Chapter 349 Jenny Has ulterior motives Toward You
James shook his head, sat down next to Laura, and asked, “Did you stay up late writing again? You don’t have to push yourself so hard. Are you trying to tell me I can’t afford to support you—or that your parents can’t?”
Laura let out a soft sigh and tried to look a little more awake. “It’s nothing. I got inspired last night and couldn’t stop writing. By the time I looked at the clock, it was already 3 a.m. I was too wired to sleep after that… and then I started thinking about Will.”
James tilted his head. “I never really knew how to bring him up. But if there’s anything you want to know, just ask.”
Laura mirrored his pose, cocking her head and asking lightly, “You mentioned that you and the other three were basically kings of the campus, always getting love letters. So—who got the most?”
James chuckled at the question, caught off guard by the shift in topic. But he quickly pulled himself together and said, “Honestly? It was about the same. But if you’re forcing me to rank us… I actually got the fewest.”
“No way!” Laura looked at him, eyebrows raised in disbelief. “Weren’t you the leader of the Four Heavenly Kings or whatever? How’d you end up getting the least?”
James leaned back and smugly crossed his legs like he was on a talk show. “You don’t get it. At first, I did get the most—dozens every week. It got so annoying, I handed them all to Jenny to deal with. But even that didn’t stop them, so eventually, I told everyone she was my girlfriend. After that, the flood stopped. Most of the girls gave up.”
“Why didn’t David and the others copy you? Did they like getting love letters that much?”
James laughed. “Please. You’ve gotten your fair share of love letters, haven’t you? You know how annoying it is getting notes from people you’re not into. David and the others just weren’t as lucky—they didn’t have a Jenny to play the fake-girlfriend card.”
Laura rolled her eyes. “Out of the three of them, who got the second-least? Was it… Will?”
James blinked. “How’d you guess?”
She shrugged. “He gave off a cold vibe. Not the kind of guy most girls would be into, right?”
“Is that so?” James raised an eyebrow. “But didn’t you used to say I was cold too?”
“You’re full of it,” Laura snorted. “I asked Jenny. She said you used to be the golden retriever type—bright and cheerful—and only got colder later on. Speaking of Jenny… you gave all your love letters to her? No exceptions?”
James nodded without hesitation. “Yeah. Back then, I wasn’t interested in anyone. I didn’t even read them. Jenny took care of it.”
Laura suddenly felt a twinge of sympathy. “Those poor girls. Knowing it wouldn’t work and still writing… why didn’t they try something else?”
James grinned. “Do you think they didn’t? Once they realized love letters weren’t getting them anywhere, they switched tactics—emails, text messages, even blocking my way and shouting confessions at me in public. They tried everything!”
Laura stared at him. “You’re kidding.”
“Ask Jenny if you don’t believe me. Every word is true.” But just as he was laughing, he caught the subtle shift in Laura’s expression. “What? What are you thinking?”
She gave him a sidelong glance and said with a huff, “Did Jenny also help you deal with those emails and messages?”
James smiled, picking up on her tone. “Of course not. Jenny’s just a classmate—she wasn’t that involved. She helped me with handwritten stuff, that’s all. The digital confessions? I handled those myself.”
Laura pressed on casually. “Did any of those emails or messages seem… off to you?”
James narrowed his eyes, sensing something beneath her tone. “Laura, what are you getting at? Trying to track down all my college admirers?”
She sighed dramatically, putting on a show of mock jealousy. “I just think Jenny might’ve had feelings for you—real ones. Maybe, in her heart, she already thought of you as her boyfriend.”
James considered this, then shook his head. “You’re overthinking it. Jenny was just a classmate and my subordinate later on. She never said anything like that.”
