Chapter 290 Daniel's Confession
Chapter 290 Daniel's Confession
Scarlett turned to look at Ingrid. Although Ingrid's teasing words sounded harmless enough, they made Scarlett extremely uncomfortable. She sensed a hidden hostility.
Scarlett pressed her lips together, thinking about the rumors from Sunrise City that Daniel had mentioned earlier.
Theron was adopted to be Ingrid's fiancé—could Ingrid be jealous?
Scarlett had just been pulled down to sit by Maeve, who was very enthusiastic.
She'd been focused on talking with Maeve and hadn't really paid attention to her surroundings.
Scarlett only knew that Daniel had sat across from her, constantly pressuring her with his gaze, but remembering how he'd forced a kiss on her in the car, she didn't feel like acknowledging him.
But now, Scarlett felt restless and stuck in an awkward position.
She didn't want to be caught in the middle of other people's relationship drama. After hesitating, she said, "Maybe I should switch seats with Ms. Howard."
Scarlett didn't feel right asking Theron to change seats.
As Scarlett started to stand up, Maeve grabbed her right arm.
"Sophia, where are you going?"
And Theron reached out, pressing down on the back of Scarlett's chair.
The chair wouldn't budge, and with Maeve holding onto her, Scarlett couldn't stand up and settled back down firmly.
Theron turned to look at Ingrid. "Ingrid, Grandma wants to sit with Scarlett, so let's just make Grandma happy. Besides..."
Theron paused, his gaze sweeping toward Daniel.
"You might not know this, but Scarlett and Mr. Wilson are already separated."
Ingrid looked surprised. "How can that be? Mrs. Wilson's baby looks like it's due any day now."
Steven was also shocked, frowning at Daniel, his expression darkening slightly.
Steven had always admired Daniel—a young man with outstanding achievements, exceptional abilities, and a steady demeanor.
But to separate from Scarlett while she was pregnant—she was so vulnerable while pregnant, and to separate at this time, Daniel must have done something extremely wrong!
Steven, who had been a devoted family man and loving husband his whole life, looked down on irresponsible men with messy personal lives.
Maeve, holding onto Scarlett, immediately glared at Daniel.
"I knew it, Steven, he's bullying Sophia! Throw him out!"
Maeve said anxiously and angrily to Steven.
Steven patted Maeve's hand soothingly. "Don't worry, I'll have a good talk with him."
He looked at Daniel. "Mr. Wilson, don't think I'm being a busybody, but even though this is my first time meeting Scarlett, I've heard from Theron that Scarlett saved Ingrid and helped my wife today.
Just these two things show that Scarlett is such a gentle, kind, and soft-hearted young woman. Mr. Wilson, you're still young and don't realize how lucky you are! When your wife and child become a family with someone else in the future, it'll be too late for regrets!"
With one sentence from Theron, Daniel became the target of everyone's criticism.
Scarlett had only just met Steven and Maeve today, but their protection and concern for her warmed her heart deeply.
Even though all of this was because Maeve was confused and mistook Scarlett for the deceased Sophia, Scarlett still felt close to them and grateful.
Daniel had a cold temperament and had been in positions of power for years. He was the one who gave orders—when did others ever lecture him?
Usually only Magnolia could say a few words to him. Scarlett was afraid Daniel would give Steven and Maeve the cold shoulder and embarrass them.
She immediately looked at Daniel, but instead of showing any impatience or coldness on his handsome face, he smiled at Steven with humble courtesy, looking like a respectful younger person receiving instruction.
"Mr. Steven Howard, you're right. I did do things wrong before and hurt Scarlett's heart. I deeply regret it now. You're experienced in life, and your love story with Mrs. Maeve Howard is known even to people in Shadow City—it's truly enviable. Let me toast to you. Could you teach me?"
Daniel raised his glass. Steven, who had been a generous drinker during his business days, nodded and clinked glasses with Daniel.
"Good attitude, at least you're sensible."
After Daniel and Steven clinked glasses, their relationship seemed much closer, and Steven actually started sharing with Daniel the secrets of getting along as husband and wife.
Scarlett watched, somewhat stunned. She'd forgotten that the reason Daniel's Star Group had developed so well wasn't because Daniel couldn't handle social situations, but simply because he usually didn't need to bother winning anyone over.
Just then, Daniel suddenly looked over.
Their eyes met, and Daniel's thin lips curved slightly as he spoke.
"Mr. Howard, you're right. The key to a marriage is communication. That's what I lacked with Scarlett before, but separation doesn't mean the relationship is broken. I still care about her..."
Daniel's voice was deep and powerful. Speaking these words in front of everyone, he didn't seem embarrassed at all.
But Scarlett was mortified, wishing she could go over and cover his mouth.
Yet somehow, he easily stirred up waves in her heart.
She lowered her head, avoiding Daniel's burning gaze from across the table.
The curve at the corner of Daniel's lips deepened. Then his gaze shifted to Theron and Ingrid as he spoke.
"After just a brief conversation with Mr. Steven Howard, I've learned so much. With such role models to follow, Mr. Theron Howard and Ms. Ingrid Howard must have a wonderful relationship. When are you holding the wedding? Scarlett and I will definitely come to celebrate."
Theron met Daniel's cool gaze, his lips pressing slightly.
"Mr. Wilson seems to have misunderstood. Ingrid is my sister—what wedding are you talking about?
As for Mr. Wilson, that previous wedding caused quite a stir. I was on my way with a gift when I got word halfway that the wedding was cancelled. Such a shame. And some regrets can't be remedied or made up for, wouldn't you say, Mr. Wilson?"
That wedding was a pain Daniel never wanted to recall again.
The thought of it filled Daniel with regret. The pain and humiliation he'd caused Scarlett at the wedding couldn't be made up for—it was his greatest regret.
Now that Theron brought it up, the easy composure on Daniel's handsome face cracked bit by bit.
Daniel's handsome face darkened, but his eyes showed a hint of panic as he looked at Scarlett.
Scarlett kept her head down, serving food to Maeve, with no intention of helping Daniel out.
That wedding was also the deepest wound in Scarlett's heart, a barrier between them.
During this time, Daniel's attentiveness, pursuit, confessions, and attempts to make amends hadn't left Scarlett unmoved. Many times the wall she'd built around her heart had been on the verge of crumbling.
But when she thought of that wedding, all her courage turned to ash.
Daniel was the one who did it. Shadow City had been talking about it plenty lately—Theron's words were nothing compared to that.
The atmosphere froze for a moment. Daniel's fingers trembled slightly as he gripped his glass. He tilted his head back and drank the wine, his voice slightly hoarse.
"Mr. Howard is right. Some regrets can't be made up for, but the future is always more important than the past. Regrets also teach people to cherish things more!"
Hearing Daniel say he would cherish things more, Scarlett unconsciously twisted the tablecloth hanging down, her eyes misting over.
Just then, Ingrid suddenly exclaimed, "Mr. Wilson, you're hurt—you're bleeding."
Scarlett looked up to see a trace of blood at the corner of Daniel's lips.
It was clearly from where she'd bitten him in the car. Just now when he drank, his emotions slightly out of control, he'd unconsciously pressed the glass too hard against his lips, reopening the wound and causing it to bleed again.
Everyone knew what had happened at that spot before.
