Chapter 70 Reason for the visit
Sera's Pov

My legs just moved faster than I realized, and then his arms came up and I hit him hard enough that he had to take a step back to hold us both, and he did, and he wrapped both arms around me and held on with everything he had left.

"I've got you," he said. His voice was rougher than I remembered. Worn at the edges. "My brave little girl. I've got you."

I couldn't speak.

I pressed my face against his shoulder and held on and felt him breathe and let that be enough for now.

It took a long time before I could make myself let go. When I did, I stepped back and looked at his face, at the marks left on his wrists, and felt rage rise in my chest.

Then I looked at the woman standing behind him.

Tall, dark-haired. She had my mother's eyes arranged in a completely different face, and she was watching me.

"Sera," she finally let out. “I am Gia,”

"You got him out."

"I did."

“Thank you very much. I don't know how to thank you.”

"Sera." Her voice didn't shake but her hands did, just slightly, pressed flat against her sides like she was holding herself in place. "We didn't only come to bring your father home."

"We came because of Wren," she said. "The marks. The collapse. What's been happening to her body since last night." She held my gaze and didn't look away. "There is only one thing in this world that can stop what's coming for her."

My chest pulled tight as her eyes stayed on mine.

"We came," she said, "because Wren is dying. And you are the only one who can heal her.”
