Chapter 506 Thy Will Follow
Chapter 506 Thy Will Follow
(Caelum Ashborne)
Adelaide didn't move. She didn't breathe. She stared at him, her eyes fixed upon his face with an intensity that almost frightened him.
"No."
The word escaped her as little more than air.
"No..."
She shook her head slowly, almost absently, as though the movement might somehow rearrange the world back into something recognisable.
"...you're confused."
The sentence sounded fragile even to her own ears.
"You've..." She swallowed. "You've misunderstood something."
Cael closed his eyes. "I haven't."
"No." She shook her head again, more firmly this time.
"No, because..." Her breathing had begun to shorten. "Because none of that makes sense."
She laughed. A tiny, broken sound.
"You cried."
His heart lurched.
"When Apollo..." Her voice faltered before she forced herself onward. "When he..." She looked away for only a heartbeat. "...when he hurt me..." She looked back at him. "...you cried."
The memory struck him with unbearable clarity. He remembered every second. The helplessness. The rage. The shame.
"I did."
"You held me afterwards."
"I did."
"You taught me to fight."
"Yes."
"You showed me your Emberflame."
"Yes."
"You trusted me with it."
"I did."
"You let me free you."
"I did."
Her voice became almost desperate now, each question arriving faster than the last, as though if she reached the right one everything would suddenly make sense again.
"You stood between me and Apollo."
"Yes."
"You nearly died for me."
"Yes."
"You carried me."
"Yes."
"You stayed with me when my wings came."
"Yes."
"You..."
She stopped. Her lips trembled.
"...you loved me."
Silence. Cael didn't hesitate.
"I do."
The answer landed so gently it somehow hurt even more.
"I loved you then. I love you now. I will love you long after you hate me."
The tears she'd been holding back finally spilled over.
"But..." She looked utterly lost. "...if you loved me..." The question broke apart before it reached its end. "...why?"
Gods... There it was. Not who are you? Not how could you?
Simply... Why?
Cael's shoulders sagged beneath a weight he had carried for nine centuries.
"Because when I first walked into your life..." His voice was scarcely audible. "...I was following my father's orders."
He looked down at his own hands. His breathing grew uneven.
"I kept telling myself every kindness served the mission."
A hollow laugh escaped him.
"Then one day..." He looked back at her. "...I realised I couldn't remember where the mission ended..." His voice cracked. "...and where loving you began."
Adelaide stared at him. Her tears continued falling silently, but something inside her expression had changed. The confusion remained. The grief remained.
But now... For the very first time... Doubt appeared.
Not doubt about what he had said. Doubt about everything she remembered.
She looked past him. Not because she wished to leave. Because she could suddenly see every moment they had shared unfolding again inside her mind.
Every memory now carried two versions of itself. The one she had lived. And the one he had just described.
She wrapped both arms around herself as though the room had suddenly become cold.
"When..." Her voice barely existed. "...when did you stop pretending?"
Cael didn't answer immediately because there was only one honest answer.
He met her eyes.
"I don't know."
A tear slipped down his own face.
"And that's the worst part."
His voice broke completely.
"I don't know which smile was the first real one. I don't know which touch stopped belonging to my mission. I don't know when I stopped following orders..." His breathing shook. "...and started following my heart."
He smiled then, not with happiness.
With complete devastation.
"I only know..." He looked at her as though memorising her for the last time. "...that somewhere along the way..." His voice failed. "...you became more important than everything my father had ever asked of me."
Silence swallowed the chamber.
Neither of them moved. Neither of them knew how. Because the truth hadn't simply broken their future, it had reached backwards through every memory they possessed and asked both of them the same impossible question.
How much of us was real?
Neither of them spoke. The silence stretched until it became almost unbearable, broken only by the uneven rhythm of Adelaide's breathing.
Cael couldn't leave it like this.
He took one hesitant step forward. Not enough to crowd her. Just enough that, had she wished, she could still have reached for him. His hand rose almost of its own accord. The same hand that had brushed tears from her cheeks beneath the crystal caverns. The same hand that had held hers across battlefields and burning forests. The same hand that had promised, without words, that she would never face Hell alone. His fingertips drifted towards her face.
Adelaide flinched. Not dramatically. She just stepped back before he could touch her.
Though her retreat was slight, it shattered him. The distance between them became a chasm, wide as the void between stars, and he felt himself falling.
His hand remained suspended between them for a long, empty heartbeat before slowly falling back to his side.
"I..." His voice had almost disappeared. "I'm so sorry, Firelight."
She couldn't look at him. She wrapped her arms tightly around herself, staring instead at the pale volcanic floor beneath her bare feet as though it might somehow steady a world that no longer felt real.
When she finally spoke, her voice was quiet enough that he almost missed it.
"I think..." She swallowed. "...I need you to leave."
Every part of him wanted to beg. To explain more. To ask her not to decide yet. Instead... He bowed his head.
"I understand."
He turned towards the shadows gathered quietly along the far wall. Then stopped. There was one truth he refused to leave unsaid.
He looked back at her. She still hadn't raised her eyes.
"My father believes I belong to him."
His voice was calm now. Steady.
"As Apollo once believed I belonged to him."
He shook his head slowly.
"They're both wrong."
At last, Adelaide looked up. His amber eyes met hers.
"There is only one person in all the realms to whom I now choose to give my loyalty."
He placed one fist over his heart.
"You."
The single word echoed softly through the chamber.
"My oath is yours. My life is yours. My flame is yours."
He drew one slow breath.
"I have broken every promise I ever made you except one."
His voice softened.
"I told you that if you asked, I would follow."
A sad smile touched his lips.
"I still will."
Whatever she wished. Whatever punishment she believed he deserved. Whatever future she chose. He would accept it.
"If you command me to leave this palace... I will go. If you command me to kneel before Apollo... I will kneel. If you decide my life is the price of my betrayal...” He didn't hesitate. "I will give it willingly."
His eyes never left hers.
"Not because I seek forgiveness."
A tear slipped silently down his face.
"But because I belong nowhere else but by your side."
The room fell silent once more. Adelaide said nothing. She couldn't. There were too many shattered pieces lying between them for words to reach across.
Cael gave the smallest inclination of his head.
Not to a Queen. But to the woman he loved.
Then the shadows rose around him once more. For a heartbeat they swallowed the outline of his body.
When they fell still again... He was gone.
Adelaide stood unmoving, alone in the hush that pressed in from every shadow. Silence wrapped her like a shroud, and she wondered if the love that had burned so fiercely between them had ever been real, or if it was merely the most exquisite lie Hell had ever whispered into the world.
