Chapter Ninety-four

Bella's POV

I tried to regulate my heartbeats with the breathing exercise Xander told me to.

The car was almost closing in on the hospital as I tried not to think about what could go wrong during the surgery.

Immediately the car pulled over, Xander opened the door and I dashed out of the car.

“Careful.” Xander called out behind me, but I paid him no heed.

I rushed up to a nurse that I was familiar with and asked about Noah.

The nurse pointed down the hall. “ICU. But he’s stable. Just… he might need surgery if his vitals don’t hold.”

“Thank you.” Tears blurred my vision as I made my way to the emergency ward.

I pushed through the ICU doors, ignoring the way a nurse tried to stop me.
“Ma’am, you can’t…”

“I’m his mother,” I yelled at her.

Xander appeared behind me. The nurse looked between us, then stepped aside.

My legs felt numb as I stepped in. Noah looked so small on the hospital bed.

His tiny chest rose slowly beneath the oxygen tubes. There was a faint beep coming out of the monitor.

My heart shattered.

“Oh God…” I whispered and rushed to his bedside. I cupped his little hand in both of mine, my tears falling before I could stop them.

“Sweetheart,” I whispered, brushing his hair back. “Mommy’s here. I’m right here.”

My hands trembled so badly I had to grip the rail of the bed.

Xander stood behind me in silence.

A doctor walked in, scanning the chart.
“He’s stable… for now,” he said. “But his blood pressure dropped earlier. We’re monitoring him for the next hour. If it drops again, we’ll have to proceed with surgery.”

I swallowed a sob and nodded. “Okay… okay.”

I bent over Noah again and pressed a kiss to his forehead.

A soft hand landed on my shoulder.
Xander.

“Sit,” he said quietly. “You’re shaking.”

I didn’t realize I was until he guided me to a seat.

“Bella,” he whispered. “He’s strong. He’ll be okay.”

Tears streamed down my face uncontrollably. I covered my mouth with my hand to muffle the sound.
“I can’t lose him, Xander… I can’t.”

“You won’t,” he said firmly.

Suddenly, the machines started beeping. Doctors and nurses rushed into the room and tried to stabilize Noah.

The doctors put Noah on a wheelchair and wheeled him to the theater.

A doctor came to me.
“The best option for now is surgery, I'm really sorry, ma'am.”

I ran after the doctors to the operating room.

A nurse blocked the entrance, ”Ma'am you cannot go in when surgery is going on.”

“But he's my son, I need to see my son.”

I pushed through but she held me back and continued yelling, ”it's protocol ma'am.”

Xander caught up with me and held me down, I continued flailing my arms and pushing through.

He shook my shoulders and yelled,“Stop! Bella.”

The command finally seemed to penetrate into my consciousness, I buried my face into Xander's shoulder and sobbed.

My shoulders shook violently and he patted my back gently.

He kept murmuring, “Don't worry, he'll be fine. Everything will be okay.”

He glanced at the nurse and said, “How much longer will the surgery take?”

“Four more hours until he's cleared from surgery.”

“Okay, thank you. We're really sorry for the scene.”

I finally calmed down and sank to the floor, numb

Daniel suddenly showed up at the hallway, he ran towards me and hugged me.

“I came here as soon as you called, what happened?”

“She’s not in the right state of mind to answer you, can't you see that?” Xander snapped.

“Noah is in surgery.” My words lacked warmth just like I felt.

“Oh, I'm so sorry about that, Bella.”

“Your sympathy isn't going to bring Noah out of surgery. I thought you were a doctor, how come you haven't found a cure yet?”

Daniel answered through clenched teeth, “Noah’s type of disease is not my area of specialization.”

Xander chuckled dryly, “Excuses, excuses. You're so pathetic. What type of father are you?”

Daniel’s veins bulged with anger, he was about to retort when I held his hands.

I glanced at them both and yelled. “Enough you guys. How is this helping this situation?”

Xander buried his hands in his pocket and turned away.

Daniel sighed, “I'm sorry, that was very insensitive of me.”

We waited in silence. The clock ticked down the hallway and time seemed to move slowly.

I suddenly remembered the gala, did Xander get the deal?

“Did you manage to close the deal?” I asked him.

“I'll settle it.” He answered gruffly.

What does he mean by that?

The door opened and the doctor came out looking tired and sweaty.

Daniel and Xander walked towards him. I rushed at him, almost breathless. I asked, “How is he?How is my son?”

“He's out of the danger zone, hopefully he recovers perfectly.”

The stress lines gently melted away from my forehead, the tension drained from my body and I sighed.

“I just need his family medical history to continue his treatment.”

“That's not a problem sir, his father is here.” Xander replied.

I stared at Daniel and he stared at me, we both had the same thought running through our mind.

I cleared my throat and scratched my neck.

Daniel coughed and adjusted his collar.

Panic seized me, I could not let Xander find out.

I looked at his questioning eyes wondering why we were behaving so weirdly.

What am I going to do?

Daniel mummers to the doctor. “Can I have a word with you, doctor?”

Daniel took him to a corner and whispered some things to him, he nodded his head and left.

Daniel turned to me. “I've settled it, Bella.”

I released a sigh I didn't even know I was holding.

Xander stared at me and then returned his gaze back to Daniel, he regarded us suspiciously.

Daniel broke the ice, “Thank God he's okay but I gotta go Bella. Something came up.”
