Chapter 34: Determination in the Shadows

The night at the villa was heavier than usual. Sofia sat on the balcony, looking out over the dark garden below. The cold wind pierced her skin, but she didn't care. Her mind keeps spinning, replaying the events at the barn last night.

Ricardo appeared with a cup of hot tea. “You have to stop blaming yourself,” he says, placing the cup on the small table beside Sofia.

“I don't blame myself,” Sofia lied, her voice barely audible.

Ricardo sat in the chair next to her, looking at her sharply. “Don't pretend, Sofia. I can see it in your eyes.”

Sofia took a deep breath, trying to master her emotions. “I just feel... if I'd been more careful, maybe we wouldn't have been nearly caught. Everyone is depending on me, Ricardo. And I can't let them down.”

Ricardo looked at her empathetically. “You didn't let anyone down. Even in such a bad situation, you kept your cool. That's what got us out alive.”

Sofia smiled slightly, though her heart was still full of doubts.

In the morning, Giovanni calls an emergency meeting in the meeting room. Everyone was present, including Alessandra and a few other confidants. On the table, Giovanni spread copies of the photos Ricardo had taken from the warehouse.

“This document proves what we suspected all along,” Giovanni said seriously. “Andrei is working with international organizations to smuggle weapons and drugs. If this isn't stopped, he'll become more powerful than we ever imagined.”

Alessandra nodded. “But to stop him, we need more than just information. We need evidence that will destroy his reputation in the eyes of his allies.”

“How?” asked Sofia, her eyes thoughtful.

Giovanni pointed to one of the names on the document. “This. Someone inside Andrei's network that we might be able to approach. A contact named Viktor Mikhailov.”

Ricardo narrowed his eyes. “Viktor is notoriously cunning. He won't be easy to work with, let alone against Andrei.”

“But he has a price,” Giovanni said. “Everyone has a price.”

Sofia and Ricardo are assigned to approach Viktor. They must travel to a small town on the border, where Viktor is rumored to frequent.

In the car, Ricardo glances at Sofia, who sits quietly next to him. “Are you sure about this?”

Sofia nodded. “If Viktor is the key to bringing Andrei down, I'll do whatever it takes to get him to cooperate.”

Ricardo smiled slightly. “That's what I admire about you, Sofia. Your determination.”

Sofia turns to him, slightly surprised by his words. However, before she could answer, Ricardo's phone rang.

Giovanni, on the other end, provides additional information. “Be careful with Viktor. He's known for being unfaithful to anyone but himself. Don't trust him too much.”

They arrived in the small town late at night. It was bleak, with deserted streets and old buildings on the verge of collapse. In a small bar, they find Viktor sitting in the corner, surrounded by two large men.

Sofia approached him with confidence. “Viktor Mikhailov?”

Viktor turns around, his eyes narrowing when he sees Sofia. “Who's asking?”

“Someone who knows that you want to be free from Andrei's shadow,” Sofia replies in a firm tone.

Viktor chuckled. “Everyone wants to be free of something. But that doesn't mean they can.”

Sofia sat in front of him, ignoring the piercing gazes of her two bodyguards. “We know what Andrei did. We know that he's using you as a pawn in his game. But we also know you're smart enough to take a chance when you see one.”

Viktor looked at him with interest. “And what are you offering?”

Ricardo, who is standing near Sofia, interrupts. “Freedom. You helped us take Andrei down, and we'll ensure you get out of this unscathed.”

The conversation is long, filled with tension and veiled threats. Viktor finally agreed to provide information on one condition: full protection for himself and his family.

“You have a week to prove that you can protect me,” Viktor said before they left. “If not, I'll return to Andrei's side.”

Outside the bar, Sofia lets out a long sigh. “One week. That's not a lot of time.”

Ricardo pats her shoulder. “But it's enough. We just need to make sure there are no mistakes.”

Sofia nodded, even though she knew that this was a very dangerous game.

In the middle of the cold night, she felt the battle against Andrei was getting closer to its climax. But she also knew that the closer they got to the end, the greater the risk they had to face.

At the Moretti villa, Giovanni stood in front of the large windows of his study, looking out into the night. Tension fills the air. Sofia and Ricardo have just reported the results of their negotiations with Viktor Mikhailov. Although it was a step forward, Giovanni knew it was only the beginning.

“A week,” Giovanni muttered, more to himself. “Such a short time to ensure everything goes according to plan.”

“Don,” Alessandra interjects from the corner of the room, ”you know that Viktor won't give us the information we need without being sure of his benefit.”

Giovanni nods, but his gaze remains fixed on the darkness outside. “I know. But I also know that we have no other choice.”

In the same room, Alessandra studied the documents Ricardo had just sent. Among them was a list of Andrei's contacts and distribution channels. However, without specific information from Viktor, the documents were just a puzzle with no clues.

“We must prepare ourselves for possible betrayal,” Alessandra says, her voice cold and firm. “Viktor cannot be trusted.”

Giovanni turned to her, his sharp gaze implying unwavering determination. “That's why I'll send someone to watch his movements. If he tries to play both sides, we'll know.”

“Who do you trust with this task?” Alessandra asked.

“Sofia,” Giovanni replied without hesitation. “She understands the risks best. Besides, Viktor seems to accept her presence more than anyone else.”

Alessandra looked doubtful. “She just came out of a tough battle, Don. Isn't it too risky?”

Giovanni came over and patted Alessandra on the shoulder. “That's precisely why she's the right choice. Sofia knows very well how to survive under pressure.”

When Giovanni conveys the decision to Sofia, she accepts it without protest. Her face remains calm, even though she is raging with emotions inside. She knows this assignment is dangerous and will test her loyalty to Giovanni and her courage.

“Viktor is a smart man,” Giovanni said. “He will try to test your patience. Don't let him see weakness.”

Sofia nodded. “I understand. I'll do what needs to be done.”

Ricardo, who was standing nearby, looked disapproving. “Don, maybe I can go with him. Two heads are better than one.”

Giovanni shook his head. “Your presence will complicate things. Viktor feels more comfortable talking to Sofia. It's his job.”

Ricardo doesn't argue anymore, but it's clear that he doesn't like the decision.

The next day, Sofia meets Viktor at the agreed location, an old warehouse on the edge of town. Viktor looks at her meaningfully, but Sofia keeps her expression cool.

“So, we meet again,” Viktor says, sipping vodka from his small glass.

Sofia wastes no time. “I need information. Tell me now if you can't give it to me, and I won't waste my time anymore.”

Viktor chuckles as if amused by Sofia's boldness. “Relax, Sofia. I'm here to help. But you know, help comes at a price.”

“What do you want?” Sofia asks, her tone firm.

Viktor tilted his head, his eyes narrowed as if he was assessing something. “You have to convince me that I can trust you. Andrei is not someone you can fight half-heartedly.”

Sofia looked at him sharply. “Trust is not just about words, Viktor. You have to decide if you want to live free from Andrei's shadow or die as a pawn in his game.”

Viktor is silent for a moment, then smiles slightly. “You're interesting, Sofia. All right. I'll give you some information, but only enough to prove I'm serious.”

He hands Sofia a small envelope. “Here. A distribution line he uses for weapons. But be careful. If Andrei finds out that you touched this, he won't hesitate to kill you.”

When Sofia returned to the villa and handed the information to Giovanni, Alessandra immediately matched it with the documents they had.

“She's not lying,” Alessandra said finally. “This information matches what we know. But this is only the surface. We need more.”

Giovanni nodded. “And we will get it. But for now, we must ensure that Viktor stays on our side.”

Sofia is relieved but knows that Viktor is a time bomb. If they weren't careful, the whole thing could explode.

At the same time, Ricardo approaches Sofia. “How are you feeling?”

“Fine,” Sofia replied briefly, although she knew it wasn't entirely true.

Ricardo looked at her with concern. “You know I'm here if you need someone to talk to.”

Sofia smiled slightly. “I know. Thank you, Ricardo.”

However, Sofia felt that this burden was hers alone to bear. Amidst the deepening conspiracy, she could only hope that her resolve was strong enough to face what was to come.
