Chapter 110
Lillian
My eyes searched through the crowd of people till I finally caught sight of Officer Bellick. He was the one in charge of bringing Zayden to court.
Looks like the whole world had come to witness how my husband would be sentenced to life imprisonment.
People were pathetic.
During the time he was just Zayden the eldest son of Malo Kent, everyone respected him. The richest and almighty Zayden Kent.
They all bowed their heads if he stepped into a building. They all gave him that respect; some even feared him.
But the moment everything crashed, they all turned their heads away. People of this age and time want influential people, and the moment you fall, they'll all disappear, no matter how much good you have done.
I squeezed myself through the dozens of people to get to Officer Bellick; I needed to see Zayden before the trial began.
" Officer Bellick," I called as soon as I got close to his hearing range. He turned swiftly to search over the crowd.
I finally got closer to him, trying to catch my breath." Thank goodness, I thought it would be hard to find you."
He turned to face me." Mrs Kent, you should be getting yourself seated."
" I know, I just wanted to ask a favour." I jammed my hands together.
This man was super uptight ,and not even a million gold could bribe him, so the best I could use was my feminine charm.
He sighed." I hope it's not what I think it is."
I pleaded." Please, you know I won't be allowed to see him again till he's transferred to Fox River if he is found guilty. So I'm begging you, I just need five minutes."
He shook his head." Mrs Kent, the trial is about to start. I have a duty to carry out, and I can't cut corners, not even for you."
My shoulders sagged. If there were a hundred police officers dedicated to their jobs just like this man, then I think this world would be a better place with less corruption.
" Please, I'm begging you. I just want to have five minutes with him without any restraint on him. This might be the last time I get to hold his hand. I'm begging you, I need this one favour." I let one tear slip out of my eyelids.
It wasn't fake because I was speaking the truth.
I had done a little research, and in Fox River Prison, once a person gets jailed to life imprisonment, especially for murder, visitation hours were only once a week for 15 minutes, and there is no physical contact during that time.
Imagining it alone was too painful so this was my last chance.
He stared at me, a blank expression on his face, and then he sighed; at one point, I thought he had given in until his next words hit me.
"Lillian. I've been in this line of field for 15 years and not once have I gone against my ethics. I can't bend the rules for you; if he's found guilty, then accept it and wait till you get a chance to see him." He spoke ,his voice even.
Now, my lacrimal glands leaked on their own. I quickly reached for my napkin and wiped the tears off my cheeks.
" Please, I'm begging you. Just five minutes."
He shook his head." The trial is about to start, you are hindering me from doing my job."
My shoulders sagged in defeat.
" Yeah, I'm sorry," I spoke, my voice was low.
I finally gave up and turned to leave, accepting that things might not go the way I wanted them to.
I had walked only three steps when he called me back.
He looked like he was fighting within himself." Look, I'm doing this because your husband had also requested to see you, but I refused him. You have only five minutes to do whatever you want." He said and asked me to follow him.
I whispered numerous thank you as I walked behind him, my chest feeling heavy as I sniffed the snort that had clouded my nostrils.
I had been crying more often, mostly because I felt fed up and unable to do anything to help Zayden's situation.
I had looked into his father all on my own. From a newspaper that was dated nine years ago and articles that were also written about his parents during that time. So far, there were interesting stories and suspicious articles and scandals that didn't add up but none could help the case except if substantial evidence was found.
I told Oliver about my findings and he said he would take it from there. I don't know what he has been doing since but he has always been behind a computer with Zayden's lawyer, either typing or printing out pictures or trying to fix puzzles.
My house turned into a camping ground for all of us as we all found solace in each other's presence. Noah helped with the cooking as I didn't have the strength and heart to do it.
Just last night, the atmosphere was depressed. None of us could sleep, each thinking about how today will turn out.
Only Jade understood the weight I carried. It's my first time being a mother so raising a child alone wouldn't be easy.
I was led through a row of stairs till we came across an office. Bellick opened the door and I stepped in.
Zayden was sitting on one of the couches, his hands in handcuffs. He lifted his eyes up the moment the door opened.
I didn't wait for the officers to give us some privacy and just ran over to him, wrapping my hands around his shoulders.
He couldn't hug me back, because his hands were restrained.
I burst into another round of tears."God, Zayden."
He kissed my neck and then went for my lips. I kissed him with the same Intensity.
"I want you to know that I love you, I always will."
His Adam's apple bopped up and down." Don't make it sound like this is goodbye. At least I'm not dying."
I released a bitter laugh, connecting my forehead with his , I grazed the muscles on his face with my fingers.
" No matter what happens, I'll wait. I promise I'll wait for you." I choked out.
His eyes brimmed with various emotions." Have I ever told you that you're the best thing that ever happened to me?"
I chuckled and he placed a kiss on my temple." It's till death does us part." I whispered.
He smiled." Yeah, and I'm not dying anytime soon."
We remained like that for a few more seconds, savouring the moment. I used to see scenes like this in movies, it was very painful to watch but even more painful to be experiencing it in real life.
The weight of the impending sentence weighed us down like an anchor.
There's no way out of this one, this might actually be the last time I get to hold him like this.
