Chapter 44 Elizabeth Dies

Chapter 44 Elizabeth Dies

Emily's POV

If it weren't for Elizabeth still being in their hands, I would've really wanted to kill him right then and there.

It was one thing to not give me Elizabeth, but now he actually wanted my help to throw off the enemy's trail?
I knew without a doubt that this car definitely had a tracking device planted by the Shadowmoon Council.

They just wanted to use me to confuse the Shadowmoon Council, so they could safely transfer Joshua by water or land.

Great, just great, Douglas, you really are something!

Just as I could barely contain my murderous intent, Joshua spoke up, "What are you waiting for? Get going. You wait patiently for Mrs. Howard to come home, don't worry about me. I think I'm pretty safe."

I looked at Joshua deeply, wanting to engrave him in my memory. This was a person worthy of respect.

I left with heavy steps.

Joshua, don't worry. If you die, I'll definitely kill Douglas to avenge you!

I got in the car as Douglas required, started the engine, and slowly drove toward the city on the surface.

But I was thinking of countermeasures the whole time.

While adjusting the rearview mirror, I quietly used my phone to connect to that earpiece's signal—the one I'd slipped in when I patted Joshua's back, the one Douglas gave me to monitor Bruce.

I heard what I wanted to hear: Elizabeth was in the house, just hidden away.

Knowing this, I drove a distance then immediately stopped the car and went down the other side of the mountain.

This place wasn't far from the sea. Douglas would most likely take the water route. I bet he would.

I bet right.

A speedboat was stopped on the water.

I slipped into the water, breathing through a reed, slowly approaching along the boat's hull.

This place was so close to the sea, their most likely escape route had to be by water.

Although this was just my guess, when I saw the speedboat, I was completely certain.

They were stopped here, which meant those four people hadn't brought Joshua over yet.

I had already gotten close to the speedboat, ready to go.

Preparing to rescue Elizabeth.

I didn't act rashly because both Joshua and Elizabeth were in their hands. If something went wrong, it would be very troublesome.

I could save one at most, but I couldn't give up on Joshua.

So I chose to message Christopher, telling him to hurry over for backup.

With him here, we'd have a better chance of winning.

Meanwhile, I relied on the terrain and my analysis of Douglas to figure out he would leave by water, so I came ahead to set up an ambush.

Next I just had to wait for Christopher to arrive.

If they got on the boat before Christopher came, I'd have to risk rescuing Joshua and Elizabeth.

In other words, I had to make my move before they got on the boat.

I wasn't sure how far Christopher was from here. I could only place my hopes on him.

A sudden gunshot interrupted my thoughts.

I was pressed against the boat hull. From this angle, I couldn't see what was happening on shore at all, only hear the gunfire getting more and more intense.

The two people on the speedboat above me also moved, their gun muzzles flashing fire toward the shore.

My heart suddenly tightened—Joshua and Elizabeth were both outside with no cover. If something happened...

I didn't dare think about it.

Not knowing the situation, I could only first take out the two people on the speedboat.

I quietly poked my head up along the cold boat hull. Those two people's attention was completely drawn to the commotion on shore, their gun muzzles flashing fire frequently, seemingly not noticing the approaching danger at all.

I had loaded new poison needles in the car. After taking one person by surprise, I used my knife to deal with the other. Everything happened very quickly, very fast.

The two fell into the sea, and I took the chance to get on the speedboat, crouching inside to secretly observe the situation outside.

Soon, the gunfire stopped. I saw someone on the shore using light signals to communicate.

I could understand them, but I had no light to respond with.

However, I'd already confirmed the other party's identity, so I simply spoke up to identify myself.

I quickly got off the speedboat and called out impatiently, "Elizabeth? Where are you?"

No one responded. I instinctively sensed something wrong, grabbed the flashlight from Christopher's hand, and looked around.

Soon, I saw that familiar silhouette lying on the sand.

Impossible!

I rushed over with a trembling body.

I didn't believe it. I didn't believe it.

I knelt on the ground and turned her over.

The light shone on her face. It was Elizabeth.

I wanted to call out to her, but I couldn't make a sound.

Just as I was in despair, Elizabeth coughed twice and slowly opened her eyes.

I felt a surge of joy.

Elizabeth grabbed my hand, "Emily, there's something I left at home."

"Emily, I know everything Bruce has been doing lately. I support you. Leave Bruce. He can't blame anyone else. It's all fate's arrangement."

She smiled and stopped breathing completely.

And when I looked down, her chest near her heart was bleeding.

With a gunshot wound like that, death was certain.

I stared blankly at her body.

Elizabeth was gone.

"Mrs. Howard died to save me. That shot was meant for me. When she heard the sound, she immediately knocked me to the ground, which is why..."

I recognized Joshua's voice.

I tried my best to control my emotions, forcing myself to calm down, "Whose people?"

Christopher walked over from a distance, "Shadowmoon Council's people. Looks like they'd been lying in ambush here all along. When we came, we'd already cleaned up the people on the perimeter, making sure no one followed us."

"But unfortunately, we didn't catch any of their mid or high-level people in this operation."

Shadowmoon Council, Douglas! You all deserve to die!

I won't let any of you go.

Christopher patted my shoulder, "My condolences."

I took a deep breath to control my emotions and stood up expressionlessly, "Bruce was arrested. Things are exposed. He's offended quite a few officials and mid-level military people. Plus the underworld and pirates are after him. Can you help me get him out?"

"I can trade all of Bruce's assets for his life. I won't let you help for nothing."

Elizabeth was dead. I couldn't watch her only son die too.

Even if this was the last thing I did for him, to have closure for our eight years together.

Thinking that in just a few days it would be our wedding, I felt everything had a surreal quality.

Christopher was silent for a long time, "This matter is indeed difficult, especially since my power isn't in Silverlight City. It's very difficult to get things done. But with his assets, we can give it a try."

"But in his current state, even if he gets out, I'm afraid it'll be very hard for him to stay in Zephyria."

I knew, of course. Christopher was being tactful, but setting aside everything else, just those pirates alone wouldn't let him go.

"It's fine. Have him leave Zephyria and go to another country. As long as he can survives, that's enough. Consider it my final obligation to Elizabeth."
