Chapter 20: The Confrontation

The air was heavy with anticipation in the mansion, as if the walls breathed with it, holding their collective breath. Holly's heart beat within her chest as she faced Victor, still hearing his words.

"You have learned the most important lesson of all, Holly," Victor said. "You're ready to tell the story now."

But despite the sense of peace she had been left with at the time, a nagging uncertainty lingered. Something wasn't quite finished yet. There was just one piece of the puzzle yet to be properly placed.

Victor's smile had softened when he spoke, but Holly still couldn't shake the feeling that his real intentions lay hidden behind the enigmatic gaze he had worn all evening.

Victor," Holly said, her voice firm, but trembling as the moment weighed down upon her. "There's one thing that doesn't make any sense to me. Everything, the Gala, the riddles, and the treasure.you planned everything. Why?

Victor stood in silence for a second, his gaze narrowing ever so slightly. He cast a look at the letters spread out on the table. He had just heard the truth. Treasure is not what lay within; rather, something infinitely more valuable lay hidden there.

"Why did I do it?" Victor echoed quietly, barely a whisper, to the immense and silent space surrounding him. "To protect it. So that it would not end up in the wrong hands.

"The treasure?" Holly inquired, puzzled. "The letters?"

"Yes, ever," Victor said. "The letters symbolize the secret heritage of my family. A heritage of goodwill, of pity, of love—things most people discount in their zeal for more concrete benefits. I wasn't going to let anyone random find them, or worse, exploit them.

Holly furrowed her brow, trying to make sense of his words. The more she thought about it, the more something didn't feel right. "But why go to all this trouble? Why not just reveal the truth earlier?

Victor hesitated, his fingers tracing the edge of one of the letters. "Because, Holly, I had to make sure that whoever found it knew what it was. You see, this treasure. it's more than just a set of letters. It's a symbol. A test. And I needed to know that you—of all people—would truly understand what it meant."

Holly felt a chill run down her spine. "What are you saying?

Victor took a step closer, never taking his eyes off hers. "I had to protect the legacy from those who might exploit it. My family has always lived in the shadow of power-hungry people who would stop at nothing to control it. To use it for their own gain."

Holly looked over to Nick, standing to the side, watching their conversation with wary eyes. It made her forget that she is not alone here.

"Who else is playing all this? Who else after all this legacy?" Nick asked her suspiciously as if asking for herself.

Victor's eyes flashed to Nick, and for the briefest of moments, a shadow crossed his face. But it was gone almost as quickly as it had appeared.

"You wouldn't understand," Victor said cryptically. "Some things are better left unsaid. But now that the secret is out, I have to make sure no one uses it for the wrong reasons."

Suddenly, the door creaked open, and a figure stepped into the room, casting a long shadow across the floor. Holly turned, her pulse quickening.

It was Clara.

She stood there for a moment, looking at the scene before her with calculating eyes. Her lips curled into a thin smile.

“Looks like we’re all here,” Clara said, her voice smooth but carrying an underlying edge.

Victor's face turned hard. "You've come too late, Clara. The legacy has been revealed. Secrets are no longer necessary."

Clara narrowed her eyes. "But you're under a misconception, Victor. I'm not here for the legacy. I am here to see it never steps into the open light of the day.

Before anyone could react, Clara moved swiftly to the table, her eyes locking onto the pile of letters. "You thought you could protect it, but you were wrong. There's something far more dangerous at play here."

Holly's heart was racing as she stepped forward. "What are you talking about?

Clara didn’t answer immediately. Instead, she reached into her coat pocket and pulled out a small, intricate key. She placed it on the table, the cold metal clinking against the surface.

“I’ve known about this legacy for years,” Clara said, her smile growing. “But it’s not just about the letters. There’s something else. A hidden vault that no one has found.”

Nick took a step forward, his eyes narrowing. "A secret vault? What are you referring to?"

Clara's eyes sparkled with excitement. "There's another part to the legacy-a part that was kept secret. And now, I'm going to find it."

Victor's face twisted in rage. "You don't understand, Clara. This isn't about treasure or power. It's about the message.

Is that so?" Clara's voice dripped with mockery. "Then why is it hidden away, if it's so innocent?"

Holly felt the room grow colder. She could feel the shift in the atmosphere as the confrontation escalated. It was clear now that Clara had been playing her own game all along, and she wasn't about to let Victor-or anyone-stand in her way.

"You're wrong," Victor said, his voice hardening. "You're just as selfish as the others who would misuse this legacy. That's why I had to keep it hidden. You don't care about the message; you just want power."

Clara laughed, the sound cold and bitter. "You think you are the only person who can hold this? Naive, Victor. You are always naive.

Without warning, Clara rushed towards the letters, but Holly was quicker. She picked up the pile of letters and took a step back, clutching them tightly in her hands.

"Stay away from those," Holly warned, her voice shaking with urgency.

Clara stopped, her eyes flashing with fury. "You think you can stop me? You're just a journalist. You have no idea what's at stake.

She gained determination. "I don't know everything, but I do know what's right. I am not going to let you abuse this legacy to your own end."

Nick went to Holly's side and stood there with her, looking into Clara's eyes. "We are not letting you win, Clara. Whatever your game plan is, ends here.

For a moment, the room held its breath, silent. Then, with one swift motion, Clara reached into her coat again and pulled out something that shone in the dim light: a gun.

"Not so fast," Clara said in a low, dangerous voice.

Holly froze. The weapon glinted in Clara's hand, its cold barrel aimed directly at her.

Victor's eyes widened in shock. "Clara, don't—"

But it was too late.

Clara’s lips curled into a sinister smile as she advanced, her eyes never leaving Holly’s. “You have no idea how much power you’re standing in the way of.”
