HAVEN
I sigh as my hand shakes and the paper falls to the floor for the millionth time.
I've been trying to get this simple thing figured out but it seems like the universe is against me.
Focus Haven.
I take in a deep breath, close my eyes and try once more. I try to implement what Auren had taught me yesterday.
Imagine the paper moving in your mind. Use your senses to control whatever direction you want it to move to.
When I peel open my eyes, the paper is suspended mid air. I lose focus, and yet it doesn't fall back down.
A wave of excitement washes through me as I stare at my little accomplishment. It's been three days since Auren started teaching me how to use my powers. So far the highest I can do is control a mild flame.
And he says I'm doing great! At the rate I'm going, the universe will be destroyed before I can master how to me move the teapot from the stove to the floor.
Fucking Great!!
“You should get some rest." Auren's voice has me turning to the door to find standing by the doorway, hands in his pockets. “You've been at this the whole afternoon. Let's go for a stroll."
He extends his hand and I don't hesitate like I would in the past. He leads me down the corridor and out to the gardens in complete and utter silence.
“You shouldn't exert yourself too much, Little Flame," he says, breaking the peaceful silence. I look up at him. He's a good one foot taller so it's a chore to his look at him.
“I've been having increasing dreams lately. I think my mom's trying to tell me something but I can't quite point out what it is," I say. I hadn't meant to keep it from him, but it's been quite chaotic lately, it practically skipped my mind. “Something's out there Auren, I can feel it. It's only a matter of time before things escalate."
I can feel it!
Something reflecting the fae energy in me. A darker version that had me thinking it could be my mom. But I thought better of it and it's not her.
All the times we've spoken, she's always been surrounded by this thread of dark energy. I know it's the forbidden magic, holding her captive in the remnants of its curse.
I come to a stop and turn to Auren who has also halted his footsteps. “What if I fail?"
He stares at me for an impossibly long minute, then places his hands on my shoulders. “If the forbidden magic chose you, then it knows you are capable. If you are not then I guess you'll just condemn us all to damnation.”
He pulls me into his arms and I waste no second wrapping my arms around him and burying my face into his chest.
I know danger is lurking out there somewhere, and I am not going to stop until I had found it and put an end to it.
