Chapter 382: The Bonfire Initiative

Chapter 382: The Bonfire Initiative
Sophie's POV

The bus finally rolled to a stop at Birchfield, and everyone practically stampeded out, desperate to wash away the grime from our fish-selling adventure.

I had just stepped off the bus when a familiar figure came racing toward us, a cat carrier swinging wildly in his hand. Jason, Adam's childhood friend, was sprinting across the village square like he was being chased.

"Foster! Sophie!" he called out, waving enthusiastically.

"Jason?" Adam asked, his voice a mixture of confusion and suspicion. "What are you doing here?"

Jason finally reached us, slightly out of breath but grinning from ear to ear. He held up the cat carrier, and I could see Pippin's little face peering out curiously.

"Your cat's been miserable without you, Adam," Jason explained, still catching his breath. "Wouldn't eat, kept meowing at the door. I thought bringing him might help."

I stepped forward and took the carrier from Jason, peering inside at the little ball of fluff. "Hey there, Pippin," I cooed. The kitten meowed in response, looking perfectly healthy and well-fed.

"How's Alayna doing?" I asked, glancing up at Jason. "I've been worried about her."

"She's great! Absolutely thriving," Jason assured me. "And Chase has been at the Agate mansion, learning the ropes from William. Your grandfather-in-law has really taken him under his wing."

I turned to Adam, who was watching our exchange with an unreadable expression. "Don't be jealous," I teased. "It's good that Chase is stepping up."

Adam's jaw tightened slightly. "I'm not jealous. I just..." He trailed off, then admitted quietly, "I should have been more attentive to Alayna. Chase is doing better than I did."

The vulnerability in his voice caught me off guard. Before I could respond, Jovan emerged from the production tent, freshly changed and looking much more comfortable.

"Jason?" he exclaimed, recognition dawning on his face. "Jason Gates? What on earth are you doing here?"

Jason smiled broadly. "Just delivering Foster's cat. The little guy was missing him." He glanced around at the camera equipment. "Say, you guys need any help around here? I could stick around for a few days, have some fun."

Jovan still looked a bit disoriented from the bus ride. "What can you do?"

"I'm a great lighting guy," Jason said without missing a beat. "Got my equipment in the car. I can make everyone look like movie stars."

Jovan considered this for a moment, then shrugged. "We could use an extra hand with the lighting. You're hired."

Jason pumped his fist in victory, and I couldn't help but smile at his enthusiasm. By this time, the other contestants had finished freshening up and were emerging from their quarters, curious about the newcomer.

"Everyone," Jovan announced, "this is Jason Gates. He'll be joining our crew as a lighting specialist."

Jason waved cheerfully at the group. "I'll make sure you all look fabulous on camera. Perfect lighting guaranteed!"

The contestants seemed charmed by Jason's easygoing manner. I overhead Dashiell whisper to Eldric, "Seems like a nice guy. Probably some rich kid looking for a taste of real work."

Celestia, ever the social climber, sauntered over to Jason with her most dazzling smile. "Hi there, I'm Celestia Dove."

Jason took one look at her, then dramatically covered his nose and stepped backward. "Whoa, big sis, your perfume is WAY too strong. It's so sweet it actually stinks!"

Celestia's smile froze on her face. The entire group fell silent, watching this unexpected interaction.

Nora, seeing an opportunity to gain an ally, sidled up to Jason. "Don't worry about it. Celestia does tend to overdo the perfume. I'm Nora, by the way."

Jason immediately backed away from her too. "You also smell like you bathed in perfume," he said, wrinkling his nose. "What is it with you actresses?"

Nora's friendly expression crumpled, and the rest of the contestants wisely decided against introducing themselves to Jason.

---

As evening approached, we all gathered on the outskirts of the village where the crew had set up for the promised bonfire party. I spotted Adam standing alone near the edge of the clearing and made my way toward him.

"Hey," I said softly, coming to stand beside him. "What's the plan?"

Adam's eyes scanned the village thoughtfully. "I need to look around, figure out what's really going on here. Something doesn't feel right about this place."

I nodded, feeling the same unease. "I want to come with you."

Adam shook his head firmly. "Too dangerous. I can blend in better alone. If something happens to me, at least you'll be safe."

I wanted to argue, but the determination in his eyes made me hesitate. "Be careful," I finally conceded. "Promise me you'll come back."

"I promise," he said, his voice low and serious.

We made our way to the grassy area where many villagers had already gathered around a massive bonfire. The flames leapt high into the darkening sky, casting long shadows across the ground.

Jovan pulled Jasper aside as we approached. "Try not to say anything too... Jasper-like tonight," he warned. "We don't want to offend the locals."

Jasper looked offended but nodded reluctantly.

"Alright, everyone!" Jovan called out cheerfully. "This is your reward for a job well done today. Enjoy the bonfire party, mingle with the locals, have fun!"

We joined the dancing, moving around the fire with the villagers while keeping our eyes open for anything unusual. The music grew louder, the dancing more frenzied, and soon villagers began taking ashes from the fire's edge and playfully smudging each other's faces with them.

"This is my chance," Adam murmured in my ear. "Stay with Luke. I'll be back."

Before I could respond, he grabbed a handful of ash, smeared it across his face, and hunched his shoulders. With his features obscured and his posture altered, he blended into the crowd and slipped away into the darkness.

The festivities around the bonfire grew increasingly chaotic. Several villagers approached me with handfuls of ash, eager to mark my face as part of their tradition. Luke tried to shield me, but there were too many people.

"Jason!" Luke called out, spotting him nearby. "Help me protect Sophie!"

Jason immediately pushed through the crowd to join us, forming a protective barrier around me. But the chaos was escalating by the minute.

Through the swirling bodies and flickering firelight, I spotted Bodhi, the village doctor, approaching with a large wooden stick. The look in his eyes sent a jolt of alarm through me. He wasn't coming to dance—he was positioning himself to swing at my legs when no one was looking.

On the other side, Nora was holding a burning stick, the sparks dangerously close to my face. Her smile didn't reach her eyes as she moved closer.

Even Cassian had ash-blackened hands and was trying to get close enough to give me his "blessing," though his intentions seemed less malicious than opportunistic.

I tensed, preparing to defend myself. As I turned to dodge Bodhi, I saw Nora lunging forward with her sparking stick. Before it could touch my face, Cassian's hand shot out and blocked it.

"AHHH!" he screamed as the spark burned his palm. His face contorted with rage as he whirled on Nora. "You burned me, you crazy bitch!" He kicked out, catching her in the shin. "You're going to pay for this! Do you know how much a hand model makes? This could cost me thousands!"
