Chapter 148
Lila had never had her fingers kissed by a man before.
She thought that was something a man should only do when proposing to a woman—getting down on one knee, slipping a ring on her finger, and then kissing it.
But today her fingers were kissed, thanks to Alexander's cruel way of taming her.
The feeling left her upset and confused.
Alexander took in every bit of her hesitant, resistant expression. His dark eyes flashed with displeasure, and he suddenly yanked her forward!
Caught off guard, Lila crashed into his chest.
As she looked up, his restrained voice reached her ears, "I agreed to build a relationship with you, yet you're avoiding me and don't want me to touch you? Lila, do you think I'm easy to deal with, that you dare to push my limits again and again?"
Without thinking, she denied it, "No."
"No? Then what's with your resistance and rejection today?"
"I just think that since you have someone you like, you shouldn't get too close to me."
Alexander raised his tone, pressing her, "Are you bothered by Celeste?"
As soon as those words fell, Lila heard a scornful laugh escape from his lips, "Lila, what right do you have to be bothered by Celeste? When you married me, didn't you know I don't love you, don't like you, and didn't even want to marry you?"
She lifted her head and said through gritted teeth, "I knew you didn't love me and didn't want to marry me, but I didn't know your heart belonged to someone else."
Alexander's lips curved into a cold smile, "So what? If you'd known my heart belonged to someone else, would you still have needed Grandma's help? Would you still have needed a lawyer to defend your father?"
Of course not.
She would still have needed those things, but at least she would have been mentally prepared.
In the silence, Alexander's cold tone reached her ears, "Since you don't have the capital to be proud, don't throw tantrums at me here. Don't humiliate yourself, understand?"
Lila silently bit her teeth, meeting his gaze.
Alexander raised an eyebrow, "What are you looking at? Not happy about it?"
She didn't speak, but instead reached back and grabbed his hand, "You're overthinking it. I don't mind you touching me. Your hands are so good-looking, it's my blessing that you'd hold mine. I just wasn't clear how loyal you could be to the person you like. Since you feel that being married to me doesn't require loyalty, then from now on, whether you want to hold my hand, hug me, or kiss me, I definitely won't say a word. Today I was just overthinking things. I thought Mr. Sinclair was a devoted person who would stay faithful for the one he loves."
"When did I ever give you that impression?"
"Didn't I just say? I misunderstood. Now that we've cleared things up, can we go see Grandma?"
Alexander looked at her face, his dark eyes somewhat dim.
She was clearly saying everything to go along with what he wanted, but why did he feel like every word was so insincere, and he even had the feeling he was being brushed off?
A passerby walked by, someone who happened to know Lila. Seeing her standing with a tall, handsome man, they smiled and greeted her, "Lila, you're back?"
Lila dropped the resistance from her face and smiled at them, "Yes, Auntie, where are you heading?"
The passerby said, "Me? I'm going to the market to buy some groceries. Is this your boyfriend? He's really handsome."
She smiled, neither explicitly saying "yes" nor saying "no."
But the auntie had already taken her smile as confirmation and said, "Hurry and take your boyfriend home to show your grandma. She'll definitely love him. I'm off to buy groceries now."
She waved her hand, smiling, "Goodbye, Auntie."
