Chapter 184 Lily's Poor Boyfriend Resembles Someone
Lily recalled a prior visit to The Velvet Vine. Last time Eric footed the bill, that's precisely where they'd dined.
Dennis rarely felt a twinge of guilt. He kept a straight face. "Yes, same place as before." After all, Eric had footed the bill.
Lily nodded, "I knew it sounded familiar."
Sophie stifled a laugh behind her hand. "Come on, drop the act. You hit a knockoff Velvet Vine, not the real deal I'm raving about." After all, with your status as a school doctor, you probably can't afford a single meal there."
Spotting Lily earlier with a man, Sophie couldn't resist poking her head in. Sure enough, there sat Lily with that down-on-his-luck school doctor.
Good thing Lily was still with this poor guy and had no chance to go after Ethan. That put her mind at ease.
Lily's face turned cold, "It's just a meal, is it worth showing off like this? Are you that hungry?"
"Why are you so angry, Lily? I just want your school doctor boyfriend to treat you better. Don't come to these small restaurants. "Pick a spot with some ambiance, at least." Sophie beamed, relishing her edge over Lily at last. Her boyfriend's wealth sealed it.
Lily's boyfriend was just a broke school doctor, destined for lifelong poverty!
"Sophie, with that dimwit brain of yours, can you even taste the difference?"
After Lily finished speaking, she grabbed Dennis's wrist, "Let's go."
No need to endure Sophie's nagging here. Dennis hung his head, compliant, and trailed obediently after Lily out of the restaurant.
Sophie was still unwilling to let it go and followed them out, "Lily, life after running away from home isn't easy, right? If you need money, you can tell me."
Lily turned around, "Better focus on sleeping your way up and pleasing that rich fool. His mother's no pushover, after all."
In this life, Sophie hadn't eclipsed her glory or climbed any career ladder. So how would Sophie wrangle Ethan's formidable mother-in-law this time?
Probably very hard.
Sophie immediately stamped her feet in anger. How did Lily know that Ethan's mother didn't like her?
She had previously bought gifts for Ethan's mother on her own initiative, But the next day, they sent them back with a curt, rude note, refusing gifts from unknown sources. Clearly, they despised her.
Sophie's face contorted in fury. She was hell-bent on marrying into the Murphy family, claiming her spot as a wealthy heiress, and eclipsing Lily for good.
Ethan drove up in his sports car and honked.
Sophie rushed up, flashing a pure, sweet smile. "You're here." "Who were you chatting with? Why didn't you come say hi?"
"I ran into Lily and her school doctor boyfriend. I thought they had broken up, but they're still together. She must really like him."
Landing in a glittering hub like Empire City, yet clinging to that broke school doctor boyfriend, how utterly foolish.
Ethan instinctively looked toward the alley. He was also curious about what Lily's boyfriend looked like.
To actually fancy a spitfire like Lily, his eyes must be shot! He spotted her instantly, along with the tall man at her side.
Ethan looked at that figure and suddenly felt it was somewhat familiar, but couldn't be sure for a moment.
That couldn't be! Sophie suddenly shielded Ethan's eyes, a jealous edge to her voice. "What are you staring at?" Was he eyeing Lily?
That wouldn't do.
Ethan tsked his tongue. "Cut it out." But when he glanced up again, Lily and the others had vanished. Must've been a trick of the eye.
Ethan cooed at Sophie then, "What would I look at? Who's prettier than my baby? Just curious about Lily's boyfriend, that's all."
"He's quite handsome, but very poor. He brought her to this kind of small restaurant for a date."
Sophie was in a good mood, "Now take me to The Velvet Vine quickly."I want tons of pics for my feed." But when Ethan pulled up to The Velvet Vine, they were turned away, no tables free.
Ethan frowned, baffled. "I booked it clear as day, used my cousin Eric's card."
"Mr. Murphy said no more using his card."
Ethan's face became a bit awkward. He called Eric, "Eric, why won't you let me use your card anymore?"
"I warned you to stay out of Lily's mess, did you listen? You even blabbed it around the lawyer crowd. Where'd you find the guts?"
Eric scolded Ethan and hung up directly.
Ethan's face soured sharply. Sophie approached, concern creasing her brow. "Ethan, what's up? Can't we head in for dinner?"
She had been looking forward to this for so long and had just shown off in front of Lily.
Ethan answered irritably, "It's all because of you. Ethan's expression darkened. "My cousin caught wind of me blabbing in the lawyer circle and warned me to butt out. If Mom finds out, I'm toast."
Sophie immediately answered carefully, "But it was Samantha who spread the word."
"My cousin's no fool, he must've caught wind of something." Sophie tilted her head, intrigued. "Why does it feel like he's got a soft spot for Lily?"
"I feel the same way. Could he and Lily be having an affair? The last time I got beaten up in Imperial City, it was my cousin who personally came to find me. Otherwise, I definitely would have pursued it!"
Sophie froze for a moment, recalling the man who came to the hospital to see Ethan.
She ventured cautiously, "That man at the hospital, was he your cousin?"
"Spot on. Why else would I drop the chase on Lily!"
Sophie's face turned pale with fright. "But that man had a very good relationship with that school doctor."
Who could've guessed a broke school doctor would be so tight with the Murphy family heir?
Ethan said doubtfully, "Probably just friends. I'll ask my cousin later. But for now, I can't stir trouble for Lily, or he'll have my head."
Sophie could only show a forced smile. She felt like crying, but couldn't even cry now.
If that man was Ethan's cousin, wouldn't she have made a bad impression on him very early on? Would he complain to Ethan's mother?
Sophie's heart raced with anxiety. This was all Lily's doing! She'd botched her chance to impress the Murphy family. What now?
Back in the dorm, Lily spotted Dennis's message: [Out of ointment?] She checked, and sure enough, she had run dry.
She replied: [Where did you buy it?]
She searched online but couldn't find this brand of ointment.
[Can't buy it outside.]
[How much? I'll Venmo you.]
Dennis eyed her message, eyes narrowing. [Money talk with me? Drawing battle lines already?]
Lily teased deliberately: [Not money, then what?]
His slender fingers flew across the keys: [Feelings.]
