Chapter 302 Five-Year Promise, Spend a Night with Him
Chapter 302 Five-Year Promise, Spend a Night with Him
Late at night.
James had been waiting in the living room for a long time, staring at Chris.
Chris was unsettled by his presence, a quiet hostility rising within him. James seemed to sense it and returned a cold, piercing glare. "What are you looking at, stupid cat!"
Almost as if he could understand him, Chris lunged at him. James placed his palm on his head in a bid to keep him at bay.
Caspian saw the commotion brewing between the man and the tiger at the staircase landing.
He called out softly, "James."
When James heard his name he quickly let go of Chris. As soon as Chris was freed he growled and bit James calf.
Unfortunately, he was just a month old and hadn't grown his baby teeth yet.
James sneered, "Besides getting my leg covered in drool, what else can you do?"
Chris scratched at the carpet with his claws, clearly not backing down.
Seeing Caspian, he quickly ran to his side.
But Caspian grabbed him by the scruff and tossed him aside. "Get lost."
James noticed Caspian had changed into loungewear and carried the scent of rose-scented body wash.
He noticed he had been upstairs for over an hour and he wondered what man spent that much time washing up. He could only guess what James had been doing during that period.
He kept telling himself to let go, to stop thinking about it, that being a silent observer protecting her and the child was enough.
But how could he control his thoughts?
The same thing had happened when Gloria had agreed to the divorce. His mind replayed their past repeatedly.
Matters of the heart weren't like other things that could be controlled through self-discipline.
James could even picture the heated scene between Caspian and Gloria in the bathroom. She was so sweet, so tempting—what man could resist?
Caspian poured a glass of warm water and handed it to him. "James, sorry to keep you waiting."
James sipped the water slowly, he could barely control how he felt inside.
"It's fine. Is she asleep?"
"Just fell asleep."
James's fingertips traced the glass. "Tell me about you and Milo. What exactly happened back then?"
"You've probably already guessed. He offered eighty million dollars a year to keep Gloria for three years. She refused. I happened to notice something was off with her that day and found out about it, so I stepped in to deal with Milo on her behalf."
He made it sound casual, but James didn't believe it so easily.
"What do you mean by 'deal with'?"
"Roulette."
James's expression shifted slightly. That meant gambling with his life! Seeing if there was a bullet in the gun—completely random.
"You hadn't even been in contact with her then. Behind the Throne wasn't filmed until the second year. Why? You could have died that night, and Gloria and I wouldn't have even known what you did."
Caspian's lips curved slightly. "If I was doing it for payback, James, I wouldn't have waited until this year to help her."
James gripped the water glass tightly and finally lowered his head. "Caspian, I'm not as good as you."
Not in his love for Gloria, nor as a person.
Caspian was a gentleman with good value.
"Weren't you scared then?"
Caspian smiled. "If I was scared, I wouldn't have gone to the battlefield. I've brushed past death countless times."
Perhaps because he was born with everything, he had no desires.
He came into this world seemingly to experience more of life.
No one knew that the man born with a silver spoon was the most efficient killer in that mysterious unit.
He was only 15 that year.
No one knew his true identity, only his code name "Phantom."
Enemy forces called him "Phantom Demon." Countless people died by his hand.
He wasn't afraid of death. Someone who came out of the killing fields was calmer and more composed than ordinary people.
He and James, with his unstable emotions, were polar opposites.
Someone like him had never wanted to get involved in romance.
Back then, he only helped Gloria secretly, without even meeting her.
Seeing her devastated state, he didn't think much of it. After all, with money and power, protecting someone was simple. Milo would respect him.
It was his first time meeting someone as crazy as Milo. At their first meeting, Milo wanted to gamble his life with Caspian.
One heir to the Knight family, one heir to the Rivers family.
Even though his feelings for Gloria at that time couldn't even be called love, the madness in his bones was identical to Milo's.
When leaving, Milo laughed wildly. "There's no woman in this world I can't have. I respect you—five years. I won't touch her."
As time went by, Caspian did not acknowledge the matter, he felt it was not worth mentioning.
But today when Gloria said she saw Milo, he remembered what that man said about five years.
And now was different from then—Gloria had become his wife.
That's why Caspian was on high alert.
"He said five years, and Gloria is already your wife. Does he still not want to let go?"
Caspian's brow furrowed. "Milo is a lunatic, bloodthirsty and violent. He doesn't even value his own life. It's not that he likes Gloria so much—it was just a whim. I never thought that after five years, he'd still remember this."
James's eyes turned ice cold. "What exactly does he want? Gloria is already married."
Caspian said, "He wants Gloria to spend one night with him."
James slammed the glass on the table. The glass shattered , startling Chris who had dozed off.
Chris was upset and nibbled James' leg causing no harm.
Caspian said calmly, "James, you're too impulsive. You need to work on that temper."
When it came to Gloria, James easily lost his rationality. Hearing such offensive words from the other party, he couldn't help his emotional reaction.
"Sorry." James was extremely agitated inside.
He could accept Caspian being with Gloria because Caspian deserved it.
But what was Milo? Did he deserve to touch Gloria?
"Keeping someone like this around is a threat. Only if he disappears completely will Gloria be safe."
Caspiangot what he tried to infer. He looked calm, staring at the water flowing on the table. "You think I haven't thought of that? What kind of person is Milo? Many people want him dead. How many have the guts? Even those with guts would probably be killed before getting close to him."
"Isn't he afraid of the Rivers family and the Taylor Family going after him together?"
"James, to be blunt, if it came to an open confrontation, what would we have to fear? You know his background. If he uses dirty tactics against us, we can't guard against everything."
"He has plenty of ways to cause trouble in the shadows. If something happens to Gloria, we might not even be able to trace it back to him. The Knight family has the Owens Family behind them. If we attack him in the name of our families, we'll only drag the Taylor Family and the Rivers family into mutual destruction."
"There's only one way to deal with a lunatic like this—you have to be crazier than him."
"So what are you planning to do?"
Caspian's expression remained unchanged. "I made an appointment with him for a competition in seven days. If I win, he'll let go."
"What did you agree on?"
"Car racing."
James instinctively refused. "No way. In the dead of winter, with freezing temperatures, it's too dangerous. There must be a better way. Worst case, we all go down together."
"Don't worry, James. He's competing himself, so it's fair. If I didn't think I could win, I wouldn't have accepted the challenge."
Never mind car racing—Caspian could even handle fighter jets.
James saw a flash of confidence cross Caspian's face, just like before when he told him with certainty that he wanted Gloria.
"He wants to play, I'll play with him to the end."
Gloria hadn't been sleeping, she stood quietly at the top of the stairs and overhead the entire conversation.
Caspian had been dodging the issue with her because he didn't want her to worry.
But the unknown was what worried her most. How could Gloria let him bear everything alone?
Seven days left.
Gloria's face was filled with tension.
Was there a better way to solve this?
She touched her belly, thinking, 'Baby, what should Mommy do?'
