Chapter 217
Chapter 217
Victoria couldn't shake thoughts of Amara from her mind for some reason.
Her curiosity got the best of her, wondering what emotions Amara must have felt while giving birth.
But then, a bitter smile crept onto her face.
What was she even curious about?
Did she still hold onto hope that Amara would be as excited and optimistic about her child as the woman standing before her, maybe even wishing for a daughter?
That kind of thing could happen to anyone, just not Amara.
After all, she didn't hesitate to abandon Elodie back then.
Others couldn't help but sigh upon hearing this, but they kept quiet. Working in obstetrics, they had delivered countless babies and performed numerous surgeries. They had seen all kinds of people.
"This baby is so adorable!" the nurse exclaimed after cleaning and swaddling the baby.
Victoria leaned in for a closer look.
Most newborns were usually red and wrinkled, not exactly cute.
They had encountered a mother in the ward before who refused to acknowledge her newborn because she thought the baby was too ugly.
But this baby was rosy and delicate.
As Victoria glanced over, the baby seemed to sense her presence and opened his eyes.
His bright eyes seemed to hold a knowing gaze. He stared at her without blinking or even offering a smile.
This moment left not only Victoria but everyone else in awe.
"Dr. Neville, looks like this little one has taken a shine to you!"
"Could it be that Dr. Neville was his sweetheart in a past life? The way he's looking at her, it's getting more affectionate by the minute."
Victoria chuckled and shook her head, "Okay, enough with the jokes."
At that moment, she was amazed by how different this baby was, considering most babies kept their eyes shut for a while after birth. She never would have guessed that this baby would have significant ties to her in the future.
The other doctors had surgeries to attend to, so the nurse took the baby to the observation room.
Victoria stepped out first, and the family members gathered around her.
"Doctor, is my wife okay?"
"Doctor..."
Victoria wasn't a fan of being surrounded, but sensing the family's worry, she pushed herself to stay composed, "Don't worry! Both mother and baby are doing well. The baby is being observed now, and the mother will be out soon. You can wait here and then head back to the ward together."
The middle-aged man blinked, not saying a word.
Victoria found it odd. Wasn't he just very anxious a moment ago?
Then she overheard the boy next to him mutter, "Another boy?"
"My mom is going to be so mad."
The boy appeared to be in his teens, with a maturity beyond his years, giving Victoria a sense of familiarity.
But upon second thought, it wasn't surprising to find him familiar. The boy actually bore a striking resemblance to the mother, so he must be her son.
Having such a grown son, it's no wonder they were hoping for a daughter.
Perhaps due to the presence of others, the man shot his son a look, "Don't talk nonsense, your mom is the sweetest."
After that, he turned to Victoria, intending to explain, but then noticed the wound on her arm.
The wound, though only superficially treated, looked somewhat fierce.
The man hesitated, then blurted out, "Doctor, did my wife bite you?"
Victoria wasn't bothered by it. She shrugged her arm and calmly replied, "Yes, it's all good. When the patient was brought in, she was a bit out of it, and she's allergic to many meds. I didn't want to risk giving her any meds, fearing she might harm herself, so I reached out."
"Don't worry, she's all good."
Everyone present felt a bit uneasy.
The man then took a closer look at Victoria, and to his surprise, she turned out to be the woman he had seen at the Hamilton Manor party the day before.
"Victoria?"
He blurted out her name.
Victoria was taken aback, and the man quickly pointed to her nametag, "Dr. Neville, thank you."
Victoria nodded and said, "You're welcome."
As she walked away, the man's son couldn't help muttering, "Weird, why does this Dr. Neville seem so familiar?"
"It must be fate," the man said.
He wasn't surprised by his son's comment. He also felt a connection. Upon closer inspection, Victoria did bear a resemblance to their family.
But it was probably just a coincidence!
Unaware of the thoughts of the mother's family, Victoria returned to the department and was called over by Terry, who had rushed back.
She felt a bit nervous.
After all, she was still an intern, and according to hospital rules, what she did just now was not allowed.
So, even before Terry could speak, she took the initiative, "I'm sorry, Dr. Perez, I shouldn't have taken matters into my own hands..."
"What are you talking about?" Terry interrupted her, "When I called you in earlier, you were sweating bullets. I thought you were tired, but it turns out you were just startled."
"Our hospital is not unreasonable. I heard about what happened just now, and you did well, Dr. Neville."
Terry's praise was genuine.
Victoria blinked, momentarily incredulous.
Terry smiled and said, "Actually, if we're being serious, I underestimated your abilities. You should have been promoted a long time ago."
"I hope it's not too late now."
After saying that, Terry winked at Victoria.
The mischievous look on Terry's typically serious face was quite amusing.
But Victoria couldn't find it in herself to laugh.
She blinked in disbelief, "What did you just say?"
Terry cleared his throat, extended his hand, and said solemnly, "Congratulations on your promotion, Dr. Neville."
Victoria couldn't believe it. Overwhelmed, she couldn't hold back her tears. "Thank you, Dr. Perez."
She knew that despite her good performance that day, Terry's backing was essential for her promotion.
Terry returned to his serious demeanor, "Alright, Dr. Neville, you're officially a doctor now. Crying won't do."
"I get it. I'll definitely take notes from you in the future," Victoria promised in a slightly choked voice.
Terry furrowed his brow, gazing at Victoria, then sighed, "Never mind, never mind. You young folks, be lively, don't pick up my old ways. My outdated style doesn't match your pretty face."
Victoria couldn't help but smile through her tears, "You're not old-fashioned at all! You're the best."
She genuinely found Terry to be an intriguing individual.
Terry seemed about to reply but ended up shaking his head, "Alright, get back to work!"
In some ways, this student of his was a bit old-fashioned. Yet, even traditional folks could have a sense of humor.
Victoria had expected to feel tired the next day after the excitement of the previous night. However, the news of her promotion filled her with such joy that fatigue eluded her.
Unfortunately, this newfound happiness was short-lived as she neared the end of her shift.
