Chapter 123 Flashbacks
Chapter 123 Flashbacks
Sparkle
Both James and I sat in the backseat of Mr. Walter’s truck while he and his wife took the front seat. The couple seemed to be having a jolly good time while I tried my best to maintain as little contact as possible with James. I know I have lost my memories and should get help, but the problem here is that I trust my instincts more than I trust what anyone says.
I have drawn three possible reasons for my indifference towards James: The first reason could be that he’s lying about our relationship, but I doubt any man will lie about being the husband of a pregnant woman, so maybe I would have to rule out that option. That then leads me to the second option: that we’re an estranged couple and he’s using this as an opportunity to get back with me.
But if I’m wrong about the two, then I’m definitely right about this being an alpine divorce situation. Maybe he planned to abandon me and regretted it along the line so he came back to look for me. Whatever the answer may be, there’s something fishy about this situation.
He tried to reach for my hand, but I moved it away from him. He then gave me the most pitiful look ever, which made me feel bad for him, but not bad enough to make me warm up to him.
By the time we reached the nearest Motel in town, it was about 8:00 in the evening. I was exhausted, my bladder was bursting, and my baby was kicking me from the inside, probably because it was also tired from that long, bumpy ride.
“It was nice having you around, Sparkle. We will stay in touch.” Mr. Walter said.
“Thank you guys so much for everything,” I said.
“It was a pleasure having you. We will miss you.” Majorie added, as we said our tearful goodbyes. When they left, I stood at the front of the motel with a bag Majorie had given me containing a few comfortable clothes and some toiletries.
James stared at me as I did the same. I was searching my heart to find if there were any feelings for him, but unfortunately, all I could find were suspicions and discomfort.
“Let’s go inside. I will book the rooms. Tomorrow, I will try and reach out to our people so they can come pick us up.” He said.
“I’m sorry, but you’re still a stranger to me, and I do not want to spend the night in the same room with you.” I firmly replied.
I thought he would protest, but instead, he nodded his head and readily agreed to my separate rooms request.
“If that makes you safe, why not?”
So he got us two rooms, and I immediately checked into mine and locked my door. I leaned my back against the door and melted and sighed heavily, wondering what I was going to do next. Where do I go from here? Maybe I could check out in the middle of the night and escape the clutches of this strange man, but even if I leave, where am I going?
I went into the bathroom to clean up a little, and as I took off my clothes, I noticed the hair all over my body. It wasn’t normal hair; it looked like fur and felt like fur too. My heart raced as I noticed the fur creeping down my arm to my fingers. So it wasn’t a dream after all; my body could shift.
This is crazy! What am I going to do now? What is James going to think if he discovers that I’m both an animal and a human in one body?
How do I stop this? Oh my god, how do I fix this? As I was panicking in the bathroom, I heard some gentle taps on my door.
“Who’s there?” I asked with my voice trembling.
“It’s James. I got you some towels and some food.”
I looked around the bathroom and discovered that there were no towels available, which wasn’t a surprise because it was a cheap motel after all. I quickly put my dress back on and hid my right hand behind me to hide my furry hand.
I opened the door, and he immediately handed me a grocery bag and a food pack. “I know you don’t eat meat, but there were no vegan-friendly dishes available, so I settled for some vegetable noodles and some seafood on the side, in case you want some animal protein.”
I smiled and took the package with my left hand. “Thank you.”
“Any time. Call me if you need anything else.” I nodded and closed the door. I dropped everything and rushed to the bathroom, panicking about the fur growing on my arm and rapidly moving to the other half of my body. I wish there were someone I could ask for help. What am I supposed to do now?
I shut my eyes tightly and clenched the insides of my body. When I opened my eyes a few seconds later, the fur had disappeared. Isn’t it crazy? Isn’t all of this crazy?
I stepped into the shower and had a warm shower. After my shower, I sat down to have my dinner. As I savored every bit of it, I wondered why I was vegan; it didn’t feel like I abhorred meat at all.
“You will never get pregnant. Just leave my son, you witch!” The voice of an older woman rang through my head. I clutched my head in pain as I wondered whose voice that was.
I started having flashbacks of myself having a verbal exchange with an older woman,
“Damien, talk to your mother, or else she will be the end of this marriage.” I heard myself saying.
Wait! Who is Damien? And why was I fighting with his mother? Are these my memories coming back to me? I stopped eating and stepped out of my room. I knocked vigorously on James’s door, and he came to the door with a confused look.
“Is everything okay?”
“Was I married before?”
He looked confused, then he nodded, “Yes, you were, but I can’t help you with many details of your past because you preferred not to talk about it, and I never pushed you to know more.” James replied.
Again, I couldn’t tell if I could trust this guy; he definitely wasn’t telling me something I needed to know.
“At least I told you the reason for my divorce; if we’re engaged, then you should know something.”
“You weren’t getting pregnant, and that’s what ended the marriage.” He said.
Oh, so he knew why the marriage ended but didn’t want to tell me. What else does he know that he’s keeping away from me?
“Are your memories coming back?” He eagerly asked.
“I think so. Tell me, James, whose baby is in my belly? Is it for my ex-husband then?”
He fumbled and bit his lips, “Your marriage already fell apart because of infertility…”
“James, tell me, or I will just get a DNA once I deliver.”
“Yes, it’s his baby.” James boldly replied, which left me even more confused.
