Chapter 411: A place to live

Chapter 411: A place to live

Thalia's thoughts were interrupted by the voice she thought she would never hear again.

“Welcome, Luna.” Adam said, but his gaze wasn't friendly.

“What are you...? How...? I heard your bones breaking!”

“You heard 'bones breaking'. They weren't my bones.”

“No?”

“I didn't know werewolves could be so foolish. Some of them offered their lives so that my life would be spared.”

“They did? Why didn't you come back?”

“Yes. They did, but to keep mine and...” Adam interrupted himself. “Well, the Firecolds demanded five lives. I don't consider mine to be that valuable.”

“I understand, but you asked again: Why didn't you come back?”

Adam looked away.

“Because Baron offered me you.”

“Baron?”

“The leader of the Firecolds.”

“Are you close to him now? You even know the name of that... 'thing'!”

Adam looked at her as if assessing whether he could tell the whole truth and took a deep breath.

“You and I and the whole Lens family have always been close to him.”

“I don't understand.”

“You'll understand. One day. What you need to know now is that Baron 'needed' something that he would never get from my presence in the Shelter. So he offered me something too tempting for me to resist and refuse.”

“How did he know exactly what you wanted?”

“That's part of what you'll understand over time.”

Thalia shook her head.

“You're a traitor. You abandoned your people and allied yourself with the monsters.”

Did I do that? Did my absence harm our people? No, Thalia. But my feelings for you were shaking the werewolves' confidence in Ian's leadership.”

“So you came to this paradise and left your people to suffer in hell because you love your son too much?”

“Do you think it's like paradise here? Tell me, Thalia. What is your plan to rescue all your people and bring them to this place, where they will be safe?”

“I'm going to kill the leader of the disgusting people.”

“Don't talk about them like that.”

“Are you offended too? I call them by what they represent in my life. Did you know they killed my son? Your grandson?”

“Just as you can't see what happens here, I can't see what happens there either! What do you think I am? God?” Adam said impatiently.

Thalia glared at him.

“You can see through eyes...”

“That ended with the magic of the Blue Moon.”

Thalia turned her back to him and, her hand trembling, poured herself a cup of coffee.

“Your choice was in vain. I'm not staying with you. I am your son's Luna.”

“You can resist. I won't force you to stay with me. But you'd better come to terms with it, Thalia, and admit to yourself that along with all Luna's power, Naya has transferred to you all the overwhelming, devastating love she feels for me. Love that you've been fighting against since the first time you entered my house.”

“I'm not going to discuss this with you, Adam. Tomorrow, when Firecold comes after my answer, I'll follow up with him.”

“All right. But I think I should warn you. For anyone who isn't Lens, or a Firecold, you can only come here once. If you leave, you won't be able to regret it later and come back. And going with him, you'll discover something else devastating. There's nothing left in the world. And you'll never feel the warmth of love in your life again.” Adam said and left.

The night came quickly and Adam never approached Thalia again. She walked around the house and discovered that there were five bedrooms, three of them without any furniture. Thalia found Adam's room, deducing that it was his bedroom, given the presence of the double bed with clothes strewn on top of it and some personal belongings. She chose the other room, which only had an iron bed, like the ones Ryan had put up in the Shelter. She lay down and slept. For the first time since her son had been ripped from her womb, she didn't have nightmares and woke up in a good mood.

She could live happily there. With Adam. But she could never forget the people left behind. Adam walked down the road, without tasting the coffee she had made and when it was afternoon, she ate an apple to replace her lunch and through the window she saw Adam coming back with some wood in his arms. Before he reached the house, Thalia went outside to greet him and met Firecold.

“Are you ready to live with your choice, Luna?”

Thalia looked at Adam, who had let the firewood fall from his arms and was staring anxiously at her and Firecold without coming any closer.

There was an appeal in Adam's eyes. A plea she couldn't ignore. Never again.
