Chapter 93 I NEED TO SAVE HER
“After you do that and revoke our separation and the clauses of that absurd contract where I can't access the publishing house or talk about, well, you know,” Heloise pondered over the phone. “Then I'll send you the location where I'm keeping her.”
“It's not enough. I want proof that you won’t hurt her!” I said it firmly, putting her on speaker, so the police could hear.
“Oh, my love, you hurt my feelings. You’ll need to have a little faith in me.” Laughing, she seemed to hit something, and I heard Lis moaning on the other end.
“That's not enough, Heloise!” I squeezed my free hands tightly, turning them white.
“Okay, I’ll send you real-time videos every hour showing her condition. I just can't guarantee that a few bruises won’t show up, you know, she has very fair skin.” Heloise was enjoying herself on the other end of the line. “By the way, what did you see in her? Elisabeth is so boring.”
“You better not touch her!” I threatened mercilessly. “Or I guarantee you, Heloise Forbs, I’ll break my promise to your brother and choke you to death!”
“Oh, dear, you know how much your threats excite me.” She laughed, hanging up.
“Damn you!” I threatened to throw the phone when the officer supported my hands, shaking his head.
“Mr. Morgan, we need all the evidence you have. Apparently, your building suffered a terrorist attack, and from what we heard between you and your ex-wife, it’s likely that she’s behind the attack.” The officer let go of my hand, placing his on my shoulder. “We will find your fiancée and bring her back safely.”
“Issue an alert against Heloise Forbs, search all her properties, and check any bookings or rentals in her name,” I said over the officer's shoulder to my security, who nodded. “Thank you for your time, officer, but you’ve done enough for now.”
“Mr. Morgan, we’re on your side, ready to help you. This is a police matter, and we heard you threaten your ex-wife’s life. We can’t allow your actions to escalate and harm her!” The uniformed man looked me straight in the eye. “You might have been in the military, but you’re not on a battlefield anymore. Please, let us do our job.”
“You’re right, thank you. When my men come back with information, I’ll order them to share it with you.” I nodded, shaking the officer's hand as the doctor approached us.
“Mr. Morgan?” The doctor said,“Your friend’s condition is critical. The bullet that grazed Mr. Greg's arm went through his chest. Fortunately, it didn’t hit his heart, but it caused a lot of damage.”
“Will he be okay?” I asked nervously, fearing to lose him.
“He lost a lot of blood during the surgery, but we managed to remove the projectile. We’ve just taken him to his room.” The doctor looked around, sighing. “Mr. Greg will be fine. If you’d like to visit him, our nurse will accompany you. However, he’s still asleep due to the general anesthesia.”
“Of course, thank you, doctor.” I nodded to him and turned to the officers. “We’ll speak soon, gentlemen. Excuse me.”
I followed the nurse down the long, cold hospital corridor. With each step, I thought of ways to track Heloise and places where she might be. I had decided: I would break my promise to Forbs and take the life of that sick psychopath. She had already taken my son, and now she wanted to take Elisabeth from my life?
“This way, sir.” Turning the corner, the nurse pointed to the recovery room.
I entered and saw Greg with an oxygen mask, bandaged at the surgery site and on his arm, with IV lines in his arms, and his body connected to machines monitoring his vital signs. I sat in the chair beside him, assessing his condition. He looked terrible. I held my brother’s hand, grateful for everything he had done for me.
I started going through the photos, zooming in, trying to find any clue that could lead me to Heloise. When I zoomed in on Elisabeth’s face, unconscious, injured, and with subtle tear stains on her skin, I murmured softly, “I will save you, Lis, I promise.” I saw my friend stir.
“Ah. I’m dying, and you’re making promises to your girlfriend,” Greg said weakly. I quickly stood up, my eyes welling up.
“Spare me, you know I hate drama!” he continued.
“Then you should try staying alive next time.” I squeezed his hand. “You idiot, you survived worse attacks and almost died because of Heloise!”
“Heloise? So it was her and not Pavel?” Greg stirred, groaning again.
“Stop moving, I’ll call the nurse to check on you.” I looked for the button to call the nurse. When I was about to press it, Greg grabbed my hand. “What is it?”
“I put a tracking chip in Elisabeth. In her monitoring room at home, there’s a phone and a computer with the software to track her.” He kept his eyes fixed on mine.
“When did you do this? Was Elisabeth aware?” I looked at him, surprised and grateful.
“Sorry, buddy, she was aware. I also trained her for being kidnapped,” he said weakly.
“You did what?” I raised my voice, stepping back a bit, and ran my hands through my hair, exhausted and slightly panting.
“When was the last time you took your medication?” Greg looked at me curiously.
“That doesn’t matter now. I need to find her, and you need to stay alive. Don’t you dare die, this role isn’t yours!” I smiled, moving closer. “I want to kill you, but thanks for the chip.”
“She’s stronger than you think, Patrick. Take your meds and find her. You need to be well to face Pavel and Heloise.” Greg raised his fist. “Let’s take them down!”
“Let’s go!” I raised my fist, giving Greg a light punch. “Rest up.”
“One more thing.” Greg smiled subtly. “I called our squad to help you in case this happened.”
“You had everything planned out, didn’t you?” I put my hands in my pockets, staring at him.
“Someone had to use their head to be prepared, my dear friend.” Greg laughed and groaned at the effort. “Ah, damn it. When you catch Heloise, make her suffer. Don’t let it be quick. She has to pay for all the pain she’s caused us!”
“I fear Heloise doesn’t want to get out of this alive, nor does she want Elisabeth and me to survive.” I sighed as my phone vibrated with the code we used in the army, indicating my squad was reporting in. “Those idiots really showed up.”
“We are your team, Major. We’re always at your service.” James entered, smiling and saluting.
“At ease.” I rolled my eyes, laughing. Next to him, Robert also walked in.
“Besides, we know Major Patrick pays better than the US Army!” Robert laughed, getting nudged by James.
“What kind of mess has our dear Major gotten into this time?” John also entered, assessing Greg. “Buddy, why do we always find you in bad shape?”
“You know how it is, I can’t stay away from trouble!” Greg smiled. “I’m counting on you guys!”
Everyone nodded, looking at me.
“Now that the whole gang’s here, let’s take down some enemies!” I clenched my fists, determined.
