Chapter 187

Chapter 187

The drawer wasn't closed properly, and there was a bottle inside that looked like a medicine bottle.

Layla reached out and took the bottle out.

She glanced at the name and purpose on the medicine bottle; it was for treating stomach problems.

Betty remembered what Mira had told her last time.

His stomach was bothering him?

But didn't he refuse to take medicine?

Opening the cap, she saw it had already been opened.

Seth came out and saw her holding his medicine bottle. His eyes darkened suddenly, but seconds later his expression remained unchanged as he stepped forward, took it from her hand, and tossed it back in the drawer.

Only then did Layla look up at him. "You're taking stomach medicine?"

Seth glanced at her and nodded in acknowledgment. "Yes."

After a moment's pause, Layla said, "If you're not feeling well, you should go to the hospital."

Hearing this, Seth sat on the edge of the bed, held her hand, and gently rubbed it, his tone noticeably gentler. "You care about me?"

Layla didn't avoid the question. Instead, she said frankly, "You're Elijah's dad."

So from Elijah's perspective, she hoped he would stay healthy.

She had to admit that with him around, Elijah's growing environment and experience would be more complete.

He would be Elijah's strongest support.

After saying this, she lifted the blanket to get out of bed but was gently held from behind.

"You don't want to forgive me?" He asked.

Layla looked down at his arm wrapped around her waist and said flatly. "What are you referring to?"

Seth paused for a moment before laughing self-mockingly. "Looks like you have more than one issue with me."

"I couldn't do what I promised you before. I regret it."

Hearing this, Layla pulled his arm away and got out of bed without responding to his words.

"Layla, I'm very sorry about your grandfather."

Layla paused slightly when she heard this, then turned to look at him. "You probably never knew..."

Seth looked at her with deep eyes. "What didn't I know?"

Layla pulled at the corner of her lips. "My grandfather really liked you and trusted you."

Otherwise, he wouldn't have chosen to believe him again after being upset by Abigail the first time.

Seth's expression darkened slightly, his voice low. "I let your grandfather's trust down."

"Yes, you let his trust down. If you hadn't chosen so-called responsibility back then..."

Seth's eyes grew unfathomably dark. He stood up, walked in front of her, and looked down at her indifferent face. "What can I do to reduce the barrier in your heart?"

Layla looked at him quietly and shook her head.

There was no way. William's death had long become a nail firmly driven into her heart, grown together with her flesh, impossible to pull out.

"The dead can't come back to life." Layla summed everything up with this one sentence.

Seth's expression grew darker as he just looked down at her.

Layla glanced up at him once, then turned and left.

This time, Seth didn't try to keep her, just quietly watched her leave the room.

Their bodies could be so intimately entwined, yet their two hearts seemed unable to draw close again.

Returning home, Layla watched Elijah sleeping for a while before getting up and going into the bathroom. After her bath, she picked up her phone and sent Betty a text message.

But Betty didn't reply.

She looked at the time; it was already past ten.

Was Betty still working overtime?

But before, no matter how busy Betty was, she would always reply to her messages promptly.

Yet Layla waited about half an hour without getting a reply from Betty.

She was still worried and called Betty's secretary. "Hello, Vida, this is Layla."

"I know, Ms. Montgomery. What can I do for you?"

"Is Betty at the office?"

"Ms. Wright isn't at the office. She left work early today with Mr. Evans."

Hearing Vida's answer, Layla frowned. "You're saying they left together?"

"Yes."

"Okay, sorry to bother you. Bye."

"Okay, Ms. Montgomery, goodbye."

After hanging up, Layla looked at the unanswered message and directly called Betty's phone.

But the first call went unanswered.

Layla gripped the phone that no one was answering and slowly sat up straight.

She had to call a second time.

But the second call rang for a long time and still wasn't answered.

She looked at her unanswered phone and bit her lip, considering whether to go check on her in person.

Finally, Betty's voice came through the phone. "Hello, Layla?"

The moment she heard her voice, Layla's worried heart instantly settled back down, and she unconsciously breathed a sigh of relief. "Betty, why did it take you so long to answer?"

"What's wrong?"

"Nothing, I just wanted to..."

Before Layla could finish, she heard suggestive sounds from the other end of the phone.

Hearing those intimate sounds, her words stopped immediately.

Betty and Layla were quiet for about five seconds before Betty spoke, her tone somewhat urgent. "Layla, I will call you back later..."

Just as Betty finished speaking, the call suddenly disconnected.

Layla looked at the disconnected phone with a somewhat strange expression. She was a mother herself; what couldn't she figure out?

Layla tossed the phone aside and pressed her temples. Her emotions were unsettled, though she couldn't quite name the feeling.

In any case, she felt uncomfortable.

Before, although she knew Betty and Adrian's relationship wasn't pure.

But that was when she didn't know anything.

But now knowing that Adrian might really have a grudge against them...

If she already felt this bad, like a bone stuck in her throat.

Wouldn't Betty feel even worse, like sitting on pins and needles, suffering in silence?

"Mommy."

Layla turned to look at Elijah beside her. She put down her phone and lay back down, gently patting the sleeping Elijah.

"Sleep, I'm always here."

At that moment, Betty looked at the phone Adrian had thrown on the floor, then turned her head to look up at Adrian above her.

Adrian stared at her with dark eyes. "Honey, you answer the phone at a time like this?"

Betty looked away and said flatly, "If I don't answer, she'll worry. She'll probably drive straight over to find me. Do you want her to come?"

Adrian gave a light snort and grabbed her chin, forcing her to look at him. "What's she worried about? That I'll abuse you?"

As he spoke, his gaze moved downward. The marks he'd left on Betty's body were still there, some turning green and purple.

Adrian looked at the marks on her body, met her cold, mocking gaze, and pulled at the corner of his lips. "I don't have a habit of abusing women."

Betty said nothing. If what Adrian did last time didn't count as abuse, then what would?

As if guessing her thoughts, Adrian applied slightly more pressure with his hand. "Don't believe me?"

Betty's red lips pressed together lightly. Of course, she didn't believe him. Was what happened last time something a normal person would do?

Adrian secretly gritted his teeth, but would he explain?

Absolutely not!

Although he was promiscuous and played around, he had always looked down on things like having sex with two women at the same time.

No matter how much he played around, he never had a habit of group activities.

He just changed women frequently, rather than enjoying group play.

The only reason Adrian did that last time was that she had made him so angry.

He thought she had come to make peace, to admit her mistakes, and apologize.

And the result?
