CHAPTER 172
THIRD PERSON'S POV

A week had passed since Kieran woke up. The hospital room, a place of fear and doubt had become something else now, a quiet space where healing was happening, slowly but surely.

Each day brought a win, a firmer grip, a few more steps and a glance that showed flashes of the man Elysia had loved. It wasn’t perfect. It wasn’t fast. It was real.

The doctors said he was doing better than anyone expected. His body fought back with strength they hadn’t seen in years. He pushed through pain through fatigue through moments when he wanted to give up. Still he tried.

They were honest too. They told Elysia there would be struggles. There would be days when the pain returned. Days when progress slowed. Days when the weight of recovery felt like much to carry.

She stayed by his side every day. She helped him stand helped him walk reminded him not to let frustration win. She read to him talked about their life outside these walls whispered stories of hope until he started smiling

On the morning of the day everything changed. The doctors said he could go home. Not fully healed, no one promised that but well enough to continue his rehab at home with therapy and the love of those who cared for him most.

Elysia arrived early her heart beating with anticipation. When she walked into the room she saw Kieran sitting up his face lit with a smile wide it almost hurt to look at.

"Ready to go?" She asked, her voice warm.

"More than ready." He answered, his voice strong now clear. "I’ve had enough of this place."

She laughed, a sound of joy. "I’ve already got the car ready. Hope is waiting at home. She’s been counting down the minutes."

He reached for her hand, his fingers lacing through hers. "Thank you. For everything."

She squeezed his hand. "You don’t have to thank me. I’d do it over again."

"I know you would. I want to say it anyway. Thank you for not giving up on me."

They drove home in silence the road the landscape comforting after the cold sterility of the hospital. Kieran looked out the window watching the trees pass, the lake shimmering in the distance the sky wider and bluer than he remembered.

"It looks different." He said softly. "Everything looks different."

"It’s spring!" Elysia replied. "Everything is new. Everything is growing."

He turned to her his eyes filled with feeling so deep it made her breath catch. "Like us. Like our family."

She smiled, tears in her eyes. "Yes. Like us."

They pulled up to the lake house and Hope was waiting on the porch. Her little body bounced with excitement the moment the car stopped. She ran forward her voice bright and loud.

"Papa! Papa you’re home! You’re home!"

Kieran stepped out carefully, his movements slow but steady, he knelt down, arms open. She flew into them wrapping her arms around his neck.

"I missed you so much, Papa!" She cried, her face buried in his chest.

He held her tight, his eyes closed. "I missed you too sweetheart. More than you’ll ever know."

Sophie came running from the house tail wagging wild. She circled them nudging Kieran’s legs pressing her nose against him like she couldn’t believe he was back.

"Looks like someone else missed you too." Elysia said, laughing.

Kieran bent down. Scratched Sophie behind the ears. "I missed you too girl."

Inside the house smelled like warmth and food. Elizabeth had cooked a feast, dishes that Elysia knew were few of her mom's top dishes.

Thomas stood near the doorway, his presence calm and steady. William and Sarah were there along with Samuel, their faces glowing with happiness.

"We’re so glad you’re home Kieran." Elizabeth said, her voice thick. "We’ve been so worried."

Kieran smiled, his heart full. "Thank you. For everything. For taking care of my family while I was gone."

Thomas clapped him on the shoulder, his voice rough. "That’s what family does. We take care of each other."

The afternoon passed in celebration. The table was filled with laughter and conversation. Hope was the center of attention her giggles ringing through the air like music.

"Papa, can you play with me?" She asked, her eyes shining.

Kieran looked at her his heart aching with love. "I’m a tired, sweetheart. I promise, soon as soon as I feel better, we’ll play as much as you want."

Hope nodded, trusting. "Okay Papa. I’ll wait."

The evening settled in quietly. Just the two of them sat on the porch watching the sun dip, below the horizon painting the sky in orange and pink. The lake was still. The world was peaceful.

"Kieran," Elysia said, her voice soft. "I never thought we’d be here. I never thought we’d make it."

He turned to her his eyes full of love. "Neither did I. We did. We’re here."

She leaned into him, her head resting on his shoulder. "I love you."

"I love you too." He said, pressing a kiss to her forehead. "Now and forever."

They sat in the quiet night watching the stars blink into view. The future stretched before them, bright, uncertain, and full of promise. They didn’t need to be afraid.

They were together.

That was enough.
