Chapter 64

Chapter 64
I walked through the front door of my home, exhausted but triumphant after the day's events. I had stood up for myself and proven my worth as the acting CEO. I was looking forward to a quiet evening at home, maybe a glass of wine and a good book.

But as I entered the living room, I saw my mother-in-law, sitting on the couch, her eyes fixed on me with a stern expression.

"Lilith, we need to talk," she said, her voice firm but controlled.

I felt a sense of trepidation wash over me. What have I done now?

"Mother, what's this about?" I asked, trying to sound calm.

"Marco called me," she said, her eyes narrowing. "He told me about your little stunt during the presentation. Making him look like a fool in front of the board?"

I felt a surge of defensiveness. "I didn't make him look like a fool, mother. I simply stood up for myself and proved my worth as the acting CEO."

She snorted. "You think you're so clever, don't you? But you have no idea the damage you've done. Marco is furious, and now he's more determined than ever to take you down."

I felt a shiver run down my spine. I knew Marco was dangerous, but I had never thought he would involve my family.

"Mother, please understand," I said, trying to reason with her. "I had to stand up for myself. I couldn't let Marco walk all over me."

But she just shook her head. "You're so naive, Lilith. You think you can play with the big boys and win? You're just a pawn in his game, and you're going to get hurt."

I felt a stinging sensation in my eyes as tears began to form. Why was mother siding with Marco? Didn't she believe in me?

"Mother, please," I said, my voice cracking. "I'm trying my best. I just want to do what's right for this company."

Her face was red with anger as she yelled at me, her voice echoing off the walls. "You're so greedy, Lilith! You're only thinking of yourself and your own power trip! Leave the CEO position to Marco, he's the one who deserves it!"

I felt my own anger rising, my glare intensifying as I looked at her "How dare you," I hissed. "This position belongs to Xavier, not Marco. And I'm barely helping him out until he returns."

Her expression turned condescending. "Oh, poor Lilith, always playing the victim. You're not fooling anyone with your little act. You're just trying to hold onto power and control."

I took a step closer to her, my voice low and even. "I'm not trying to hold onto anything, mother. I'm just trying to do what's best for this company. And if you can't see that, then maybe you're the one who's blind."

Her face turned red with rage, and for a moment, I thought she might actually physically attack me. But then, she seemed to regain control of herself, her expression twisting into a sneer. "You're just a selfish, power-hungry little girl, Lilith. And you're going to ruin this company with your incompetence."

I felt a stinging sensation in my eyes, but I refused to let her see me cry. Instead, I stood tall, my glare never wavering. "I'm not going to let you bully me, mother. I'm the acting CEO, and I'm going to do what's best for this company, no matter what you say."

Her expression suddenly changed, and she smiled sweetly at me. But it wasn't a warm or kind smile - it was a cold, calculating one that sent shivers down my spine.

"Oh, Lilith," she said, her voice dripping with malice. "You really are so naive. You think you can take on Marco and win? Ha! He will snatch everything you ever loved in this world from you. Your precious CEO position, your beautiful home, your loving husband... everything."

She took a step closer to me, her eyes glinting with triumph. "And sooner or later, you will be thrown out of this mansion, left with nothing but the clothes on your back. You'll be begging for scraps from the table you once sat at."

I felt a wave of fear wash over me, but I tried to stand my ground. I couldn't let her see me tremble. But inside, I was quaking with dread. How could she be so cruel? Didn't she care about her own son's happiness?

"You're just trying to scare me, mother," I said, trying to sound braver than I felt. "But it won't work. I'm not going to back down."

She chuckled, a cold, mirthless sound. "Oh, Lilith. You're so predictable. You think you're strong, but you're just a weak little girl playing at being a CEO. Marco will crush you, and I'll be there to watch it happen."

With that, she turned and walked away, leaving me feeling shaken and vulnerable. I knew I had to be strong, but her words had struck a chord. What if she was right? What if Marco did take everything from me? I pushed the thoughts aside and tried to focus on the present moment. I couldn't let her get to me. I had to keep fighting.

I walked into my room, exhausted from the confrontation with mother, and was met with an unwelcome surprise. Marco was sitting on my bed, his eyes fixed on me with an unnerving intensity. I sighed, feeling a sense of unease wash over me.

"What are you doing in my room, Marco?" I asked, trying to keep my tone neutral.

Marco folded his arms across his chest, his expression unyielding. "I wanted to have a little chat with you, Lilith," he said, his voice dripping with condescension.

I felt a shiver run down my spine as I approached him. What did he want now? Couldn't he just leave me alone?

"Can't it wait?" I asked, trying to sound nonchalant despite the growing unease in my chest.

Marco chuckled, a cold, mirthless sound. "Oh, no, Lilith. This can't wait. You see, I've been thinking... and I've come to the realization that you're a much bigger threat to my plans than I initially thought."

My heart raced as I processed his words. What plans? What was he talking about?

"Marco, I don't know what you're talking about," I said, trying to feign ignorance.

Marco's eyes narrowed. "Don't play dumb, Lilith. I know all about your little scheme to take over the company. And let me tell you, it's not going to work."

I felt a surge of anger at his accusations, but I knew I had to keep my cool. I couldn't let Marco get under my skin.

"Marco, I don't know what you're talking about," I repeated, trying to sound calm.

Marco's expression turned menacing. "We'll see about that, Lilith. We'll see about that."

Marco's smile grew wider as he handed me a stack of papers. "Just a little something I need you to sign, Lilith," he said, his eyes glinting with triumph.

I took the papers, my heart racing as I scanned the contents. Transfer of properties. Transfer of company. My eyes widened in horror as I realized what Marco was trying to do.

"No," I said, my voice firm. "I won't sign these."

Marco's smile faltered for a moment, but he quickly regained his composure. "Oh, I think you will," he said, his voice dripping with malice. "You see, Lilith, you're not as powerful as you think you are. And I have the upper hand here."

I felt a surge of anger and defiance as I looked at the papers. I knew what I had to do. With a swift motion, I tore the papers into pieces, the sound of ripping paper filling the room.

Marco's face turned red with rage. "You foolish girl," he spat. "You'll regret that."

I stood tall, my heart pounding with excitement. I had taken a stand against Marco, and I knew I had made the right decision. I was not going to let him bully me or take control of my life. I was Avery, and I was in charge.

I grasped Marco's arm, my fingers digging into his skin as I dragged him out of my room. I was furious, my anger boiling over like a pot about to burst. How dare he try to manipulate me, to take control of my life?

As we reached the hallway, I pushed him away from me, my hands on his chest. "Never come into my room again," I warned him, my voice low and even.

Marco's eyes flashed with anger, but I stood my ground. I was not afraid of him. I was Avery, and I would not be intimidated.

"Or what?" Marco sneered, his lip curling up.

I smiled, a cold, calculated smile. "Or I'll make sure everyone knows what kind of man you really are," I said, my voice dripping with malice.

Marco's face paled, and for a moment, I thought I saw a flicker of fear in his eyes. But then, his expression hardened, and he turned to leave.

"This isn't over, Lilith," he said, his voice dripping with malice.

I watched him go, my heart still racing with anger. I knew I had made an enemy, but I didn't care. I had stood up for myself, and I would do it again if necessary. I was Avery, and I was in control.

I walked over to my desk, my legs feeling heavy with exhaustion. I had been through so much today, and I just wanted to relax. I picked up the pen and signed the papers I was supposed to sign in the office my hand shaking slightly as I did so.

As soon as I finished signing, I felt a wave of relief wash over me.

I pushed the thoughts aside and stood up, my body aching with fatigue. I needed a bath, something to calm my nerves and soothe my muscles.

I walked into the bathroom, the warm water and soft music enveloping me like a cocoon. I sank deeper into the water, feeling my tension melt away.

As I lay there, I couldn't help but think about what had just happened. I had stood up to Marco, and I had won. But at what cost?

I closed my eyes, letting the water support me. I was tired, so tired. But I knew I couldn't give up. I had to keep fighting, for myself and for what I believed in.

As I drifted off to sleep, I knew that tomorrow would bring new challenges. But I was ready. I was Avery, and I was in control.

I walked downstairs to the kitchen, feeling a sense of relief that the previous day's drama was behind me. As I entered the kitchen, I saw my father-in-law, already seated at the table. He looked up at me and smiled.

"Good morning, Lilith! Come join us."

I poured myself a cup of coffee and took a seat next to him. "Good morning, father. How are you today?"

"I'm doing well, thank you for asking. And I have some wonderful news to share with you."

My curiosity was piqued. "What is it?"

"Xavier will be discharged from the hospital today!" He exclaimed.

My heart leapt with joy. "Oh, that's amazing news!" I couldn't believe it. Xavier was finally coming home!

I felt a wave of happiness wash over me. This was the best news I had heard in weeks. I couldn't wait to see Xavier and have him back home where he belonged.

"Thank you for telling me, father," I said, beaming with joy. "I'm so happy to hear this."

He smiled back at me. "I knew you would be, dear. We're all thrilled to have Xavier coming home."

I took a sip of my coffee, feeling a sense of gratitude and relief. Things were finally starting to look up. Xavier was coming home, and I had stood up for myself against Marco. I felt a sense of hope that everything was going to be okay.
