Chapter 212
Chapter 212
Sophie received Jane's distress call and quickly took a cab to the hotel.
When she arrived at the hotel room, she saw the police were already there.
She didn't know what had happened. As she walked in, she saw Jane sitting in a chair with red eyes, tears streaming down silently.
Ted stood on the other side, with the police questioning him.
He was well-dressed and handled the police smoothly. His eyes kept glancing at Jane, filled with intense possessiveness.
Sophie stood in front of Jane, blocking Ted's view.
She hugged Jane, knowing without asking what had happened.
Ted really was a wretch. He already had a fiancée, yet he simply wouldn't leave Jane alone.
"Come stay at my place." Sophie figured if Jane stayed at the hotel, Ted would keep coming to harass her.
Jane accepted Sophie's suggestion.
Even with the police there, they couldn't really do anything. No sex had occurred, no fight had broken out, at most, it was just an emotional dispute between two people. They only gave Ted a verbal warning, no real punishment.
While the police were there, Jane grabbed her things and followed Sophie to check out.
As soon as the police left, Ted came down too.
Sophie and Jane had just hailed a cab and were about to get in.
"Jane!" Ted called out to her.
Jane took a deep breath and held it, not wanting to deal with him.
Sophie let Jane get in the car first. She closed the door and faced Ted. "If you truly cared for her, you'd at the very least show her the respect she deserves. If you can't offer her a future, don't trifle with her."
"I heard you and Matthew got divorced." Ted looked away from Jane and stared at Sophie. "Just because Matthew's old flame came back and he doesn't want you anymore, doesn't mean you should come between her and me."
Sophie laughed coldly. "You don't need to try to get to me. At least when Matthew was with me, he was faithful. What about you? You want to have your cake and eat it too. You're not much of a man."
Ted's face darkened.
Sophie didn't care. "A man like you really has no sense of responsibility. Unfaithful to your fiancée, disrespectful to Jane. Seriously, you're trash through and through."
After telling Ted off, Sophie felt much better.
Not wanting to waste more words on him, she got in the car, closed the door, and told the driver to go.
In the car, Jane looked a bit better than before.
Sophie held her hand without saying anything.
After getting home, Sophie poured Jane a glass of water. "You did the right thing pulling away. If you kept getting tangled up with him, his fiancée would definitely come after you."
Jane held the water and took a sip. When she spoke again, her voice still trembled. "He just sees me as his plaything."
Sophie frowned. "He can't give you what you want."
"I know. I was just fooling myself." Jane took a deep breath and gave her a bitter smile. "Deep down, he looks down on me. Because my mom was someone's mistress, he thinks I can be one too."
Sophie had no blood relation to her, but hearing this still made her heart ache.
Jane loved Ted, but how much Ted truly cared for Jane was anyone's guess.
Jane arranged to meet Jade. They didn't have much to say to each other.
It was only because they were mother and daughter that they had to meet at all.
Jade just asked how she was doing and if she had a boyfriend.
Jane answered honestly. After a few bland exchanges, they ran out of things to say.
"That's Evelyn." Jade suddenly looked into the distance.
Jane followed her gaze and saw Evelyn carrying a limited edition bag, chatting and laughing with a girl in a wheelchair beside her. They looked like mother and daughter.
"The woman in the wheelchair is Matthew's first love." Jade sneered. "Sophie is really useless. Two years, and she couldn't even compete with a disabled person."
"Mom!" Jane frowned. "Not everyone steals other people's lovers."
Jade stared at her in disbelief. "Are you talking about me?"
Jane took a deep breath. "I'm just stating a fact."
"Ha. A fact? What's a fact? The one who is loved, that's the fact. Matthew doesn't love Sophie, and that's the original sin of their marriage. Evelyn likes that disabled girl, and that's the fact."
Jade laughed coldly. "If you had the ability, you'd have Ted wrapped around your finger. If you were capable, would he listen to his family and go on blind dates with other women? Jane, this society teaches women a very realistic truth: marrying well is better than doing well. Stop dreaming about love all day. What you can hold in your hands is what's real. If I hadn't married Walter, who knows what kind of life I'd be living? Don't look down on me for chasing wealth. You know what those days were like when I was married to your father. This is my one life, why shouldn't I live well if I can?"
Jane didn't want to hear her so-called wisdom.
This excuse for a reunion ended badly.
Everyone in Silverlight City's high society knew Matthew's first love had returned. Evelyn really liked this daughter-in-law and kept her close despite her disability.
Everyone said Matthew and Victoria's wedding was coming soon.
Some envied Victoria for having such a good mother-in-law and such a devoted boyfriend who divorced Sophie the moment she came back.
Others felt sorry for Sophie.
They said she was more like a plaything, a comfort for Matthew when he was lonely.
When Sophie heard such comments, she only rolled her eyes at them.
Emily was eating a banana. "I just don't get it. Didn't they say she wouldn't live long? How can Evelyn let Matthew marry a woman who won't live long?"
"I heard Victoria's mother and Evelyn are best friends." Jane had heard this from others.
"They have that connection?" Emily was shocked. "Then why did she treat Bella so differently?"
Jane glanced at Sophie. "Because Matthew likes Victoria, not Bella."
Emily was speechless.
The reason was really that simple and real.
"I heard Evelyn brought Victoria back to the Moore Mansion." Emily had been carefully watching Sophie's expression.
Sophie looked at Emily. "You don't need to be so careful. I'm fine. Just think of it as hearing gossip about rich families. Tell me openly, I like hearing it."
Emily had been holding it in all evening and said, "Joshua told me that Evelyn wanted Victoria to move into Cloudview Apartments to live with Matthew, but Matthew refused. That's why Evelyn brought Victoria back to the Moore Mansion. And they're preparing for their wedding."
