Chapter 44

Reaching into my pocket, I retrieved my purse and withdrew some money, extending it towards David. "Go buy some food," I instructed, watching as he eagerly accepted the cash.

"But also buy a lot of bandages at the pharmacy," I added.

"Okay," David replied, his face lighting up. "But the grocery store is really far from here. Can you drive me there, bro?" He paused, a hopeful glint in his eyes. "Can I call you that? Vampire bro?"

My brow furrowed in confusion. "Who told you that?"

David's grin widened. "Oh, that. The man we left behind told me. What did you do to cross him? He wanted to find you so badly."

I was taken aback by that statement because the person we left behind is Mr. Thomas. Why would he be searching for me so fervently?

*Police Station*

Mr. Thomas found himself at the police station, frustration boiling over as he demanded answers. "Are you serious right now? There's a case! Why won't you believe me?"

An officer calmly replied, "It was a simple car accident. Go to traffic management." As he pointed at the unit Mr. Thomas should go lay his complain.

Mr. Thomas's eyes widened in disbelief. "I saw a man biting someone's neck with my own eyes!"

"Do you drink and drive?" the officer inquired.

Mr. Thomas scoffed incredulously. "Drink and drive?" He moved closer to the officer, gripping his shoulder. "Investigate the scene properly. There were bloodstains at the crime scene! When I was in charge--"

Before he could finish his sentence, a voice interrupted him from behind. "If you keep it up, I will charge you with obstruction of justice."

Mr. Thomas spun around to see who had spoken, his frustration worn out. Pushing away the system in front of the officer, he exclaimed, "Hey! Did I damage public property now? Fine! Let's follow the law. Sounds great."

Mr. Thomas's rage seemed to know no bounds as he continued to wreak havoc within the police station. The other officers gathered, attempting to restrain him, their voices raised in a chorus of commands to cease his destructive behavior. "Stop it!" they shouted, struggling to contain him.

But Mr. Thomas was undeterred, his voice resolute as he fought against their grasp. "Let's do it!" he cried out, his determination palpable. "Let go of me! I used to be a detective too. I took down gangsters with just two punches back in my day!"

Despite his protests, the officers held on tight, refusing to yield to his demands. "Have you not heard of South E Police Station?" Mr. Thomas continued to shout, his frustration mounting. "Let go of me, you jerks! Get your captain! I want Detective John!"

A commanding voice cut through the chaos, causing Mr. Thomas to falter momentarily. He turned to see Detective John, his right-hand man from his past life that betrayed and killed him because he refused to kill Morgan Vale's. He was standing before him as he shouted, "Thomas!"

Without a word, Detective John seized Mr. Thomas and dragged him outside the station, away from the prying eyes of their colleagues. "Damn it!" he exclaimed, his tone laced with exasperation. "Why make a scene in front of your juniors? Don't embarrass yourself!"

Mr. Thomas met his gaze, his expression hardened. "Embarrassed myself? That used to be your specialty," he retorted bitterly. "When you were a rookie, you threw up after seeing dead bodies and peed your pants after fighting a culprit. Who had your back?"

Detective John's jaw clenched, a flicker of annoyance crossing his features. "Stop bringing up the past, okay?" he admonished, his voice tinged with frustration. "Why are you here?"

But Mr. Thomas was undeterred, his resolve unshaken. "I'm not done talking about the past," he declared. "You remember the cold case from fifteen years ago? The murder of a mom and daughter?"

Detective John's brow furrowed in confusion. "Yes, why are you bringing that up now?"

Mr. Thomas's eyes gleamed with determination as he revealed his discovery. "I found the twin sister that ran away," he explained. "And I also found the culprit."

Detective John's interest was piqued, his gaze locking onto Mr. Thomas's. "The culprit?"

"After the incident, a man searched for Annabelle Keys for fifteen years," Mr. Thomas revealed, his voice steady. "I even know where his house is. You guys have to investigate him. He's the key to solving the case."

Detective John's brow furrowed in confusion as he listened to Mr. Thomas's disjointed explanation. "What are you talking about?" he questioned, his tone tinged with frustration.

But Mr. Thomas pressed on, his voice urgent. "I got into an accident while tailing him. Do you know what I saw at the crime scene? I saw a man biting someone's neck! The culprit is not human."

Detective John's frustration mounted, his patience wearing thin. "Are you still on about that? Seriously? When will you come to your senses?"

Mr. Thomas's eyes widened in surprise. "What?"

Detective John's tone turned stern as he recounted the past. "You resigned because of that case. You kept talking nonsense about how they were monsters and stuff that doesn't exist while helping you."

Mr. Thomas's expression fell, his resolve wavering. "Dammit!" Detective John's frustration boiled over as he continued, "It's about time you forgot about that case. You should go home. Let me know if you need anything for your private detective agency."

Speechless, Mr. Thomas could only watch as Detective John tapped his shoulder reassuringly. "You should stop talking about monsters and things that don't exist."

But Mr. Thomas's anger flared, and in a moment of recklessness, he seized Detective John's hand and pinned it behind his back. Detective John grunted in pain, his expression contorting.

"What I need is for you and your team to investigate the murder case, you jerk!" Mr. Thomas's voice was laced with fury as he pushed Detective John away.

Grimacing in discomfort, Detective John muttered, "It hurts! And control that temper of yours!"

Undeterred, Mr. Thomas before storming away, his anger fueling his determination. "You wait and see. I'm going to bring you proper evidence. You just wait." Then he walked away.

Left standing alone, Detective John watched Mr. Thomas's retreating figure, his expression a mix of concern and exasperation. It seemed as though Mr. Thomas's obsession with something that has consumed him entirely, leaving Detective John to wonder if he would ever find peace.
