Chapter 31 The shattered Field
Chapter 31 The shattered Field
When Davan and Jorren arrived at the tier five walkway that led to the shattered fields, Davan was close to losing it. One of the reasons why he didn’t like having a conversation with Jorren was that he was so quiet, yet knew the best way to frustrate his statements.
“I could have chosen not to rescue you that day, Jorren,” he cried out. “But I did.”
“No one asked you to,”Jorren said simply.
“Are you saying you had a way of making it through the seals at the main gate,” Davan retorted.
“I had an advantage,” Jorren said.
“You think you do,” Davan was close to snapping now. “But you don’t. You don’t know anything about how this system operates. Do you naturally underestimate things, or is it a habit that runs in the blood?”
Jorren didn’t reply
“I do expect that you understand the gravity of the mission though,” he said. “The longer we stay in the shattered field, the high risk we have of being ruined.
Jorren didn’t speak. He felt Davan was giving too much emphasis on what was on unnecessary, and he didn’t like it. He didn’t like people who had a habit of stressing matters more than they should be.
When they arrived at the cave that Davan described would lead them to the shattered fields, Davan walked in first, using his essence to create a ball of flame that lighted the tunnel for them. Jorren followed closely. It was a good thing though, Jorren thought.
If he had led the way into the tunnel, he would be able to curate a fire, but he didn’t think it would be bright enough to lead them through. And because he exercised his power by exerting his negative resonance, he would have a lot of troubles pulling dry energy from the air enough to sustain the fire.
When they burst through into the shattered fields, Jorren couldn’t believe what he was seeing. He was in the midst of a beautiful meadow, the sun up high in the sky. It was as if the current location wasn’t experiencing the same weather they had back at Vashen city.
“Damn it,” Davan Rell cursed. “I underestimated the power of this place. How in the world did I agree to come to this place?”
He felt as if somewhere had broken inside him and his energy was draining out of him in waves. Ahead of them, in the distance was the soulwell. Davan hurried off towards it without glancing back.
Jorren on the other hand, felt more power than he had ever felt in his life. It was as if the meadow was charging him. It didn’t look like he was struggling. It looked like he was thriving. He scurried to catch up with the racing Davan before he disappeared into the soulwell without him.
Then it happened. A figure with the smoking silhouette appeared from nowhere, blocking Davan’s path. Davan raised his hand, his gesture a little weak. Brilliant golden energy crackled between his fingers. As he was about to launch it at the smoky ghost, the energy in his hand crackled and fizzled out.
Davan stumbled, and for the first time in Jorren’s life, his eyes widened. Before he could reach him, Davan was stumbling forward to the floor. Jorren could not save him, but there was the smoky thing descending on Davan.
Jorren stretched his hand at the shadow monster, pulling the negative resonance from this soul. It rushed out like a tornado, landing on the shadow monster so heavily that it fizzled on the spot.
Jorren looked at his hand. He was enjoying this new found power a little too much, but that was at the expense of Davan Rell. He wondered if the way he felt was the way Davan and people like Sel Voras felt back at Vashen.
When he got to Davan, the young man who used to look like he could pull the world down was looking sick. He pulled him towards him, slinging his arm around his neck and walking towards the soulwell.
As Jorren got closer to the soulwell, he realized in a rude shock that the soulwell didn’t belong to Vashen. Davan was a former shade of himself, and he didn’t think it was the apporpriate time for himto start shooting questions.
He pulled Davan along until he got to the entrance of the soulwell, then gently lowered him to the floor to sit down. He looked outside to the meadow, wondering why such a pretty place was such a problem for the likes of Davan Rell.
Despite standing in the entrance of the soulwell and looking over Davan, he didn’t fell any less worse than he did when he walked through the tunnel to the meadow.
Davan coughed, then he stirred. Jorren turned at the slight rustle, then lowered to Davan’s height, his eyes narrowing as he examined him. He wanted to be sure that Davan was still okay. He couldn’t believe that he was being too concerned fot the one who saw him as distraction he couldn’t still quite place.
Davan sneezed this time, then his eyes flipped open. Davan glanced around the entrnce before his face finally fell on Jorren. In a speed that made him almost stagger, he glanced around one more time before turning to Jorren.
“Where in the world are we?”
Jorren hesitated before his reply. “The Pre-evaulation structure. This was our way to the soulwell. I was only waiting for you to recover.”
“Recover?” He headed towards the meadows and Joren stepped in his way.
“What?”
“I’m not carrying you again.”
“What?” Davan Rell blinked.
“You heard me,” Jorren added. “If you’re ready to cater for yourself from this point, feel free to proceed to the shatterred fields on your own.”
Jorren didn’t know if the momentary weakness made Davan forget too. Davan was wondering why Jorren was speaking in parables. It was neither the fault of the both parties. It was the effect of the shattered fields.
Then the actual problem that should make the both of them worry showed up.
