Chapter 222
Chapter 222
Sawyer couldn't believe it, "Come on, don't play games with me. I can't picture Edward, the big shot, doing anything shady."
He had a smug look on his face.
Edward's mouth twitched.
Suddenly, Victoria picked up a silver needle. Sawyer's heart skipped a beat, he nervously cleared his throat, and asked, "Hey, Dr. Neville, what's going on now?"
Victoria calmly shook her head and replied, "Oh, nothing much. Sometimes, you don't need poison for silence. A little silver needle can do the trick too!"
Sawyer was left speechless.
"Now I see. No wonder you two are cut from the same cloth, husband and wife."
Edward raised an eyebrow, ready to speak when his phone interrupted.
Glancing at the caller ID, he promptly ended the call.
Victoria paid no mind, but Sawyer, being nosy, inquired, "Why dodge the call? Debt collector on the line or what?"
He was stirring the pot.
Edward didn't want to engage, but the phone rang again.
He hung up once more, looking irritated.
Initially teasing, Sawyer fell silent seeing Edward's expression.
Victoria turned to look at him.
She was about to ask about the call when Edward hung up again, visibly annoyed, holding back his words.
Sawyer's eyes darted between them.
Tension filled the treatment room.
Just as Sawyer was about to lighten the mood, hurried footsteps approached, and Lila's voice came through the door, "Mr. Hamilton, urgent call from overseas."
"End it," Edward replied coldly.
Lila hesitated, not leaving immediately. After a moment, she whispered, "But the caller sounds upset. What if..."
She left the sentence unfinished.
Edward wheeled himself out without a word.
Victoria watched him go, her hand frozen mid-air. A sudden unease crept over her.
"Quit staring. He's probably downstairs by now. What's staring gonna solve?" Sawyer's words snapped her back to reality.
A hint of embarrassment flickered in Victoria's eyes, but to throw Sawyer off, she put on a serious face and said, "Mr. Cooper, best to keep quiet during acupuncture."
"Can mess with your Qi if you talk too much."
Sawyer rolled his eyes.
"Okay, Dr. Neville, I might not be a genius, but I'm not dumb either, alright?"
"You really think I'd buy that?"
He smirked.
Feeling a tad guilty, Victoria tried to keep her cool, insisting, "I'm looking out for you."
"Sure, all for my benefit."
Sawyer wasn't buying it. "If you hadn't looked so disappointed earlier, I might've almost believed you."
"Don't try to fool me, Dr. Neville. I'm pretty perceptive."
"Curious about the call, huh?" Victoria shot him a cold look.
Sawyer was about to reply when Victoria raised her hand.
He was left speechless.
"I've said it before, sometimes all it takes is a needle to hush someone up."
With that, she shook her head and ignored Sawyer's pleading gaze.
Meanwhile, at the hospital.
Skylar nudged the hesitant Marcus.
"Come on, Marcus Hamilton, didn't we agree you'd let me take care of Mr. Gavin Hamilton? Why the cold feet now?"
Marcus was uncertain.
"Are you really up for looking after Grandpa?"
He had no desire to be at the hospital.
Seeing Gavin only fueled his anger. If Gavin hadn't changed his mind suddenly, Marcus would've been in charge of the Hamilton Group by now.
Skylar was adamant about staying to care for Gavin, and Marcus, enjoying her attention, impulsively agreed. Now, he was having doubts.
Skylar didn't give him a chance to backtrack, "What's with the change of heart? I'm the best at taking care of people."
With a playful look, she teased him.
Marcus felt a flutter but couldn't help muttering, "Smooth talker."
He was torn.
If Skylar could stay and look after Gavin, it would indeed be a good deal for him. He could have Skylar keep tabs on Gavin's moves.
But he had reservations. What if Skylar didn't follow his lead and talked behind his back? That could spell trouble.
"You better promise not to stir up any trouble!"
He cautioned in a hushed tone.
Skylar nodded, "Relax! I'm no fool. If you're good, I'm good. I won't cause you any headaches."
With her reassurance, Marcus eased up.
But as they approached the ward's door, he suddenly halted.
"You..."
Skylar nearly bumped into him, taken aback.
She was about to speak when Marcus covered her mouth and shook his head.
Skylar quieted down and peeked through the door's crack, spotting not only Gavin but also two other middle-aged men in the room.
She recognized them - Gavin's second son, Jasper, and third son, Nathan.
She hesitated and glanced at Marcus, who looked puzzled by what was unfolding inside. He didn't plan to enter but pulled her aside.
Inside the ward.
The father and sons locked eyes in silence for a while.
Finally, Jasper couldn't hold back, "Nathan, I get you're upset, but Dad's doing this for the Hamilton family's sake. You gotta see that."
Nathan pursed his lips.
He knew Gavin's every move was supposedly for the Hamilton family's benefit. Like Jasper, he had always believed Gavin's decisions were justified.
But when it concerned him personally, he saw things differently.
Whether it was for the Hamilton family or any other reason, handing over the Hamilton legacy to Damon or Marcus wouldn't faze him.
But knowing Damon's family was causing harm to his son Edward, and Gavin, who had once been proud of Edward, turned a blind eye, Nathan couldn't stomach it.
Gavin could sense the conflict in Nathan's eyes.
He understood.
Gavin let out a deep sigh, genuinely apologizing, "Nathan, I've failed you as a father. I thought everything I did was for the Hamilton family, but now I see that wrong is wrong. No excuse can justify it."
"Don't feel pressured. I didn't bring Jasper here today to ask anything of you."
