Chapter 94: Shadows at Dawn

The cold mountain wind accompanied Vaiolet's group as they descended from the Echo Sanctuary. Although they had overcome the guardian's trials and obtained the fragment, none could ignore the tension that still lingered between them. Each had faced their own fears, and though they emerged victorious, the emotional scars were deep.

Vaiolet held the fragment of light in one hand, wrapped in cloth for protection. The warm sensation emanating from it provided a small comfort, as if a tiny part of Queen Amaranta was with her. Beside her, Kael kept one hand close to the hilt of his sword, his eyes always alert. Behind them, the mage and the others moved forward in silence, their expressions serious and their steps careful.

—"What's next?" —Kael asked, finally breaking the silence.

The mage consulted an old scroll he had pulled from his bag.

—"The next sanctuary is on the other side of the valley, in the Shadowlands. But getting there won't be easy."

Vaiolet frowned.

—"What does that mean?"

The mage sighed, carefully rolling up the scroll.

—"The Shadowlands are infested with creatures that don't belong to this world. It's said that the very air can poison you if you stay too long."

—"Perfect," —Kael said, his tone sarcastic— "Exactly what we needed."

Vaiolet glanced at him sideways but said nothing. She knew Kael was tired, just like the rest of the group. However, they couldn't afford to rest too long. Every day they spent without completing their mission was another day their enemy gained ground.

—"We'll rest in the clearing tonight and leave at dawn," —Vaiolet announced, stopping next to a group of trees that offered some protection from the wind.

Kael nodded and began setting up camp, while the mage drew symbols on the ground to raise a protective barrier. Vaiolet stepped a few paces away, gazing at the distant mountains, the fragment still tightly gripped in her hand.

—"Are you okay?" —Kael asked, approaching her.

Vaiolet didn't respond immediately. Her eyes remained fixed on the horizon, as if searching for something she couldn't find.

—"I can't stop thinking about what the guardian said. 'The truth is a double-edged sword.' What do you think it means?"

Kael crossed his arms, thoughtful.

—"I suppose it means that even when we know the truth, it might not be what we want to hear. But that doesn't change what we have to do."

Vaiolet looked at him, and for a moment, a small smile appeared on her lips.

—"You always have an answer for everything, don't you?"

Kael shrugged.

—"I just try to be helpful."

Night fell quickly, enveloping the clearing in almost complete darkness, except for the fire crackling in the center of the camp. Vaiolet was on watch, sitting near the fire with her gaze lost in the flames. Her mind constantly returned to the illusions she had faced in the sanctuary. Even though she knew they weren't real, her mother's words still echoed in her head.

Kael approached with a blanket and draped it over her.

—"It's cold. You don't want to get sick."

Vaiolet accepted the blanket with a slight nod.

—"Thanks."

Kael sat beside her, leaving a small space between them. For a while, neither spoke. The silence between them was comfortable, but also heavy with things neither dared to say.

—"Why do you keep doing this?" —Vaiolet finally asked, breaking the silence.

Kael looked at her, confused.

—"What do you mean?"

—"This. Risking your life for me, for this mission. You could have left all of this behind and gone on with your life."

Kael picked up a stick and began drawing shapes in the dirt by the fire.

—"I could have, yes. But... I wouldn't be able to live with myself if I did. From the moment I met you, I knew there was something special about you. Something worth protecting."

Vaiolet looked at him, surprised by his sincerity.

—"I'm not that special, Kael."

—"That's what you think," —he replied, with a faint smile— "But I see something different."

Vaiolet's heart beat a little faster, but before she could respond, a noise in the forest put them on alert. They both stood up instantly, hands on their weapons.

—"What was that?" —Kael asked quietly.

—"I don't know, but we're not alone," —Vaiolet replied, her eyes scanning the darkness.

The forest was completely silent, except for the sound of their own steps as they moved further into the shadows. The campfire was left behind, but they couldn't ignore the fact that something or someone was stalking them.

Suddenly, a low, guttural growl broke the silence, followed by a pair of glowing eyes that appeared between the trees. Kael drew his sword, positioning himself between Vaiolet and the creature.

—"Stay behind me."

—"No, we'll fight together," —Vaiolet retorted, pulling out her dagger.

The creature emerged from the shadows, revealing its form. It was enormous, with dark, leathery skin that seemed to absorb the light. Its teeth were long and sharp, and its eyes glowed with an unnatural light.

The mage appeared behind them, casting a spell that illuminated the area with a bluish light.

—"Careful! It's a specter from the Shadowlands. If it bites us, the venom will be lethal."

—"Any suggestions on how to kill it?" —Kael asked as he dodged an attack from the creature.

—"Aim for its chest, where the light is weakest," —the mage replied.

Vaiolet and Kael nodded, coordinating their movements to attack the specter. Kael distracted the creature with quick strikes, while Vaiolet searched for an opening to strike its weak point.

—"Now!" —Kael shouted, leaping to the side to give Vaiolet room.

Vaiolet moved quickly, driving her dagger into the creature's chest. A horrible scream echoed through the forest as the specter disintegrated into a cloud of black smoke.

Kael approached Vaiolet, examining her to make sure she wasn't injured.

—"Are you okay?"

—"I'm fine," —she replied, wiping the blood off her dagger.

The mage approached, his face pale.

—"This is just the beginning. If we're already facing creatures from the Shadowlands here, it means we're getting close."

Vaiolet looked toward the horizon, where the mountains loomed large.

—"Then there's no time to lose. Let's keep moving."

The group returned to camp, but no one could sleep after the encounter. They knew what they had faced was just a warning of the dangers awaiting them.

Vaiolet sat by the fire, holding the fragment of the queen in her hands. Her thoughts were divided between the past and the future, between the losses she had suffered and the purpose that drove her to keep going.

Kael sat beside her once more, in silence. They didn't need words to understand each other in that moment. Though the path ahead was uncertain and dangerous, both knew that as long as they were together, they could face it.

Dawn found them ready to continue. The Shadowlands awaited them, with its dangers and challenges, but also with the promise of another fragment that would bring them one step closer to their goal.

Vaiolet looked at her group, her eyes shining with determination.

—"Together, we'll face whatever comes. And together, we'll be victorious."

Kael nodded, standing by her side.

—"Always."

The group moved forward toward the mountains, their silhouettes outlined against the horizon as the sun slowly rose, lighting their w
