I have seen a gun up close before. I remember I was only about nine or ten. Kathy's mother was missing. The police officers had come into our house. They sat and took notes, one of them casually removed his gun from his holster and he set it on the table.
My Mum and Dad didn't stop him, they were more concerned about finding Kathy's mother.
It was the first time my ten year old self had seen a gun in real life. I remember imagining how it felt to hold it. I was smart enough to know that guns could hurt people. So I didn't understand why the police officer casually dropped the gun on our chipped table.
I wanted to tug on my mother's skirt or hide beside her, but she was holding Kathy in her arms. Little baby Kathleen who was a squirming bundle in her arms. And my brother was tugging at her skirts, begging her to carry him too. She was listening to the police officer seriously, her raven black hair scraped into a bun at the nape of her neck. She loved to keep her hair in a bun, she had always been such a simple woman with an extraordinary beauty.
I slowly moved back, knowing there wasn't much my mother could do if the policeman decided to shoot his gun at us. I had seen movies with cops and thieves and I knew what happened. I will never forget how scared I was looking at that gun.
I must have told Nick at some point in my life, how much I hated guns. How much they make me scared but right now he is pointing one at me.
He is holding a gun to me, like we didn't navigate all of high school together.
"Nick! You have to stop. You have to put that gun down now!"
My phone starts vibrating in my pocket as Nick ignores me. He is still speeding on the highway and honestly I have no way to get out of this moving car with locked doors. At least no way that won't put my life and my children's life in danger.
I remember that I have Guzman on speed dial, If I can call him and leave the call on for long, he can trace my phone. He should be able to.
I fondle with the pockets of my dungarees while trying to talk Nick out of whatever he is doing when he slowly drives into an abandoned parking lot.
If Nick wants to stop the car, this might be my chance to get out and look for help, I think as I stay calm and pester him with more questions.
"Where are you going Nick? Where are you taking me to? Are you working with Carter? Ugh? Tell me!" I snap.
"Shut the fuck up lady!" A voice screams from behind and I feel the a gun next to my head.
My entire body freezes.
I didn't know someone was in the backseat all along. No, no, no.
I had no idea.
He must have seen me trying to use my phone because he roughly digs into my pocket from the back and yanks out my phone.
Nick on the other hand as stops the car as he parks into an abandoned parking lot which looks empty and I want to cry out at the lack of help in the parking lot.
The parking lot is dark and almost empty save for a few cars but so far, it doesn't look like there's a single soul in it.
He unlocks the car and leaves.
"If you say a word, I won't hesitate to blow your pretty head off. You're gonna die anyways bitch."
The guy whispers in my ear. He still has the gun firmly pressed to the side of my head and I am so nervous that I can't even spare a glance at the rearview mirror to see who he is.
He doesn't sound like someone I know. Or someone that should be associated with Nick.
My phone vibrates again, it must be Ross or Guzman. The guy behind me curses and he seems to be trying to switch my phone off. I can't imagine how both of them will be feeling right now.
Ross will definitely be feeling lost and confused while Guzman on the other hand will be feeling hell of guilty for not accompanying me. I should have listened to him.
They must have checked the CCTV footage. That is what Nick doesn't know, Ross has hidden cameras in front of his house and the street. I don't know if they'll be able to make out the car as Nick's but since I got in willingly and lied to Guzman I don't know what the hell they must be thinking.
Nick on the other hand is parking a large dark blue car with heavily tinted windows next to his car and it dawns on me that they're changing cars.
He comes to his car and opens the door for me, signalling for me to get out as he runs a hand through his unruly curls.
His gun is still in his hand and he avoids my eyes. Instead I try to focus on the car and take in as many details of it as I can.
"Now you're going to come down slowly. No funny business okay?" The guy shouts again and I nod my head.
I'm slowly led out of Nick's car and it's then I catch a glimpse of the other guy's face.
I don't know who he is, I don't know at all.
But I take a good look at him in case I need to sketch his face for the cops later.
He is short and scrawny with shaggy blond hair and a permanent sneer on his face. He is wearing a black baggy sweatshirt and oversized hoodie.
He's still holding the gun closely to my head.
"What the fuck are you looking at?" He shouts as he pushes my head with the hilt of the gun.
"Hey! Are you blind? Don't you see she's pregnant? Tone it down."
I can hear Nick defending me but I still don't look up and acknowledge him, I still keep on staring at the short guy's face, studying everything and anything about him.
He sneers at me and throws my phone on the floor proceeding to smash it with his boots while Nick leads me to the other car.
I watch the smashed phone in horror. Still looking at it as I'm led away.
In front of the other car, with the short guy holding a gun to my head, Nick ties both of my hands to my back and he puts tape on my mouth.
He avoids my eyes the entire time even though I'm trying to make him look at me.
"Go open up the trunk. I'll hold her down." The short guy says to Nick who shakes his head.
"She can't stay in the trunk, she's claustrophobic. She'll ride in the back"
Oh so he remembers I'm claustrophobic but doesn't remember that I hate guns?
Unbelievable.
"But the Boss said you should put her in the trunk! So she won't see where we're going!"
"Who's in charge here? Oh that's right, it's me.".
Nick retorts to the guy who is fuming already.
As they roughly lead me to the car, I am blindfolded by the short guy and he pushes me into the back of the car.
They both warn me to lie low as I lay uncomfortably at the side of my belly with half of my face and body facing the floor.
How the hell am I getting out of this mess?
It's a long car ride filled with bumps and jerks along the road as if the person driving is unsure of what he's doing. I'm pretty sure it's Nick driving.
Inside the darkness, I can only hope that Ross is fine. And that he's not going to do anything too drastic to get me back.
I try to keep a cool head and be strong as the babies kick in my stomach.
I have to be strong for them and there's not much I can do since I'm tied and gagged like a common criminal.
I know what this spells out for me, they're taking me out of the equation.
I don't know if they're going to hurt me or not, but I know they're doing this because of Ross. Because of the company, what I don't understand is why the hell Nick is involved in all this.
Why would Nick be involved in all this?
Ross is going to lose the island and the company if I don't go back home.
