Chapter 299 Caspian Is Gambling With His Life, Gloria Is Devastated!

Gloria's casual words hurt James. He got a taste of Gloria's past experience, even while they were within the warmth of the car.

How helpless must she have been that night?

He spoke in a low voice: "Why didn't you tell me?"

Gloria didn't want to rehash the past with him. She pressed against the window, watching as the black business car gradually drove away.

Joseph was right—this was Silverlake Springs. Caspian had two families backing him. Never mind the Rivers family in Crystalbrook, just Hawk's status alone meant Milo wouldn't dare do anything to Caspian.

Caspian had always been calm and composed, from the very moment Gloria had met him.

He'd never for once lost his cool, not even when he had to deal with James.

He was so calm and commanding, like a chess player who always had everything under control.

But every nerve in his body had been on edge today while he face Milo.

Gloria had a hard time accepting his protection now, not when he of all people found this particular person quite tricky to deal with.

James felt the exact way right then. "Were you fine because of the help Caspian had rendered you afterwards while you were behind the scenes?"

Gloria closed her eyes. "Yes."

He had done far more than she and James had imagined.

James felt the resentment he had been holding on to slowly fade away.
He had thought he was the only one who loved Gloria deeply, but Caspian's love ran deeper, was even greater than his own.

Not only had Caspian not taken Gloria away, he'd been quietly protecting her and helping James advance in his career.

His selfless love for Gloria made James feel guilty.

James finally got what Caspian had really meant when he said, "If I'd wanted her, she would've been my wife four years ago."

Getting Gloria would have been easy for him.

James looked at Gloria's profile as she worried about Caspian, and tried to comfort her: "Caspian knows what he's doing. He'll be fine."

Gloria clutched her coat tightly and hummed in acknowledgement.

When they arrived at Sunset Meadows, Joseph opened the car door for Gloria. As soon as she got out, Joseph said coldly: "Mrs. Rivers, stay home and don't go anywhere. I'm heading out."

Joseph, who always drove steadily, was driving faster than Gloria had ever seen.

He kept telling her not to worry about Caspian, but his every expression and movement was saying one thing—Caspian was in danger!

Back inside, Gloria paced back and forth. Several times she wanted to call Isabella.

But Joseph's words in the car reminded her that Caspian didn't want everyone to know, didn't want to make a big deal of it. He wanted to handle it privately.

But how would he handle it?

The more curious she was, the more worried she became.

James warmed her a glass of milk. "Don't worry, you're still pregnant. Drink some milk and get some rest."

Gloria was about to answer when her brow furrowed and her expression changed.

James got scared and quickly put down the glass to support her. "What's wrong?"

Gloria held her belly. "The baby."

Sweat beaded on James's forehead as he helped her sit down. "What about the baby?"

The last miscarriage had left James traumatized too.

Even though the baby in Gloria's belly was Caspian's, he wouldn't let anything happen to her today.

Caspian could risk everything to protect him and Gloria, so he could do the same to protect his wife and child.

Seeing James already pulling out his phone, ready to either take Gloria to the hospital or call a family doctor depending on the situation.

Gloria pressed his hand. "I'm fine..."

The baby in her belly was already past four months. Unlike Oscar's movements at three months, she'd just felt something small bump against her uterine wall.

The movement wasn't big, but she definitely felt it.

Generally, fetal movements become more obvious between four and five months.

Maybe her emotions had affected the little one, making the baby restless too.

James had read plenty of materials in private. Seeing no pain on Gloria's face, he realized it wasn't a stomachache—it was fetal movement.

To hide her secret, Gloria hadn't taken off her coat when she got home, which happened to cover her belly.

James stared at her abdomen. At this moment, he was so close to the child.

How he wanted to reach out and touch the baby, to feel its presence.

But he'd long lost that right.

He could only let go of Gloria and go along with what she said. "Good that you're okay. Don't get too stressed and disturb the baby. Caspian will be fine. I had John follow them—let me contact John and ask."

Gloria's eyes lit up. "Okay, hurry."

She wanted so badly to call Caspian directly, but was afraid of interfering.

If everything was fine, he would definitely contact her on his own.

James's suggestion was exactly what she wanted.

As he dialed, Gloria gently stroked her belly. "Baby, be good. I'm sorry, Mommy is too worried about Daddy."

Hearing the word "Daddy," James's fingers stiffened.

He pressed the call button, and Gloria immediately looked at him.

"How is it?"

"No signal, can't get through."

Gloria stood up again. "How can there be no signal?"

Her mind went back to the last time Caspian had been beaten so badly, his back covered in wounds, yet he hadn't made a sound of complaint on the phone.

Gloria couldn't rest easy. James watched her while saying: "Don't panic. Even though I can't reach John, he sent me a location before losing signal."

Originally he hadn't wanted to tell Gloria, afraid it would upset her.

But now Gloria's condition was even worse. The unknown was the greatest fear.

Gloria asked: "Where?"

James's expression showed some reluctance. Gloria stepped forward, her expression pleading: "Tell me, please?"

James's thin lips uttered a few words: "Pikes Peak."

Hearing those words, Gloria froze on the spot.

She'd heard gossip in the entertainment industry about rich kids who liked to race cars at Pikes Peak.

The roads there had many sharp turns and were extremely dangerous.

The celebrity who'd told the story had gone pale talking about it, saying they'd never go again no matter how much money they were offered, afraid they wouldn't live to spend it.

And this was the dead of winter!

Racing now was practically a death wish.

No wonder Joseph said there was no need to notify Isabella—because Caspian had already made his decision.

She also understood the sentence Milo had been interrupted from finishing.

Five years ago, Caspian had bet his life against him!

By refusing directly, she'd slapped Milo in the face, and maybe he was going to come after her then.

Caspian had gone to negotiate, and that lunatic had played a life-or-death game with him.

Caspian had won, which was why she'd been safe and sound ever since.

No wonder Caspian hadn't let James get involved. Like her, James had never played those rich people's games. He didn't know racing.

Gloria grabbed the car keys and headed for the door. James grabbed her. "Gloria, you're still pregnant. He wouldn't want you to go."

He paused, his eyes full of worry as he said quietly: "I don't want you to either. You and the baby can't handle any more setbacks."

If she miscarried again, it would do serious damage to her body. She might never be able to get pregnant again.

Gloria's eyes reddened. She clutched James's sleeve. "What should I do?"

Her voice trembled with a tearful tone as she looked at James helplessly: "Tell me, what can I do? What can I do for him?"
