Chapter 68
But after the door closed, his brows instantly furrowed tight, his face darkened with deep confusion.
That child called Oscar did indeed look extremely similar to William. In a trance, he seemed to truly see William as a child.
There are so many people in this world, and plenty who look alike, but to resemble each other to this extent - how could William and Oscar not be father and son?
However, in Clarence's memory, William had never been with a woman. Logically, William shouldn't have left behind a child.
What was going on?
After standing dazed for a few minutes, Clarence took out his phone, pulled up the variety show, and watched all the clips related to Oscar and Nina.
Suddenly, his gaze sharpened.
Because he saw a guest in the video.
That's right, it was William.
It was him!
He was really still alive!
How was this possible!
Clarence thought he was seeing things. He quickly took off his reading glasses, rubbed his eyes, and put them back on.
On his phone, William's face appeared clearly before Clarence's eyes - absolutely real, with no signs of being fake.
No, impossible!
Clarence's hand loosened, and his phone dropped to the floor.
His face turned deathly pale. He kept shaking his head, his body leaning backward until it hit the cold wall and stopped.
This was absolutely impossible!
How could William still be alive?
William was clearly dead!
For these past few months, there had been no news from William, and he hadn't shown his face either.
Never mind him - even William's parents had been immersed in grief all this time and still hadn't fully recovered.
If William were still alive, knowing his family was in such pain, how could he not come back?
This was a coincidence, it must be a coincidence!
But looking at that face that was identical to William's and so lifelike, Clarence couldn't convince himself.
He glanced at the nameplate on the judges' table, which clearly showed William's name.
Looking like William was one thing, but having the same name too - surely this couldn't be fake?
"Honey, what are you doing in there?"
Helena's voice came from outside the door. "Didn't you say you were going to work? Why did you lock the door? Hurry up and open it, I need to change clothes to go play poker!"
"My luck is good today, I'm sure to win several rounds!"
"Honey, why aren't you opening the door? Can't you hear me?"
Helena called out several times before Clarence snapped back to reality and opened the door.
Helena was startled. "Honey, why do you look so awful? What happened?"
"Nothing."
Clarence wiped the cold sweat from his forehead and steadied himself. "You go play poker. I need to go to work."
He grabbed his briefcase and left without looking back.
Helena was confused.
Looking at Clarence's pale face, this was really strange.
But she didn't think much of it, gathered her things, and left.
As soon as Clarence entered the Brown Group, he didn't go to his office or see anyone else. Instead, he called over Felix, a young assistant by his side, and they went to the restroom together.
He had figured out that when you want to discuss private matters, the restroom is the best place.
No one would install cameras or surveillance here - that would be illegal, and there was no need to install them in such a place anyway.
Clarence checked every stall to make sure the restroom was empty before instructing Felix to investigate the person who looked exactly like William.
Felix didn't understand. "You mean Mr. William Brown is still alive?"
"Very likely."
Clarence's heart was pounding. "I don't dare take that chance. Better to investigate thoroughly."
But Felix raised a question. "If Mr. William Brown is still alive, how could he not come home?"
He had other things he didn't say.
Previously, the entire Brown Group had been firmly in William's hands. William was the actual person in power of the Brown family.
Later, William had an accident and unfortunately died.
If William wasn't dead, why would he give up his power and hide under a false identity?
It made no sense at all!
"Enough, stop asking so many questions!"
Clarence waved his hand irritably. "Just do as I say. You must investigate thoroughly and carefully, don't miss anything, understand?"
"Yes." Felix nodded.
Only after Felix left did Clarence breathe a sigh of relief.
There were no such coincidences in this world. He had always believed William must be dead.
After the car accident, he had personally seen William's body and supervised the cremation. The entire process should have been foolproof.
Now, how had William appeared alive before his eyes?
If William hadn't died back then, where would he been all this time?
Why didn't William come home?
Or was William plotting something during these months away?
Too many questions filled Clarence's mind. He felt like his head was going to explode.
Forget it, don't think so much for now.
Wait for Felix to investigate and see what the situation really is.
After two days, Nina had mostly recovered.
She wasn't seriously hurt, just had some scrapes.
The doctor said Nina had been frightened and definitely had some psychological trauma, so these past two days Emily had pushed aside everything to focus on staying by Nina's side, not leaving her for a moment.
Maternal love is great. Nina was healed by Emily and even had rare smiles on her face.
Someone knocked on the door outside. Emily went to open it, but froze.
"Ms. Johnson, hello."
Standing outside was a strange man who looked to be in his forties, with thinning hair and a bald patch in the middle.
He flashed Emily an ingratiating smile. "Ms. Johnson, I finally found you! I didn't expect you to be so low-key, living in such a remote place, even though you've become so popular."
"But now, there's a new money-making opportunity right in front of you. Let's go inside and talk."
"Oh, right, I forgot to introduce myself. My name is Willie Reed."
"We're investing in a variety show, and I think you and your babies would be perfect for it. The show's name is..."
"Mr. Reed, I'm very sorry, but I don't want to participate in variety shows anymore."
Emily helplessly interrupted him. "Nina almost had an accident on one variety show. I feel so guilty toward her, so I want to spend quality time with her and don't want to think about anything else for now. Mr. Reed, please leave."
"Wait, Ms. Johnson! You haven't heard the specific terms yet!"
Willie quickly said, "I guarantee you'll be interested in our conditions. Even if you're not satisfied with anything, we can negotiate!"
"No need, Mr. Reed. Goodbye."
Emily's face wore a polite smile as she closed the door and returned to the bedroom, her movements flowing smoothly in one breath.
She let out a deep sigh.
In just two days, this was already the sixth director to approach her.
They all made the same request - hoping she would bring her children to continue appearing on variety shows.
