Chapter 422 She Is His Redemption
Why did she feel like the atmosphere between Adelaide and Matthew was kind of weird?
The way Matthew looked at Adelaide was also off, like he was hiding deep and complicated emotions that were hard to read.
Adelaide kept avoiding Matthew's gaze, not daring to make eye contact with him.
Something's up!
There was definitely something going on between Adelaide and Matthew.
She asked tentatively, "Do you two know each other?"
Adelaide and Matthew answered in unison: "No!"
Their tone was urgent and flustered, as if they couldn't wait to distance themselves from each other.
Now Sophia was even more certain that something she didn't know about had definitely happened between them.
But she could tell this wasn't the right time to ask about it, so she just made up an excuse to leave.
"You guys talk, I need to use the restroom."
With that, Sophia immediately turned and left.
After Sophia left, Adelaide and Matthew were still standing there, the atmosphere becoming a bit awkward.
Adelaide felt a bit lost. Many people thought she was bold and spoiled, and she thought so too.
But for some reason, in front of Matthew, her confidence suddenly dropped a notch.
Just as she was thinking about whether to make an excuse to leave, Matthew suddenly asked, "Have you been doing well all these years?"
"Pretty good, what about you?" Adelaide stammered in response.
Actually, she had been following Matthew's news even before returning to Novaria.
She knew he had founded the Lumina Group, that his business was growing bigger and bigger, and that he was Sophia's senior.
But she didn't have the courage to find him, after all, she was the one who broke up with him back then.
And more than ten years had passed. They were still in middle school then, at the most innocent stage of understanding feelings.
Back then they swore they'd be together forever, thinking each other was the one, but looking back now they'd probably just say they were young and naive.
Matthew lowered his eyes, staring straight at her, not speaking for a long time.
Just when Adelaide thought he wouldn't answer, he finally spoke: "Not good."
Not good at all.
Adelaide was the only woman he'd ever liked in his life. She was bold, bright, the most dazzling presence in any crowd.
The first time he saw her was at the middle school welcome party. She wore a delicate, beautiful dress and performed a dance.
The spotlight shone on her, moving with her dance steps, breathtakingly beautiful.
That period was actually the darkest time of his life. After being adopted by Robert, he had never given up searching for his parents.
That summer, he found news about his biological parents for the first time, but they had already divorced.
After he got lost, his father had an affair with another woman, just to have another son.
In the end, his father's mistress successfully gave birth to a son, and he decisively divorced his mother, married the mistress, and doted on her.
His mother was a very traditional and weak woman. After marriage, she was constantly suppressed by her husband's mother and looked down upon by her husband.
When his father divorced her, he even made her leave with nothing. The reason was that after all these years of marriage, his mother hadn't contributed anything to the family.
His mother finally had a son but he got lost.
When his mother was kicked out of the house alone, she had nothing but the clothes on her back.
She wandered the streets for a long time, fainted from hunger, and was taken home by a kind man.
That man's wife had died years ago. He was moved by her kindness and virtue and wanted to marry her.
She thought good days had finally come, but was diagnosed with terminal stomach cancer.
When he found his mother, she was lying in a hospital bed barely alive, down to her last breath.
That man treated his mother pretty well. Even when she got sick, he didn't abandon her. He took out all the family savings, borrowed a large sum of money, and took care of her by her bedside every day.
He only had time to see his mother one last time. He didn't even have time to contact Robert to save her before she closed her eyes forever.
She said, "Matthew, I'm so happy to see you again before I go. Knowing you're doing well puts my mind at ease. Heaven has been good to me."
After saying that, his mother's breathing became weaker and weaker.
He held his mother's hand tightly, feeling her body temperature gradually cool down, and his heart grew cold too.
From then on, he became even more silent.
When Adelaide smiled, it was like the sun shining into his world, bringing warmth and light, dispelling the gloom in his heart.
He thought he would be with Adelaide forever, go to high school together, college together, get married after graduation, from school uniforms to wedding dress.
Everything was so beautiful.
But this beauty was short-lived. In ninth grade, she suddenly broke up with him.
He asked her why, but she wouldn't answer.
When he tried to contact her again, her phone was off, and she had blocked his social media accounts.
To this day, he still hasn't figured out what went wrong that made her abandon him so heartlessly.
Adelaide didn't expect him to say that. Her heart jumped, and for a moment she didn't know what to say.
Matthew took out a business card from his suit pocket and held it out to her. "This is my contact information. Remember to call me."
"I..."
Adelaide instinctively wanted to refuse, but before she could finish speaking, the card was pressed into her hand.
"Keep it. You owe me an explanation. If you haven't figured out what to say, I'll wait for you." Matthew handed her the card and immediately pulled his hand back.
Afraid he couldn't control himself and would pull her into his arms, startling her.
Adelaide looked at the business card in her hand. She couldn't throw it away, but couldn't not throw it away either. The place he had touched felt slightly hot.
Just as she was at a loss, Cillian, who had just finished work and rushed over, patted Matthew on the shoulder from behind.
"Matthew? Adelaide, what are you two doing standing here?"
Adelaide snapped back to reality and hurriedly hid the card in her palm, putting her hand behind her back. "Nothing, why are you so late?"
Cillian scratched his head and explained, "Don't even get me started. I've never seen a celebrity who acts more like a diva than me! The female lead of our drama showed up two hours after filming started, taking her sweet time..."
He was never sensitive to emotions. He didn't notice anything off between Matthew and Adelaide and just started venting on his own.
It's just too much!
Everyone outside was saying he was acting like a diva because of the White family and StarVibe Entertainment's support, making up rumors to trash him at every turn.
He knew his temper was bad, and sometimes when it flared up, he could be pretty unfriendly.
But today he finally saw what it really meant to act like a diva.
Compared to that woman, what he'd done before was nothing.
So annoying!
If it weren't for her, he wouldn't have missed his flight!
By comparison, Elodie's image suddenly grew much taller in his mind.
He decided he would never say anything bad about Elodie again!
Thinking of Elodie, Cillian looked around and didn't see her anywhere. "Adelaide, where's Elodie? Why isn't she here yet?"
