Chapter 161

Chapter 161
Eleanor POV

The confined space of the tent forced us to adapt, every movement deliberate, intimate in its necessity.

Derek shifted, rolling us so I was beneath him, his weight a comforting press as he braced himself on his elbows, his gaze never leaving mine. His lips trailed down my jaw, my neck, lingering at the hollow of my throat where my pulse raced beneath his touch. I tilted my head back, giving him access, my fingers digging into his shoulders as a soft sound escaped me—half sigh, half plea.

Outside, a branch snapped somewhere in the distance, a sharp reminder of the wilderness surrounding us, but it only deepened the sense of isolation, of being utterly alone with him in this fragile shelter.

He moved with a slow, deliberate care at first, each touch a question, each response from me an answer. But as the heat between us built, so did the urgency. His hands guided me, shifting us again so I straddled his hips, the change in position drawing a sharp breath from him as I settled against him. The sleeping bag bunched beneath us, the fabric rough against my knees, but I barely noticed.

All I could feel was Derek—his hands on my hips, steadying me, his eyes dark with a mix of awe and desire as he looked up at me, as if I were something he couldn’t quite believe was his. The tent trembled slightly as a gust of wind passed through, the fabric rippling like a living thing, casting faint, shifting shadows over his features, making this moment feel even more surreal, more precious.

“You’re everything,” he murmured, his voice low, almost broken, as his thumbs traced patterns against my skin. I leaned down to kiss him, my hair falling around us like a curtain, blocking out the faint starlight, creating a world of just us. The angle deepened our connection, drawing a low groan from him that vibrated through me, stoking the fire already burning in my veins.

I shifted, my hands pressing against his chest as I moved lower, my lips brushing over the scars I’d traced earlier, tasting the salt of his skin.

The scent of him—clean sweat mixed with the earthy tang of the outdoors—filled my senses, grounding me even as my heart raced. I glanced up at him, catching the way his breath hitched, the way his hands clenched briefly at his sides before relaxing, giving me control.

My touch was tentative at first, exploring, but grew bolder as I moved down, my lips and tongue tracing a path that made his muscles tense beneath me.

A soft, shuddering sound escaped him, raw and unguarded, and it sent a thrill through me, a quiet power in knowing I could unravel him as completely as he did me. The tent seemed to shrink further around us, the air growing thicker, warmer, as if the very space was holding its breath with us.

His hand found my hair, fingers threading gently through it, not guiding but simply holding, a silent encouragement. “Eleanor,” he breathed, my name a broken whisper, a plea wrapped in reverence.

I lingered, drawing out the moment, feeling the way his body responded, the way his control frayed at the edges, until he gently tugged me back up to him, his kiss fierce, desperate, as if he needed to reclaim some semblance of balance.

He shifted us once more, turning so we lay on our sides, face to face, his arm curling under me to pull me close, one leg hooked over mine to keep us tangled. The position was intimate, vulnerable, forcing us to look at each other, to see every flicker of emotion, every shudder of breath.

His hand slid down my spine, urging me closer still, his lips brushing mine in a kiss that was more breath than touch, a shared exhale of need. The forest outside seemed to fade further, the occasional rustle of leaves against the tent a distant echo, as if the world beyond had ceased to exist, leaving only the heat of his skin, the steady thrum of his pulse under my fingertips.

Every shift, every change in position, felt like a conversation without words—a way to explore, to claim, to reassure. His touch was everywhere, mapping the contours of my body as if committing them to memory, as if each curve, each sigh, was a treasure he’d never tire of discovering.

And I reciprocated, my hands roaming his back, tracing the lines of muscle and scar, learning him anew in this sacred, stolen space. The night air cooled the sweat on my skin whenever we paused, only for his warmth to chase it away, a cycle of sensation that kept me tethered to every moment.

Time seemed to stretch and bend, moments blurring into eternity as we moved together, finding a rhythm that was both new and achingly familiar. The intensity built slowly, then all at once, a crescendo that left us trembling in its wake.

Derek held me tight, his face buried in the crook of my neck, his breath hot and uneven against my skin as we came down together, the aftershocks rippling through us in tandem. I clung to him, my fingers threaded through his damp hair, my heart still pounding as if it might never slow, each beat a reminder of how alive I felt in his arms.

We stayed like that for a long time, tangled in each other and the sleeping bag, the air cooling around us as our breathing steadied. His hand moved lazily along my back, tracing idle patterns, a silent reassurance that he was still here, still with me. I pressed my cheek against his chest, listening to the steady thump of his heart, a sound I’d come to associate with safety, with home, during those long hospital vigils. Outside, the wind sighed through the trees, a low, mournful sound that seemed to carry the weight of the night, wrapping our fragile shelter in its embrace, as if guarding this moment from the inevitable dawn.

“Eleanor,” he murmured finally, his voice thick with exhaustion and something deeper, something content, as if a weight he’d carried for years had finally lifted. “You're mine.”

“Always,” I whispered back, the word settling into the space between us, a vow as binding as the ring on my finger. I shifted slightly, nestling closer, my body still humming with the echo of our closeness, my mind replaying every touch, every shift, every look, as if to preserve this night forever. The forest continued its quiet vigil, the stars indifferent to the transformation unfolding within this small, trembling tent.

But inside, wrapped in Derek’s arms, I felt a completeness I hadn’t known was possible—a certainty that, no matter what lay ahead in our life, we had this. We had us. And that was more than enough.
