Chapter 42 CHANGE OF PLANS

Chapter 42 CHANGE OF PLANS
ZARA'S POV:
Again?

I couldn't help but raise an eyebrow at his question. I thought he was done with Nick but he was insulting my friend again. Setting aside the plates I was wiping, I turned to face him.

“Nick isn’t a bastard, Lucas. So, don’t you dare call him that when you don’t even know him personally,” I warned him.

He looked at me with eyes that melted my heart. “Of course! Of course, I know that bastard! He's also a wealthy man. And he's interested in you!”

I couldn't help but wonder why everyone saw malice in my friendship with Nick. And why was he furious? He didn’t have a right anymore! We already agreed to divorce each other, and we were just living together for our son’s sake and even that, it would have to end soon.

I tried to be nice despite everything but it was becoming increasingly difficult to understand him and his mood swings. It felt like trying to solve a complex puzzle!

“Can you stop meddling in my affairs?”

He was stunned for a moment before he spoke again. “So you admit that you have an affair with him,” he concluded.

I rolled my eyes. “Seriously, Lucas? Don’t I have the right to be happy again? You even have a woman by your side despite being married to me, and now that we are finalizing our divorce, I can’t be friends with any man? Do you really think you have the right to complain right now?”

I couldn’t stop myself from ranting because he was being too much!

“What kind of mother are you? Letting another man take our son for a breakfast date?”

My nostrils flared at his accusation. Damn it but he really knew how to push my anger button!

“What did you say? And who are you to question me as Ken’s mother? For six years, Lucas, you are not with us. Just because you are spending time with our son occasionally doesn’t mean you are a good father to him. Have you forgotten? Your time is almost up,” I reminded him of our agreement.

“Meaning to say, you are still my wife, and I don’t allow you to see another man, Zara,” he warned me.

I laughed at his statement. “You probably know how it feels, considering what you did to me when you were with Giselle.”

I turned my back on him, knowing that I wouldn't gain anything from continuing the conversation. Honestly, I couldn't wrap my head around his behavior. He was acting completely contrary to my expectations.

He should have been happy for me, now that I had found someone to love. Shouldn't he be even happier? After all, he would be free from the bonds of our marriage!

“I’m still talking to you!” he yelled.

I just ignored him and went upstairs. Then I locked the door. However, due to his strange behavior, my night turned into a sleepless one. My mind was exhausted, and deciphering his actions felt more challenging than my board exams for the CPA.

The next day, I woke up early as usual. It wasn't even six o'clock, and I was already in the kitchen. After ironing Ken’s uniforms, I cooked breakfast. Since it was still early, I prepared fried rice, sunny-side-up eggs, hotdogs, and bacon. Afterward, I took a quick shower. I still had some tasks to attend to at my business branch office.

Later on, Ken arrived with his school bag and everything. I let him have his breakfast while I had coffee only. I really had no appetite to eat anything and then my husband showed up at the breakfast room.

“Good morning, Daddy!” Ken cheerfully greeted Lucas.

He was already in his suit. “Morning, son,” he replied to Ken.

But his gaze toward me held a stern expression. I chose to avoid eye contact. I had no time to dwell on his seemingly erratic behavior and I refused to analyze his bipolar tendencies!

“It seems you have somewhere to go,” he said.

I just nodded.

“I’ll drop Enrique at his school. Do you need a ride as well?” he asked.

“No, thank you. I’ll just take a cab,” I replied.

After breakfast, Ken was excited to ride with his Dad but then a simple phone call ruined my son’s happiness again. With his facial expression, I could tell it was Giselle who called him.

“Change of plans. I can’t delay this meeting,” he told me and then he patted Ken’s head. “I’ll just make it up to you later, okay? Mommy will be the one to take you to your school.”
Then he kissed Ken on the forehead to bid him goodbye. Last time, he kissed me goodbye as well but it seemed he was back to being himself, the one who was head over heels for that model.

“Is Daddy okay, Mom?” Ken asked.

“Yes. He is just busy,” I replied.

“He didn’t kiss you like the last time.

My jaw dropped at his statement. Did he really have to remind me?

“Come on, let’s take a cab for school,” I told him.

When we arrived at the school, I escorted him to his classroom before taking a cab again to Antoinette’s place to retrieve my car.

Then I drove toward the boutique that Antoinette had recommended yesterday. The woman who introduced herself as Jozel immediately assisted me in selecting styles that would suit me.

Later on,  I left the boutique with several bags of stylish clothes.  Afterward, I visited a renowned makeup store to purchase beauty products. I carefully selected lipstick shades and other makeup items. I also bought skincare products.

This day wouldn't end without making Lucas realize what kind of woman he was about to lose!

I was excited to see his expression but it was me who was surprised when I got home and he was there.

“What are you doing here? Aren’t you supposed to be at work?”

He smirked. “Are you disappointed that I might catch you cheating?”

I scoffed. “I would never cheat on anyone, Lucas.”

“I met Nick earlier and I invited him to come over,” he informed me.

I didn’t understand his motive and why he told Nick to come to the house. Oh no, I would be in trouble. He disliked Nick so what was his reason for inviting him over?

“Seems like you're excited to see him again,” Lucas confidently said as he settled on the sofa.

“Stop implying things, Lucas,” I said.

He just arched his eyebrows before taking the remote control from the table. I was about to go upstairs when I heard the sound of Nick’s motorcycle coming to the driveway.

“Oh, there he is, the one you've been waiting for,” Lucas stated with a clenched jaw.
