His face looked normal. Angry as usual, but not extra angry.
I exhaled in relief and wolfed down my meal. I had not realized how hungry I was.
“Thank you.” I whispered, bundling the trash into a compact box.
“I dislike fast foods, and you cannot eat it unnecessarily,” was his response.
I pressed my lips flat, turning to the window. Why did he buy it then?
“But vampire-boy…” he cleared his throat noisily. “Finn is out with Hale, and I don’t know how you like your meals made.”
The car slowed as he honked at the driver in front, moving at a snail's pace.
“Women seem to like these things, so I thought you might too.”
I turned.
Besides dirty talking, these were the most words I had ever heard him say.
It was usually grunts and scowls.
My eyes narrowed. Could Hale have given him some kind of lecture on politeness, or was he just impatient to pull me in bed with them?
Dragon or not, he was inhabiting a man’s body and all men were the same.
“Thank you.” I turned back to the window.
In the silence, I shifted uncomfortably on my seat at the memories that assaulted me. The sex dreams, his hands, the sight of his cock in Hale's hand.
The car felt so bloody hot. And tight.
“Here,” I heard beside me.
I turned to find him stretching out a bottle of mostly iced water. “It’s my body’s heat.”
With a wordless nod, I took the bottle from him. I was not about to tell him how wrong he was.
He turned to the unassuming factory gate Hale had driven out from yesterday when he dropped me off at the academy.
The gate was a portal to their mansion.
Before I could unbukle my seatbelt, he was already opening my door.
“Thank you.” I gave a polite smile.
He shrugged. Then he took off his jacket and threw it around my shoulder.
I was nervous now. The man who literally barked at me in that car was no ladies’ man.
He wanted something.
“The weather is cold,” he stared into my eyes.
I swallowed, my belly doing cartwheels. I should remind him I was a werewolf and we could handle a little chill. But again, I said.
“Thank you.”
“Are those the only words you know?” He walked behind me, but reached for the doorknob first and pushed the front door open.
I remained quiet, walking up the many stairs to our bedroom. If Finn was out with Hale, it meant we were home alone.
By the time I pushed the bedroom door open, I was a ball of nerves and could not hold back anymore.
“Do you need something?” I spun around.
He paused, and then kicked the door shut.
I jumped. But did not look away as he walked closer.
If he could put his veil on me, claim me in more ways than one, I had the right to look him in the eye.
“I don't want to hack into your memory to learn about you. So I was thinking we could spend the day together.”
I blinked.
He did that smirk-smile he did in the bathroom my first day here. “If we’re going to be fucking, we should at least know more than our names.”
My cheeks burned even though we had seen each other naked more than once at this point.
“Tell me about her.” I said suddenly. “The woman on your back.”
