Blood and Vows

The cityscape blurred as Lucian and Evelyn moved through the abandoned streets, their steps soundless despite their urgency. The battle with the hunter had left them both wounded, but there was no time to stop.

Lucian's grip on Evelyn's wrist remained firm, his own body tense with barely restrained aggression. His wound still bled, the silver-laced cut slowing his healing. Evelyn could feel his pain through the bond, a dull ache settling deep within her own chest.

They finally stopped in a darkened alleyway, pressed between towering buildings. The air was thick with the scent of rain and blood. Lucian leaned against the wall, breathing heavily.

"Let me see," Evelyn whispered, stepping closer.

Lucian shook his head. "It'll heal."

She didn't believe him. "Not if it's laced with silver."

A flicker of reluctance crossed his crimson eyes, but he didn't resist when she pushed aside his torn shirt. The wound was deep, the edges inflamed. Evelyn traced her fingers along the cut, a strange sensation building within her.

Lucian tensed. "Evelyn-"

"I can feel it," she interrupted. "The bond. It's trying to... do something."

A warmth spread through her fingertips, an instinct she didn't fully understand urging her forward. Without thinking, she pressed her palm over the wound. A rush of heat surged through her veins, then through him.

Lucian let out a sharp breath, his body stiffening. The wound beneath her palm began to close, the pain in her chest fading along with it.

When she pulled back, the cut was gone. Only a faint scar remained.

Lucian stared at her. "You healed me."

Evelyn blinked. "I... I didn't know I could."

A silence stretched between them, charged with something neither of them could name. Then, Lucian reached out, his fingers brushing against her cheek.

"You're changing," he murmured.

Evelyn shivered under his touch. "Because of the bond?"

Lucian's gaze darkened. "Because you're mine."

His voice was possessive, raw with an emotion she wasn't ready to name. But before she could respond, a distant sound shattered the moment-footsteps, fast and approaching.

Evelyn turned toward the noise, her senses sharpening. More hunters.

Lucian's expression hardened. "We need to move."

This wasn't over. If anything, it was only the beginning.

Evelyn's breath came fast, her mind still reeling from what had just happened. She had healed Lucian. She had felt his pain as if it were her own, and then, just like that, she had willed it away. The bond was growing stronger, weaving them together in ways she was only beginning to understand.

But there was no time to dwell on it. The approaching footsteps sent a sharp thrill of adrenaline through her veins.

Lucian pulled her against him, his body tense. "They're tracking us."

Evelyn didn't need to ask who they were. The hunters. They had already fought one, but where there was one, there were always more.

Lucian's crimson eyes glowed in the darkness. "We run, or we fight."

She swallowed hard, her pulse racing. "We fight."

A slow, dangerous smile curved Lucian's lips. "Good girl."

The moment stretched, the air thick with anticipation. Then, the hunters rounded the corner, shadows moving swiftly against the dim streetlights.

Evelyn barely had time to react before Lucian lunged.

He was a blur of movement, faster than human eyes could follow. The first hunter barely had time to raise his weapon before Lucian's claws tore through his throat, blood spraying in an arc of crimson.

Evelyn didn't hesitate. Something inside her, something dark and primal, awakened. She moved before she could think, her body reacting on instinct. The second hunter raised a silver blade, but she dodged it easily, faster than she should have been.

Her vision sharpened. Every sound, every heartbeat around her, pulsed in her ears. Her hands moved, striking with deadly precision. Before she knew it, the second hunter was on the ground, motionless.

She stared down at her hands, chest rising and falling rapidly. This wasn't just the bond. This was something more.

Lucian stepped beside her, his gaze heavy with something unreadable.

"You're changing," he murmured again, his voice tinged with something like pride.

Evelyn looked up at him, heart hammering. "What am I becoming?"

Lucian reached out, brushing his fingers against her cheek, his touch lingering.

"Mine."

The word sent a shiver down her spine, but before she could respond, a new sound

Before Evelyn could respond, a new sound pierced the night-a slow, deliberate clap.

She whirled around, her heightened senses locking onto the figure stepping out of the shadows. A tall man, dressed in a dark trench coat, with silver hair that glowed under the streetlights. His presence sent a chill down her spine, but it wasn't fear. It was something else-something ancient, something dangerous.

Lucian stiffened beside her. His hand instinctively moved to her waist, a protective gesture that didn't go unnoticed by their observer.

"Well, well," the man mused, his voice smooth as silk. "The prodigal prince and his dhampir princess."

Evelyn's breath caught. He knew.

Lucian's grip on her tightened. "Who are you?"

The man smiled, his fangs glinting as he took a slow step forward. "You don't recognize me? I suppose time does change things." His gaze flickered to Evelyn, his eyes gleaming with something unreadable. "But you, little dhampir... you are a marvel."

Evelyn's muscles coiled, ready to fight, but Lucian subtly pressed against her, a silent command to stay still.

"I won't ask again," Lucian growled. "Who are you?"

The man tilted his head, amused. "Oh, but you already know the answer." He spread his arms as if welcoming an old friend. "You feel it, don't you? The bond between us, the connection of blood."

Evelyn's stomach dropped.

Lucian went rigid.

The man's smile widened. "I am Rafael Devereaux. And I am your brother."

Silence crashed over them like a tidal wave.

Evelyn's mind reeled. Brother? That was impossible. Lucian had never mentioned a sibling-never spoken of any living family.

Lucian's expression remained unreadable, but Evelyn could feel the storm raging beneath his skin.

"You're lying," Lucian finally said, voice like steel.

Rafael chuckled, shaking his head. "Am I?" He took another step forward, and Evelyn caught the scent of something-blood, old and powerful, laced with something unnatural. "Tell me, brother, have you never wondered why you are different? Why your power surpasses that of our kind?"

Lucian's jaw clenched, his fangs bared. "Enough."

But Rafael wasn't finished.

His gaze slid to Evelyn, and a slow smirk curved his lips. "And you... You have no idea what
