Chapter 70 Back To Being His Enemy
Evelyn’s POV
“Lucifer.” Diego lowered his head before Lorenzo could even reach us. His posture shifted from human to soldier in half a second, chin down, shoulders firm with much respect.
Lorenzo stopped at the end of the long corridor, his eyes burning with a fury that was too sharp to be casual. The anger rolling off him was thick. Alive. Heavy enough that I felt it press against my chest.
He stopped right in front of us. His jaw flexed once. His eyes didn’t touch Diego, not even for a second. They were locked on me.
“What,” he said slowly, and darkly, “are you two discussing?”
Diego opened his mouth, but it was a messy mistake.
Lorenzo didn’t even glance at him. “Get the fuck out of here.”
Diego bowed instantly, gave me a quick, apologetic look, and disappeared down the hall like his life depended on it.
Now it was just me, and him standing inches away. The silence swallowed me first, then his voice followed.
“What did he tell you?” Lorenzo asked with a tone that was too calm . “About me, right?”
I swallowed hard. “Um…..”
“So you now go around asking my men about my life. My history?” He stepped closer. His breath brushed my cheek. “What do you intend to achieve with all this, Eve? Why the sudden interest in things that have to do with me……? Answer me.”
My throat tightened. “I just…..”
“How did you go,” he cut in without letting me finish, his voice lowering into something rough and offended, “from hating me so much to suddenly becoming interested in who I am and what I am?”
Anger, hurt, disappointment, they were all fighting in his eyes. But he kept his expression hard and cold.
“What happened to the murderer you used to call me?” he asked.
A shiver ran through me. Not from fear…..okay, maybe a little, but mostly because he was close enough that I could feel the tension vibrating off his skin.
I forced myself to breathe. To be brave even though my heart felt too heavy.
“I’m not trying to forget what you did,” I said, my voice steady even though my palms were sweating. “I know you killed my family. I know that. I haven’t erased it.”
He didn’t blink.
“But,” I continued softly, “I found myself wanting to save you.”
That broke him.
In one movement, he caged me with his body, one fist by my head, the other braced on the other side, trapping me between him and the cold wall.
His chest nearly touched mine. His breathing was hot against my face. His eyes were burning straight into me.
“Saving me?” he asked through clenched teeth. “Saving me from what, Evelyn?”
His body towered over me, shadowing me completely.
“I don’t know,” I whispered.
His lip curled into a cruel and humorless smile. “Pathetic lie.”
My breath hitched.
“There is nothing to save me from and you know that,” he continued, leaning even closer until his forehead almost brushed mine. “You’re only trying to manipulate me. Getting into my head. Trying to soften me so you can escape.”
“That’s not…..” I dragged out the words.
“Keep quiet.” His voice dropped into something darker. “I know your kind of lies, Eve. I’ve lived longer than your generations. I’ve seen every trick. And you…..” His eyes dragged slowly down my face. “You’re not smart enough to fool me.”
My chest felt tight, but not from fear, he was twisting my words into something ugly. Something I didn’t mean.
“That’s not true, I was only looking out for you.” I whispered.
“Really?” he asked, tilting his head. “Then why did it look like you just couldn’t wait for me to leave the house entirely before you went to flirt with Diego.”
My eyes widened. “What? I wasn’t…..”
“Oh, please. If I hadn’t forgotten my phone,” he snapped, “I’m sure I would have walked in on something worse between you two.”
My jaw dropped. Anger snapped through me so fast I didn’t think or plan. Then I slapped him hard, not minding the consequences.
The sound cracked through the hallway.
For a moment, everything went still.
Lorenzo’s head was slightly turned from the force of it. His jaw was clenched so tightly I could hear the tension. A small line of blood slid down his bottom lip.
He looked back at me.
Then wiped the blood with his thumb. And when he looked at it, something inside him snapped cleanly.
His eyes lifted to mine furiously and then he grabbed my jaw with one hand, pulled me to him and crushed his mouth against mine.
It wasn’t a kiss, it was a force, a storm. A punishment and a confession tangled together.
I gasped trying to pull away, but he swallowed it, pressing closer, pushing me harder against the wall. His hand slid to the back of my neck, holding me still like he needed to anchor himself to something or break apart entirely.
His lips were rough with much anger and his breath was hot on me. Trembling with emotion that he didn’t want to feel.
I tried to push him again, but my hands ended up curling into his shirt instead, grabbing him because the closeness was too much and not enough at the same time.
Just when it feels like I was about to enjoy it way more than I should, he pulled back a little, his forehead pressed against mine, his breath shaking.
Our eyes kept glued with each other without the intention of breaking apart.
Finally he spoke first. This time his voice sounded more broken and furious all at once.
“Don’t ever in your fucking life,” he whispered, “dream of slapping me in your life again.”
I swallowed breathlessly. “Then don’t accuse me of things I didn’t do.”
His fingers tightened slightly on my jaw. “Oh, yeah. That will only happen when you stop flirting with different men and stick to the rules of the contract."
“I don’t give a fuck about your stupid rules,” I said, my breaths still heavy.
I shook my head, anger coiling inside me. “You know what?” My fingers pointed on the floor, firmly. “Let’s just pretend that all this never happened. From confessing my feelings to you, then sucking your fucking Dick just to make you feel fine.”
I dragged my fingers on my hair, twisting it too hard. I paced around a little as Lorenzo’s gaze moved with me.
“Let’s just go back to being two sworn enemies and erase the fact that I ever demanded that you let me into your heart.”
That twisted something in his heart, but he masked it immediately.
“You can continue wailing and waiting for your past lover, I don’t give a fuck anymore!” I shot back and twisted myself, making an attempt to walk out on him, but his grip cut me quickly.
