"Mr Freeman, this is doctor Bee. She is representing her hospital today. When it comes to the heart and all sorts of chest surgeries, she will tell you all you need to know." With pride, Ryan introduced Brooke to the mayor, Logan Freeman. "She can tell you all about the hospital's achievements over the years." He added.
Logan Freeman was an attractive looking man. He is young and single. His wife died a few years ago. At thirty nine years, he still looks younger than his age. He has similar features to that of Ryan. They are the same height as well.
With a frown that looked more like that of confusion, the mayor asked. "You are Doctor Bee?" He looked shocked at the knowledge of who Brooke is.
"Yes, mayor. I am Doctor Brooke Turner. But most people call me Doctor Bee for short." She answered. But she felt awkward at how the mayor was studying her closely.
"I guess our good doctor here is more famous than I thought." Ryan said with a little chuckle, trying to get the attention of the mayor away from Brooke. It seems to work because he turned to look at Ryan.
"I am sorry... I had the impression that you were a man." The mayor said with a smile. "I have to say, our famous doctor here is really beautiful. It is nice to meet you, Doctor Bee." He added.
Brooke was turning red on the cheeks. It is not everyday you get a compliment from a mayor. "Thank you, Mr Mayor. It is nice to meet you too." Brooke replied. "I understand you want to invest in medical facilities this time."
"Ah yes. Due to a friend's condition, I want to invest in a hospital that focuses on heart treatment." The mayor said.
"Heart treatment is our speciality as we have it." Brooke proudly said. "In fact, I could say we are one of the best and most sought after in the city." She was about to continue when the mayor stopped her by excusing himself.
"I am so sorry, Doctor Bee. I have to talk to someone now. It is very important. But I promise to be back." The mayor said before disappearing in the crowd.
"Well, that didn't go as I hoped." Brooke said with a worried tone.
"Oh don't worry Bee, you will get another chance." Ryan encouraged her.
The two went around at the party for a while. And as the mayor promised, Brooke got another chance to talk with him. This time around, she was invited to a private room at the end of a hall. It is in the same building where the party was happening.
There, Brooke was able to talk about all the achievements of their hospital.
"Doctor Bee, I got to say, I am impressed. But from what I have heard, some of these achievements were yours." The mayor said. "You must be talented, Doctor Bee."
"Thank you, Mr. Mayor. Although this all happened because more patients needed surgery recently." Brooke tried to be modest.
"So in this hospital, are you the only doctor that is capable of doing a heart transplant?" The mayor asked.
"There is my father, Doctor Turner and Doctor Patel. They have been leading the heart surgery before me. I just began leading recently." Brooke replied. "Although we have some doctors that have been assisting in the procedure. I am sure with a little help here and there, they will be able to perform the same surgery soon."
"That is good to know. It is a good thing that the hospital has more than one good surgeon that can perform such a complex surgery." The mayor said.
They continued to chat about hospitals and what not. The mayor then suddenly asked Brooke.
"Doctor Bee, are you married?"
"I am not. Well, I used to be, but I am divorced now." Brooke said.
"I am sorry to hear that but that is his loss, clearly." The mayor said. "If opportunity allows, we might meet again and I would like to take you out for dinner. Just us two." He added, very straightforward.
Brooke was rendered speechless for a few seconds at his straightforward attitude. Even though she has gotten different invites and clear interest from other men. At work and elsewhere, but this is an influential person. He is the mayor.
"I am not sure that would be a good idea, Mr. Mayor." Brooke tried to reject the offer in the nicest way possible. "I mean I am a single mother to a son and you are -"
"Kids are not a problem to me. I love kids." The mayor interrupted her. He gave her a small smile. His phone began to ring and he reached for it. "I am sorry, doctor Bee, I have to take this call. You may return to the party." He suggested.
"Oh.... Of course. It was nice talking to you, Mr. Mayor." She got up from where she was sitting. She gave him a small smile and excused herself out of the room.
Before she closed the door behind her, she heard a little of the mayor's conversation.
"Listen to me. There has been a change of plans. That is an order-" the mayor said into the phone.
Brooke felt a bit guilty for eavesdropping on the Mayor's conversation. Or so she thought she did. So she closed the door and began to walk away.
She could see Ryan waiting for her at the far end of the hall, which would lead her back to the party. But Ryan had his back to her so he didn't see her coming.
He was talking with a lady, who seemed to make eye contact with Brooke briefly. Before she turned her attention to Ryan again.
Brooke was a few meters away from them. She began to walk towards them. But from nowhere, she felt a hand wrapped around her mouth with the use of a cloth. Then the same person pulled her with force backwards as she tried to fight out of the hold.
"Mmmmmm...... Mmmmmm!" Brooke tried to get Ryan's attention. But he couldn't hear her as she was getting weak by the second. But at that moment, she noticed something strange. The lady talking to Ryan, began to get louder with her laughter. That was after she made eye contact with Brooke at the moment that Bee was trying to ask for help. The lady then looked away.
'What was that? Did she not see me in the situation I am in?' Brooke thought.
