Chapter Ninety-six

Xander’s POV

She closed the door with a click.

I slowly sat down at the edge of the bed and looked at the kid.

His chest rose and fell steadily with each breath. His hair was rumpled and his lips pale.

He was strong and courageous like his mother.

Why do I feel a pull towards him?

When he called me ‘Daddy,’ something inside me shifted.

He seemed to draw me in with those eyes… my eyes.

I looked at his features closely. His skin was pale like his mother's skin.

His mouth was well defined, like mine.

We had a lot of similarities, maybe it was a coincidence.

But those eyes told me otherwise, they were really rare eyes.

He doesn't even look anything like Daniel. What if he was my son?.

I shook my head vigorously to get rid of that silly thought. Why would Bella and Daniel try to keep me away from my son?

I chuckled, the hospital atmosphere must be getting to me.

I traced his eyebrows and ruffled his bed hair, my suspicions kept growing in my gut.

“What if?”

I had to confirm, just to be sure I wasn't crazy. I picked up a few strands of hair from his pillow and wrapped it in my handkerchief.

A simple laboratory result was all I needed to convince me.

The door suddenly opened and Bella walked in.

I continued to study his features.

“Is he going to be okay?” he asked.

“Yes,” she replied. “The nurse said he just needs rest.”

I wanted to ask when he'll be discharged but I just noddeɗ.

I couldn't hold on my curiosity again, so I decided to let her know.

“I’ve seen those eyes before,” I muttered under my breath.

She paled instantly.

“Xander..”

“Noah…”I. said quietly, “he has eyes like mine.”

My lungs refused to work.

I forced out a laugh. “Xander, that doesn't mean anything. People share features all the time—”

“Not that exact color,” he cut in. His voice sharpened. “That shade of grey isn’t common.”

Panic crawled up my spine.

“He’s also unusually calm,” Xander continued. “Observant. That’s not common in kids his age.”

“Lots of kids are observant,” I countered quickly.

He lifted a brow. “Are they?”

My throat tightened.

For a moment, he just studied me. The silence stretched long and thin. Too thin.

Then he stood up slowly.

He walked toward me.

I held my breath.

He stopped when he was right in front of me. Too close. Too tall. Too perceptive.

“Bella,” he said quietly, eyes piercing into mine, “is there something you want to tell me?”

She paled instantly.

“No,” she whispered.

I nodded slowly.

“Alright,” I said. “Call me if anything changes, I’ll send a driver to pick you up in the morning.”

She was subtly giving every indication that she wants me to leave, so I decided to make it easier for her.

“Fine, I'll leave.”

I stood up from the bed and looked at Noah once more. I felt the pull of kinship with him.

Bella and Daniel were lying to me.

He was definitely my blood, I just need to prove it.

I turned and reached for the door. Instead of going towards the entrance, I took a turn to the lab.

I gave them my hair sample and Noah's hair sample and waited for the result.

I stood in the hallway, running a hand through my hair.

What if he was my son? Why did Bella lie to me about it? Why?

“Mr Knight?” one of the nurses called out to me.

My heart thundered rapidly in my chest.
“Yes?”

I stood up from the chair I've been sitting on for the past one hour in the waiting room.

“This just came in, the DNA test result is ready, sir.”

I buttoned my suit and walked towards the nurse, she handed me a white envelope.

I swallowed hard and collected the envelope. Why was I nervous all of a sudden?.
My fingers hovered over it for half a second.
I didn’t take it.

Not yet.
I stared hard at the white envelope, my throat suddenly felt dry.

“Thank you,” I said and I slipped the envelope into my inner coat pocket without opening it.

I decided that I was going to open it at home.

I walked out of the hospital and headed straight home.

I could feel the envelope burning a hole against my chest.

Is he my son? Was it possible? Was I losing my mind?

I clenched my jaw and forced myself to look out the window instead. But my mind refused to slow down.

By the time I reached my mansion, my palms were already sweating. I walked straight to my study and shut the door behind me.

I sat behind my desk and stared at the envelope.

My throat tightened.

“Just open it,” I whispered to myself.

It sat on the desk looking intimidating but small, like a time bomb.

The contents could change the dynamics of my relationship with Bella. She would be the mother of my son.

What if the letter confirmed he was my son? Do I even want to be a father?

It was a child with Bella and I want to be a part of the family. I want to be involved in my son's life, nothing or nobody can take that away from me.

My hands trembled as I tore the envelope.

I pulled out the slip and ran my eyes through the content of the envelope until they landed on the final line.

Probability of paternity: 99.8%

I froze.

The air punched out of my lungs.

I read it again.

And again.

And again.

No matter how many times I blinked, the words stayed the same.

Noah was my son… he was Noah Knight.
My knees fell to the floor and the paper fell from my hand.

Bella lied to me.

She looked me in the eye… and lied.
