Chapter 82 The Price of the Bloodline
Chapter 82 The Price of the Bloodline
Sandra
"Drop the weapon, Olivia, because you have completely run out of room to play your twisted games!"
My voice tore through the blinding white smoke of Sector 4, but the frantic beat of my heart was drowning out the sound of my own words. The interior of the central detonation vault was a living nightmare of green electrical fire and flashing alarms. The thick scent of sulfur and fried copper hung heavy in the air. Standing in the center of the destruction was my sister, her fingers gripping the smoking titanium revolver with a white-knuckled desperation that made her look completely unhinged.
It wasn't because of the blinking Sacrificial Lamb Protocol banner on the overhead monitors. It was because Alexander was stepping directly past my tactical shield, his massive, dominant frame moving into the line of fire without a single trace of hesitation.
"Stay back, Sandra," Alexander growled, his voice dropping into that familiar, low, gravelly vibration that usually made me feel entirely protected. His dark eyes were fixed on Olivia, his hand extended to shield our bleeding grandfather, who was slumped sideways in his broken wheelchair. "Olivia, your fight is with me and the Draken board. Leave her mother's legacy out of this."
"Her legacy?" Olivia shrieked, her cynical, manic laughter bouncing off the reinforced steel walls of the sub-harbor terminal. She shifted her stance, the barrel of the revolver jerking wildly between Alexander's chest and the empty spaces of the vault. "She stole my husband! She stole my billion-dollar contract! And now she thinks she can use our mother's chemical ink signature to lock me out of the family trust? I am the firstborn! I am the one who was supposed to be the queen!"
"You ran from the altar, Olivia!" I yelled, my fingers frantically tapping a secondary wireless bypass on my handheld console. My witty, defensive facade was completely gone, replaced by a raw, unfiltered terror that I hadn't felt since the day I lifted my wedding veil. "You partnered with Lucas to destroy the municipal grid! Look at the monitor behind you! The system is using your biological profile as a fuel source for the automated purge! Marcus set a trap for all of us, and you walked right into it!"
Lucas was crumpled on the floor near the master console, unconscious and bleeding from a head wound where Olivia had apparently struck him with the butt of the gun. The rival CEO had fallen for our treasonous play, but the victory was turning into an absolute disaster. The automated drones bearing the gold-leaf crest were still humming in the shadows, their targeting lasers scanning the room for the final authorization signature.
"I don't care about the grid!" Olivia roared, her finger tightening on the trigger as she leveled the gun directly at Marcus's chest. "If I am going down, I am erasing the foundation from the root directory! I will kill him, and then I will watch your precious Chairman bleed out in the dark!"
"Olivia, don't!" I screamed.
The world seemed to slow down into a series of fractured, agonizing seconds. Olivia’s eyes flashed with a final, lethal hatred, and she pulled the trigger.
The roar of the titanium revolver was deafening inside the enclosed concrete vault. But before the supersonic round could strike the frail, slumped body of my grandfather, Alexander lunged forward. His large body became a literal shield, throwing itself across the front of the wheelchair to absorb the impact.
A sharp, metallic tearing sound echoed through the smoke as the bullet grazed the top of Alexander's right shoulder. The high-caliber round ripped through his heavy tactical jacket, slicing a deep, crimson gash across his skin before embedding itself into the steel wall behind him. The force of the impact spun him around, sending him crashing heavily to one knee against the hard concrete floor.
"Alexander!"
The scream tore from my throat before my brain could even process the action. The cold, logical, cynical persona I had spent months building to protect myself from the Draken family cage completely shattered into a million useless pieces. I didn't care about the Alpha-X codes. I didn't care about the corporate shares, the municipal power grid, or the multi-generational blood debt that had brought us to this basement. My unfiltered internal thoughts were a chaotic explosion of panic and absolute devotion.
I can't lose him, I realized, the truth hitting me with a magnetic, crushing force that redefined my entire existence. He isn't my contract husband. He isn't my business partner. He is my life.
I abandoned the safety of the heavy tactical shield, running directly into the clearing smoke toward his fallen frame. I threw myself down onto the concrete beside him, my hands shaking violently as I gripped his uninjured shoulder, pulling his massive chest against mine. The warm, thick scent of his blood was hitting my senses, mixing with the metallic ozone of the vault.
"Sandra... get back," he gasped, his teeth gritting in agonizing pain as he tried to push me away with his left arm. His dominant posture was still trying to assert itself, but his bloodshot eyes were wide with a fierce, attractive anxiety for my safety. "She... she still has the weapon."
"I don't care!" I sobbed openly, my face burying against his neck for a single, desperate fraction of a second, feeling the rapid, frantic pounding of his pulse. The attractive connection between us had never been sweeter, nor had it ever been more terrifyingly exposed. We had successfully defeated Arthur, but the price of our victory was being written in his blood. "Look at me, Alexander! Stay with me!"
Olivia stared at us, her hands trembling as she looked down at the smoking gun, a sudden flicker of naive horror crossing her face as she realized she had actually shot the Chairman of Draken Global. She took a staggered step backward, her back slamming against the flashing red display of the master control unit.
"I... I didn't mean to hit you, Alexander," she whispered, her voice cracking as the manic energy began to drain from her posture, leaving behind only the desperate, broken girl who had ruined her own future. "It was supposed to be her. She was the one who was supposed to pay."
"The extraction team is already in the upper corridor," Alexander muttered, his voice a low, gravelly vibration against my collarbone as he forced himself back up onto his feet, his left hand gripping my waist to keep me anchored to his side. His inner core remained completely unbroken, his eyes locking onto Olivia with a freezing, absolute finality. "Drop the gun, Olivia. It's over."
I rose with him, my tablet instantly syncing back with the central terminal as the green electrical fire began to subside under the automated cooling spray. We were standing together against the world, our bloodlines mixed on the floor of the ultimate trap.
The heavy medical syringe filled with the deep blue fluid suddenly fell from Olivia’s frozen fingers, shattering against the concrete floor directly beneath Marcus's slumped wheelchair.
But as the fluid pooled around the metallic wheels, the empty, paralyzed hand of my grandfather suddenly twitched, his long, skeletal fingers dropping down to press a manual override toggle hidden on the underside of his armrest. "You think she's your wife, Alexander?" Marcus whispered, his head slowly rising as his eyes opened, completely clear and devoid of any medical trauma, staring at me with a terrifying, triumphant malice.
The master screen above our heads instantly cleared its red warning labels, flashing a brand-new, unencrypted legal document dated twenty years ago that bore my mother's signature alongside a secondary biological marker.
"She isn't the successor to the Eleanor line, grandson... your sister Olivia was the match for the Alpha-X system, and by letting Sandra's blood touch the console during your little rescue sequence, you just initialized the global eradication of the secondary strain from the central server.”
