Chapter 19: The First Step
The morning came with a heavier atmosphere than the night before. Sofia woke up with mixed feelings - scared, nervous, and optimistic. The step she was about to take today might be the beginning of the end of her captivity, or it might bring even greater destruction.
Dario, as usual, was already awake. He sits in the corner of the room with a mug of black coffee. His gaze fixed on the door as if every second could bring danger. When Sofia moved, he turned his head.
“Are you ready?” he asked briefly.
Sofia nodded slowly, although she wasn’t sure about that answer.
A few hours later, Sofia stood in the large kitchen where Ricardo usually kept food stocks for his men. Marco was there, his large body almost filling the room. The man stood relaxed, cutting a piece of meat with a large knife that looked more like a weapon than a kitchen tool.
Sofia took a deep breath before stepping inside. She could feel Marco’s gaze boring into her instantly.
“What are you doing here?” Marco asked in a low tone, his voice sounding harsh.
Sofia tried to smile, though her nerves almost made her hands shake. “I’m hungry,” she said quietly.
Marco frowned but didn’t say anything else. He continued his work, ignoring Sofia.
Sofia knew she would miss her chance if she didn’t speak soon. “Marco, I want to ask you something.”
The big man paused momentarily, looking at her with sharp eyes. “What?”
“You’ve been working with Ricardo for quite some time, haven’t you?” Sofia asked, trying to keep her voice calm.
Marco chuckled, sounding more like a growl. “Too long.”
“Have you ever thought about quitting?” Sofia ventured to continue.
Marco looked at her suspiciously. “What do you mean?”
Sofia swallowed, trying to find the right words. “I just thought, someone like you... must have bigger dreams than being Ricardo’s shadow.”
Marco remained silent. Sofia could see something change in his face—a flash of emotion she couldn’t define.
“You don’t know anything about me,” Marco said finally, his voice full of warning.
“True,” Sofia admitted. “But I know what it’s like to be under someone’s control. I know what it’s like to have no freedom.”
Marco put down his knife roughly, his eyes narrowing. “Ricardo saved my life. I’d have been dead long ago if it wasn’t for him.”
“And now you spend your life paying for it,” Sofia countered softly. “But is that enough for you?”
The big man didn’t answer, but Sofia could see that his words were starting to shake him.
When Sofia returned to the room where Dario was waiting for her, her body felt tired, but her mind was spinning fast. She recounts her conversation with Marco, and she remembers every little detail.
“He’s sceptical,” Sofia says confidently. “He probably won’t side with us right away, but I can sense that he’s not completely loyal to Ricardo.”
Dario nodded, a small smile appearing at the corner of his lips. “You’re doing a great job, Sofia.”
Sofia felt a strange warmth in her chest at the compliment. Maybe it was because it was rare for someone to recognize her efforts.
Dario begins to formulate a new plan based on Sofia’s information. They need to deepen their relationship with Marco, learn more about Ricardo, and determine whether there are other people in the group who feel dissatisfied.
However, underneath it all, there is an ever-increasing tension. Sofia knows that their time is running out. Ricardo was the kind of person who wouldn’t let things go without him knowing.
“Are you sure we can do it?” Sofia asked, her voice filled with doubt.
Dario looked at her with a look of conviction. “We have no other choice.”
A Crack in the Darkness
The following days passed with increasingly excruciating pressure. Sofia and Dario grow increasingly wary, realizing that every small step they take could carry significant risks. Sofia continues her attempts to get close to Marco while Dario stays behind the scenes, carefully monitoring every move.
That morning, Sofia finds Marco outside the warehouse where Ricardo’s weapons are stored. He was examining a gun, his large hands skillfully disassembling and reassembling it in seconds.
“You came again,” Marco said without turning around, his voice cold.
Sofia stopped a few steps from where she was standing. “You look busy.”
Marco raised an eyebrow, turning his head briefly to look at her. “And you seem to be asking too many questions. What do you want from me?”
Sofia took a deep breath, trying to formulate words carefully. “I just want to know why you’re still here, Marco. You can leave, even live a better life.”
Marco chuckled, but there was bitterness behind his voice. “A better life? You don’t know what you’re talking about, little lady. In this world, choices are never simple.”
“I know,” Sofia retorted, her voice firmer than before. “But I also know we all have reasons for surviving, even if it makes us suffer.”
Marco watched her for a long time, trying to read her mind. “You talk as if you know everything. But you’re just a prisoner here. What can you teach me?”
“I’m not trying to teach you anything,” Sofia replied. “I just want you to think. If Ricardo finally fell, where would you stand?”
After that conversation, Sofia returned to their room, where Dario was waiting anxiously. He immediately got up when he saw Sofia enter, his face tightening.
“How was it?” he asked.
Sofia sighed, sitting down in the rickety wooden chair. “I think I’m making progress. He didn’t argue that Ricardo might fall.”
Dario nodded slowly as if pondering the information. “We need more time. But I’m sure Marco isn’t the only opening here.”
Sofia looked at him. “What do you mean?”
“I noticed some of Ricardo’s men,” Dario explained. “There’s tension among them. Ricardo leads with fear, and it doesn’t last long. If we can capitalize on their discontent, we might be able to create a schism.”
Sofia nodded despite the worry growing inside her. The plan was full of risks, and if one of them got caught, it would all be over.
That night, Ricardo invited everyone to a large, lavishly decorated room for dinner. The crystal chandelier shone brightly, illuminating the long table of delicious food. Sofia felt her stomach twist as she sat beside Dario, who remained as calm as ever.
Ricardo, with his sly smile, started the conversation. “I hear that you, Sofia, are talking to Marco more and more.”
Sofia felt her heart stop for a moment. Ricardo’s piercing gaze makes her feel like a mouse trapped before a cat.
“He’s friendly,” Sofia replied as quietly as possible, trying to appear calm.
“Friendly, huh?” Ricardo repeated, his smile never leaving his face. “Marco’s not the kind of guy who’s easy to talk to. You must have caught his attention a lot.”
Dario, who had been silent, finally spoke. “Maybe Sofia just has a way of making people feel comfortable.”
Ricardo gave Dario a sharp look but said nothing. The night ended with tension, making Sofia even more convinced that their time was running out.
The next day, Sofia finds herself talking to Marco again, this time in one of the hidden passageways that are rarely passed. She ventured to be more open, hoping to win Marco’s trust.
“Ricardo knows about us talking,” Sofia began, her voice low.
Marco frowned. “He’s not stupid. But that’s not my problem.”
“If he starts to get suspicious, it will be both of our problems,” Sofia countered.
Marco was silent momentarily before finally saying, “What are you trying to do, Sofia? You can’t fight Ricardo. He’s too strong.”
“He may be strong,” Sofia replied. “But he’s not invincible. You know that.”
Marco gave her a long look, and Sofia could see the doubt in his eyes begin to fade, replaced by something more profound: curiosity or perhaps a sense of loyalty that was starting to waver.
